PoliticsTelecom Engineer, Accomplice In Military's Net Over Illegal Manufacturing Of Wea by 3Ebisco(op): 10:11pm On Apr 01, 2019
Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) in Benue state on Monday paraded a telecommunication engineer and one other person for allegedly manufacturing illegal weapons around the border community of Benue and Taraba states.

The Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Adeyemi Yekini, told newsmen while parading the suspects at the Operations headquarters in NAF Tactical Command, Makurdi that the troop received information about the weapon manufacturers five weeks ago.

Yekini said that after four weeks of intensive surveillance of the particular area in Aniyin in Logo local government area of Benue state, his men were able to identify the suspected culprits and then passed information to the troops of OPWS, Sector 2 led by Captain Samuel Okenarghe, who arrested two of the suspected arms dealers.

Okenarghe told journalists that he led troops to locate the two suspects including the engineer who was later arrested on March 24, 2018 in Anyin with AK 47 and subsequently recovered other manufacturing items and several arms in different stages of completion from their illegal weapons’ factory.

The Force Commander, Yekini, however added that the suspects were cooperating with OPWS as he emphasised that they already have a long list of their customers (suspects) who are spread across Benue and Taraba states.

Meanwhile, the suspects; Engr. Cephas Ati and Mzunga Tseyina in an interview explained their roles in the alleged weapons’ manufacturing.

Ati who spoke on behalf of his partner, narrated that he got involved in the illegal business two years ago after his return from Europe when his fortunes nosedived drastically occasioned by alleged witchcraft activities.

“I had difficulties starting life all over again from scratch. Since I had ideas of arms manufacturing, having learnt it for five years in Mauritania, I decided to get involved in the business to raise money that would enable me go back to Europe,” he said.

The suspect who claimed he is a qualified telecommunication engineer said he lives in Wukari in Taraba state (a border town of Anyin in Benue’s Logo LGA) but had on the day of his arrest visited his Anyin village on a dual mission; to deliver a simple rifle which a friend ordered for self defence and to check his farm under dispute by five of his brothers.

Ati added that on the way to deliver the weapon, he had called Tseyina to drive him to the location, stressing that, that was the only involvement of his partner just as he denied owning any arms workshop in the area.

He said the military apprehended him at his farm the following day while his five brother contended with him over the farm land and further alerted the troops that they were being threatened by their brother with an AK47.

The suspect confessed to have engaged the owner of the workshop, one Tarveshima Uvande in Ukum LGA severally in the past two years to manufacture different rifles for him which he sold a total of at least 16 within the period to his customers for between N300, 000 and N350,000 per each rifle while pistols sold for N50, 000.

PoliticsSee When, Where & Time Gbajabiamila Will Officially Declare Bid For House Of Rep by 3Ebisco(op): 11:01pm On Mar 31, 2019
The majority leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, will on Sunday formally declare his intention to run for the office of the speaker in the ninth assembly.

Concise News reports that according to Gbajabiamila’s office, the event would begin at 2 pm at the Lagos/Osun hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

The Lagos lawmaker, who represents Surulere II federal constituency, will be returning to the house for a fifth term.

Gbajabiamila’s office announced Abdulmumin Jibrin, a Kano lawmaker, as the director general of the campaign.

Jibrin is a former chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations before he fell out with the house leadership in 2016.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership is expected to announce the zoning for the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The APC leadership recently declared support for Yobe senator Ahmed Lawan to become the next Senate President.

The move was condemned by other APC lawmakers including Borno senator Ali Ndume who also seeks to be the Senate president.

The party is expected to produce the speaker, but as it happened in 2015, a different candidate other than that endorsed by the party leadership may contest the election.

While both Messrs Lawan and Gbajabiamila were endorsed by the party for the positions in 2015, Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara emerged as the Senate President and Speaker of the House respectively.

The two winners later defected from the APC to the PDP.

PoliticsRivers Election: APC Chieftain Makes Fresh Allegations Against Wike by 3Ebisco(op): 10:21pm On Mar 31, 2019
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has printed Certificate of Returns in favour of Nyesom Wike and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates ahead of the conclusion of elections in the state.

