The Federal Executive Council (FEC) headed by “Acting President” Goodluck Jonathan, ended its weekly meeting today with a "resolution" to send a six-man team composed mainly of ministers to look for Umaru Yar’Adua, Nigeria’s sickly leader who was evacuated to Saudi Arabia in a medical emergency on November 23 2009. Nobody in the government has set eyes on him since then The delegation will be led by Yar’Adua’s crony, Abba Sayyad Ruma, who is the Minister of Agriculture; Rilwan Lukman, Minister of Petroleum Resources;Professor Babatunde Osotimehin, Minister of Health; Adetokunbo Kayode, Attorney General and Minister of Justice; Ojo Madueke, the Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Ahmed Yayale, the Secretary to the Federal Government.

Sources at today's meeting told Saharareporters that it was stormy, as some ministers wanted the FEC to declare YAr’adua incapacitated outright. They were met head-on by Yar'Adua loyalists who forced the meeting to adopt the resolution that would enable the team visit Jeddah to ascertain Yar’Adua’s condition and revert to the full FEC.

An after-session briefing by Dora Akunyili, the Minister of Information who lit a fire under the cabinet two weeks ago by introducing a memo challenging its position on the ailing leader, did not offer much, but she described the FEC as being the “closest” [institution] to Yar’Adua, which should be able to visit him in person.

This seems to be an allusion to the several delegations, including those of the Senate, the House of Representatives, Governors, that have made futile visits to Saudi Arabia. It is unclear how the delegation will succeed in meeting Yar'Adua face to face, but the FEC also resolved to send a letter to the King of Saudi Arabia Kingdom.

Said a political analyst today, "The FEC is playing an extended game, like the Nigeria Football Federation trying to hire top foreign coaches without getting in touch with them directly. This so-called resolution does not offer a sense of urgency, or seriousness or of protocol. If it had a sense of urgency, the delegation would be leaving tonight. If it had a sense of seriousness, this move would have been made before now, and certainly no later than last week. If it had a sense of protocol, the letter to the King would have been sent before the FEC announced the card it intends to play. This has all the makings of ritual, but also of potential embarrassment."

The whereabout of yar'adua is the business of 150million Nigerians. So the ministers are doing the people's work

You plan to sustain the status quo will not work.

Tax payers money working wonders. How many teams have been sent to Saudi Arabia to look for Yar'adua? This country is sick. Even as at today we don't have a coach to take the Super Eagles to the world cup as we prefer to hire foreign coaches that could not take their own countries to the world cup or have been jobless for a while instead of using our own coaches.

Maybe one day we will look for foreigners to lead us in this country.

look, this is not about your status quo but about Nigerians with no inkling of what their duties are supposed to be.

Were these people hired to go and look for Yaradua or what does their job description say?

why is jonathan sending them to go and look for Yaradua? He has been made acting president- does he not know of anything else he can do besides sending top ministers on unnecessary foreign trips?

Nigeria and yeye politics.

If they find Yaradua, does that mean Nigeria will suddenly become paradise?

the rule of law is necessary

Jonathan caan only be acting on behalf of an existent President not a dead man. That is why the trip is necessary

the saudis dont give a rat's backside what your opinion is about Yaradua.

Only a Nigerian would still insist on going there to look for godot after being embarassed multiple times. Most other countries would have gotten the message by now.

Obasanjo himself was given the cold shoulder when he went there, so what exactly is hard to understand about what they're telling you?

@tpia

not sure you have a lot to say

But I have no reason to feel insecure to someone who thinks the Saudis can hold the President of Nigeria against the will of the Nigerian Government.

All those who previously went to Saudi to see Yar'adua failed because they went on personal basis (ie friends and associates of Yar'adua and will be classed as such if their visit was not routed through the Saudi Embassy).

Now that we have an official team from the Presidency with a formal letter to the Saudi King he has no choice but to grant access. Otherwise he will either tell us why he kidnapped our President or tell us whether Yar'adua has sought any form of assylum in Saudi and as such a Refugee.

So once again this is not about funky gramma and what you think the Saudis are saying. We just have not made an official request.

If this team is not granted access to Yar'adua, the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria will be summoned in Abuja to explain why.