The chieftain also alleged that the Governor planned to unleash Neighbourhood Watch operatives on leaders of the APC in the state as well as use the same outfit to intimidates Rivers people and prevent them from exercising their constitutional rights to express themselves through peaceful protests.

He lamented that the “compromised” Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state, Obo Effanga, had continued to frustrate the election processes in the state.

Eze in a statement state that: “That Engr. Awara won the March 9 polls is not in doubt so any effort to act otherwise will be an exercise in futility and for Wike threatening to ban peaceful public demonstrations, knowing very well that Rivers people are determined to ensure that their votes for the incoming governor are not subverted, is a fallacy.

“Since the establishment of the Neighborhood Watch, the fake armed outfit of Governor Nyesom Wike, which was solely set up to prosecute his 2019 general polls agenda.

”Rivers state has not been the same as peace has eluded the people and nobody has since been able to sleep with the two eyes closed.

“It was with this outfit that Governor Wike stormed the Obio-Akpor collation centre to cart away electoral materials, kidnap electoral officials to the Rivers State Government House to alter and rewrite the results of the polls and plot to suspend the collation of results of the 9th March election, when it was clear that Governor Wike had lost the election.

The statement further read: “Two Nigerian Army officials, currently battling for their lives, were brutally shot at this event of Wike storming the collation centre and surprisingly most of the public affairs analysts discussing the Rivers state politics have not cared enough to mention these ugly incidents in their drive to paint the army and the Minister of Transportation in bad light.

“Nobody has cared to ask why the INEC REC suspended a peaceful collation of results that would have not brought Rivers state into the ugly limelight that it is currently.

”’he is just concerned with ensuring that Wike is sustained as the governor of Rivers state against the wishes of the people of the state,” he added.

While speaking on the ban of peaceful public protests by Wike, Eze said the state government had erred in law, trying to restrain an action that had since been made legal and permissible by law.

“Public Order Act, Police permits is inconsistent with Section 39&40 of the Constitution if the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Art 11 of Africa Charter on Human and People’s Right Act (cap A9) LFN 2004.

“The Public Order Act, which requires a permit for rallies is inconsistent with Fundamental Rights of Nigerians, freedom of assembly and expression’. The superior courts have said so in: ANPP vs. IGP(2008) 12 WRN 65, HADIZA BALA vs. COP & Anor (unreported).

“We, therefore, caution Wike and his agents to ensure that no harm goes near the way of the incoming Governor as he has proven that he is beyond the purchasing powers of the outgoing Rivers state government,” he added.

This was contained in a statement by the party’s executive caretaker publicity secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, that recent political attacks in the state call for concern.

TribuneOnline recalls that suspected political thugs disrupted the campaign rally of the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Rotimi Paseda, in Ijebu-Ode, on Friday.

Barely 24-hours after, another political violence was recorded when the supporters of the APC governorship candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, were waiting for his arrival for the ward to ward tour of Odogbolu Local Government Area, on Saturday.

PoliticsPolice Intercept 34,000 Live Cartridges Headed For Onitsha by 3Ebisco(op): 10:18am On Jan 13, 2019
The Ogun State Police Command had intercepted a mini truck conveying 34,865 live cartridges from the neighbouring Republic of Togo through a Nigerian boarder town in Ogun.

The consignment according to the Police was headed for Onitsha, in Anambra state.

The command also said that it had arrested three suspects including a Togolese, Isa Muhammad and two Nigerians, Alabi Fayemi and Seyi Bamgbose, in connection with the incident.

The state commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, presented the suspects to newsmen at Imeko Police Station, on Saturday.

He said the truck and the suspects were arrested on Friday by a Stop-and-search border patrol team at Olohunda, a border town between Abeokuta North and Imeko Afon local government areas of the State.

Iliyasu said the cartridges were neatly concealed inside the truck with registration number Lagos, KSF 254 XX and was being transported to Onitsha in Anambra State.

The Police Commissioner said the suspect offered financial inducement to the officers but rejected it, adding “the extant laws of the land will be invoked on them” (the suspects).

“Our operatives on border patrol led by ACP Shettima Muhammad while on routine patrol of the border area on Friday, based on intelligence report, intercepted a Toyota Dyna Mini truck with registration number KSF 254 XX with some cartons neatly concealed therein.

“The mode of the concealment aroused the suspicion of our men, who stopped the vehicle and properly searched it.

“Upon the search, 34, 865 live cartridges were discovered in cartons neatly concealed inside the vehicle,” he said.

Iliyasu explained that the police have commenced further investigations into the matter and would soon charge the suspects to court.

Muhammad, who is the prime suspect, told journalists that one of his Nigerian customers based in Onitsha gave him the vehicle to help him drive.

Isa said he had to approach another friend, Bamgbose, who had a valid driving licence to drive while he (Mohammed) served as a motor boy.

He explained that after getting to Nigeria, they were enroute Abeokuta, Ogun capital, for a repair work on the vehicle before they were arrested by the police.

Mohammed, who denied knowledge of the ammunition inside the truck, said he could have taken the truck to Onitsha thinking it was empty.

He, however, could not give the name of the person, who gave him the truck.

“I am 36 years old and a bus conductor.

“A friend called me that he has one small vehicle but I told him that I don’t have a driver’s license but I have some of my friends that can drive.

“We took the vehicle from Togo and when we got to Nigeria, Seyi said the spring was too small for charcoal business and we were taking it to Abeokuta to fix the spring.

“On our way, the Police stopped us and said they suspected the vehicle.

“I don’t know the owner of the motor but he usually come to Togo to buy vehicles and okirika (used cloths) and when he gave me the vehicle, he said I should bring it to Onitsha and call him when I get there.

“We were not aware that anything was concealed in the vehicle. We thought we were driving an empty vehicle.

I have called the owner immediately we were arrested and he spoke with the police,” he said. (NAN)

Politics2019: Olawepo-hashim Vows To Deliver Prosperous Modern Economy, As PT Flags Off by 3Ebisco(op): 10:47pm On Jan 12, 2019
Presidential Candidate of the People’s Trust (PT), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has assured Nigerians that the party, if voted into power in the forthcoming general elections, will deliver 24th century economy that will be secured, prosperous and modern.

He gave the assurance at the presidential campaign flag-off of the party on Saturday, held at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja.

According to him, “I am grateful to God for this occasion as it marks a turning point for Nigeria. We are at the point where we need to exchange instability for stability. We are aiming to stop violence and make this country a place where lives will count.

“Let me assure you that by the time we are elected, we will build a United Nigeria. Many states, as it is, are dominated by the agents of destruction. They have been overtaken by kidnappers, thugs, and other social vices. And it’s a pity that youth unemployment has risen to a point that we can no longer tolerate.”

Olawepo-Hashim added: “We want to build economy that will guarantee jobs and empower our women. We will achieve 4-trillion-dollar economy in ten years. We will empower the states to have their police so that internal security can be enhanced. We will build a Nigeria where every Nigerian will be proud of their passports because of foreign policy.”

While saying that the party is determined to put an end to poverty and squalor unleashed on Nigerians by the incumbent government, the presidential flag bearer said: “You cannot fight corruption efficiently with a low minimum wage. As a party ready to build a new nation, we will raise the minimum wage to 50,000.”

Continuing, he said: “We have no relationship with poverty with the amount of resources the country has. We are not making empty promises. You can trust us for democracy, security, jobs and a new Nigeria. For 27 years, I have been creating jobs.

“I will be a commander in chief for all Nigerians not some Nigerians. That is the Nigeria the PT will take back. We will create a knowledge-based economy. We will deliver a 24th century economy that will be secured, prosperous and modern.”

Dr Olisa Agbakoba, who spoke earlier in while addressing the mammoth crowd, said: “We took a resolute decision to form this Movement we are seeing today. We have reunited under a broad platform called Third Force and by God’s grace and power, we will win. Let us go together.”

Also speaking, the Director General of the party’s campaign organisation, Alhaji Aliu Abufari, in his speech, stressed: “Today, the tree of new nation is being planted. As we all know, our country has become a community of poor people but today marks a new beginning. We have been devastated by insecurity from the North East extended to every part of the country but we want a turn-around.”

He added that the menace of militancy, Internet fraud, kidnappers have become the order of the day in the country while the young people have become social nuisance to the communities.

Reacting to the notion that there are only three political parties in Nigeria, Abufari said that “it is true”.

According to him, “To them, there are only political parties, APC, PDP and others. That’s true but Third Force representing the others. That is the only party that will take care of all the ills. We have the person that will deliver the country. We are expecting 80 million votes of Nigerians. The victory is there for us to take.”

Chairmen of the states under the platform of the party who were in attendance to solidarise with the presidential candidate included those of Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, Ekiti, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Kogi, Imo, Plateaue, Taraba, Jigawa and Benue.

Barrister Anthony Akigha, who spoke on behalf of the state chairmen represented at the event, said: “We are ready to go and win the elections across the states. Our people are fully mobilised and will deliver. Nigerians are tired of the two bad coins leading this country and that is why we are craving for a new leadership.”

Also in attendance were the grand-daughter of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Mrs Funke Awolowo; Nollywood actress Racheal Oniga and few other members in the industry who came to give their unalloyed support to Olawepo-Hashim.

Oniga briefly quipped: “We are here to support one of our own. We are supporting him and will deliver him. In May, we are going to celebrate in Aso Rock.”

Ten presidential candidates have also dropped their ambition to support Olawepo-Hashim.

PoliticsBuhari May Pick New IGP From South-east •the Two Leading Contenders by 3Ebisco(op): 2:33pm On Jan 12, 2019
As the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Kpotun Idris expires next week, on reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, President Muhammadu Buhari may soon appoint a new IGP, following his promise to act on the matter.

Buhari had said in an interview with Arise TV that though the choice of a new service chief evokes unnecessary competition, he would act on the matter of Idris’ imminent retirement.

Idris’ tenure expires on January 15, 2019, when he turns 60.

President Buhari is still putting close to his chest the final decision on whether he would extend Idris’ tenure or appoint a new IGP.

If the President has to choose a new IGP, sources said he may look in the direction of the South-east. The outgoing IGP Idris is from Lavun, Kutigi in Niger State.

In the South-east zone, there are two known top officers, one a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, a woman, and the other an Assistant Inspector General of Police.

Both of them were course mates and promoted into the AIG rank at the same time.

DIG Peace Ibemere Abdallah, who is at present the DIG Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation (CIID), Abuja, is said to be a highly effective, versatile and professional police officer.

One top officer said she is no less qualified than any other but given the increasing crime wave and sophistication of criminals, believed to be mostly men, the question some have asked is whether the country was ripe at present for a female IGP.

The other top officer from the South-east is Assistant Inspector-General Godwin Nwobodo, who is currently in charge of the Nigeria Police Border Patrol Force.

He is said to be another thoroughbred professional police officer, highly cosmopolitan and detribalised.

Though an Igbo man, Nwobodo was bred in Yorubaland where he had his elementary, secondary and university education in the South-west and also performed his mandatory National Youth Service scheme in the zone.

AIG Nwobodo was born on 12 August 1959 to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel and Margret Nwobodo of Aninri Local Government Area, Enugu State. He completed his primary school education at Alafia Institute (Free Section) Mokola Ibadan, Oyo State in 1973 and obtained his WASC and HSC at Olivet Baptist High School, Olivet Heights Oyo in 1978 and 1980 respectively. He obtained a B.Sc (Honours) degree in Biochemistry in 1983 from the University of Ibadan.

He served in the NYSC scheme in 1984 in Ondo State. He enlisted in the Nigerian Police Force effective December 31, 1984. Since enlisting in the police force, Nwobodo has acquired more knowledge and degrees. He now holds an LL.B, BL (Law), M. Sc in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology, as well as MSS (Masters Strategic Studies) both from the University of Ibadan, effectively equipping him as a complete intelligence and robust crime-bursting and combating officer, versed in law and criminology.

Nwobodo has held very sensitive positions and performed critical assignments. He was the Commissioner of Police (Courses) at the Nigeria Police Academy, Kano, before his recent promotion to the rank of AIG.

PoliticsDogara Accuses Northern Leaders Of Bias In Tackling Insecurity by 3Ebisco(op): 6:30pm On Jan 11, 2019
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has challenged the elders in northern Nigeria to raise their voices against insecurity as they did during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He made the call while addressing supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at a rally on Thursday in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

Dogara said, “On the issue of insecurity, all of us know what is happening in Borno and, unfortunately too, between Abuja and Kaduna, as well as in Zamfara, Katsina, Nassarawa, Benue, Plateau, and even Sokoto states.”

“Now, I cannot even mention all because it is a general problem in the county, but I was highlighting the states where the problem is more endemic as of now. The issue is this when this thing was going on under Jonathan, we had Borno elders always speaking. Where are the Borno elders now?” he questioned.

He added, “Where are the leaders of Northern Nigeria now that this problem has become endemic? What are they saying now? Are we not guilty of what we allow?

“The truth is that if we don’t rise up to the endemic challenges now, sooner than later if things continue this way, we are not going to have a country. So it is our responsibility to rescue Nigeria from the clutches of insecurity. Without security; we would not have a meaningful democracy.”

The Speaker said the alleged silence of the leaders on insecurity in the region could be taken as enabling the poor management of security in the country.

He condemned the purported elevation of some public office holders, saying those praising them were bringing destruction upon the country.

“Just like my last speech to Nigerians that were gathered in a rally like this in Gombe, I said that the 2019 general elections are not about President Muhammadu Buhari, it’s not about Atiku Abubakar; but I said it is about you who are gathered here and it will be a referendum on insecurity and hunger in this land,” Dogara recalled.

“The sad reality in Nigeria is that by our silence we have condoned those who have been unable to effectively tackle the insecurity in the nation. We have wittingly become enablers of evil.”

The lawmaker stated further, “You know what enablers do? Enablers don’t build a country, only courageous people do. What enablers do is that they instigate the worship of individuals and the office they occupy; they will confuse such an individual with accolades.

“You know none of us was built to receive worship, anyone who attempts to receive worship will meet destruction in his wake. So that is why we are witnessing destruction in Nigeria because we have elevated some human beings to the status of God.”

Politics2019 Election: APC Assembled Drug Barons, Forgers, Looters, Others In Campaign by 3Ebisco(op): 7:56pm On Jan 10, 2019
The People’s Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization (PPCO) on Wednesday challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to look inwards and see the array of drug barons, addicts, certificate forgers, money launderers and treasury looters that are assembled in the party and the recently inaugurated presidential campaign council.

The PDP also said that the assemblage of questionable characters in a party where their leader claims integrity is one of the puzzles that 2019 election will solve.

PPCO, in a statement by its Director, Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s malicious allegations against its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi, over campaign funding, will not help him in next month’s general election.

“It is unfortunate that President Muhammadu Buhari, who daily tells Nigerians of his commitment to a free, fair, credible and peaceful polls as well as issue based campaign will, within the same breath, mandate the officials of his party and members of his campaign to be engaging in malicious, vengeful and hate-inclined statements against respectable Nigerians whose integrity, competence and capacity overshadow his.”

PPCO said that unlike President Buhari, the PDP presidential candidate and his running mate, have unbroken records of fulfilling responsibilities in all the offices they have occupied.

“They come with a trajectory of successes in their various engagements in public office and have never been indicted by any statutory authority or court of competent jurisdiction in any matter whatsoever,” it said.

PPCO, which said that APC has questionable characters in its party and campaign council, said, “We are therefore not surprised by the descent of the APC to this irresponsible level of allegation as a subterfuge to divert public attention from President Buhari’s rejection, failure in governance and schemes to manipulate the 2019 general elections.”

The party urged “President Buhari and the APC to refrain from dirty politics as such will not deliver them from the rejection by Nigerians.”

PoliticsOkowa Inspects Multi-billion Naira Effurun-otor/ovwor Bridge by 3Ebisco(op): 8:26am On Jan 09, 2019
Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, has described the multi-billion naira Effurun-Otor/Ovwor Bridge as very vital as it will meet the yearnings of the people to have access roads to their communities.

Okowa, who paid an inspection visit to the site of the bridge construction on Tuesday, expressed satisfaction that the contractor was delivering the project to specifications and on schedule.

The people of the impacted communities in Ughelli South Local Government Area virtually turned the inspection visit to campaign rally; rolling out drums, singing and justifying why Governor Okowa should be returned in his re-election bid.

Okowa recalled in a brief chat with newsmen: “There was a time we came to inspect the road project and the people sent a delegation drawing our attention to the river which they must cross with canoe to meet their kith and kin; we looked at their plight and it is a thing of joy that we made the right decision; my joy is that the people are happy with what we are doing.

“When we make promises, we try as much as possible, relying on God to keep the promise; no part of Delta State should be deprived of basic amenities, no matter who is involved that is why we are constructing roads in the creeks, very soon, we shall be commissioning more projects in the riverine communities. From what we can see, the bridge is 80 per cent completed and the contractor has promised to complete in February, which is the major work as the access roads can only be constructed once the bridge is ready.”

Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye, disclosed that the bridge and road projects would cost more than N2 billion. “I am proud to be part of this government, our Governor, Senator Okowa is committed, very passionate about road construction, he believes the communities in the state should be linked by road because of the socio-economic benefits of having good roads,” he said.

One of the natives who spoke at the project site excitedly said: “Governor Okowa, the road master, is God-sent; he has given us road, vehicles can now get to our communities. We believe those who are contesting against him will step down because it is the turn of Delta North to complete two terms and we are comfortable with Dr Okowa as our Governor.”

SportsFootball: Queiroz Slams Critics After Iran's 5-0 Asian Cup Romp by 3Ebisco(op): 9:04am On Jan 08, 2019
ABU DHABI (AFP) - Iran coach Carlos Queiroz blasted his critics after his side crushed Yemen 5-0 on Monday (Jan 7) to fire an ominous warning to their Asian Cup title rivals.

The former Real Madrid boss praised his players for "suffocating" the Group D minnows in Abu Dhabi as they ruined the war-torn country's first outing at the Asian Cup.

But his mood turned dark when informed former national coach Branko Ivankovic, now in charge of Iran's most popular club Persepolis and a feuding adversary, had been talking up Iraq's coach Srecko Katanec while goading Queiroz to beat their bitter rivals.

"Now we turn to home affairs," sighed the Portuguese, who has frequently clashed with Iranian football officials and media since taking the job in 2011.

"This is the gentleman who used to call Iranian football a circus," added Queiroz, putting the boot into Croatian Ivankovic after dominating their opening Asian Cup fixture.

"At the moment 65 to 70 million people across Iran are praying for the national team, this intelligent man comes along to praise Iraq and its coach - brilliant, genius!" Mehdi Taremi scored twice for Iran, who are looking to end a 43-year title drought since last winning Asian football's most coveted prize.

Joint favourites with South Korea, Iran took just 12 minutes to take the lead as Taremi finished clinically from close range after a shot from Sardar Azmoun was fumbled by Yemen keeper Saud Alsowadi.

Captain Ashkan Dejagah doubled his side's lead in the 23rd minute with a low free kick which cannoned in off the post and the hapless Alsowadi before Taremi powered home a header moments later.

Azmoun tapped in a fourth goal seven minutes into the second half, by which time Iran were playing some champagne football, pulling off extravagant flicks and back-heels that left Yemen's players chasing shadows.

When substitute Saman Ghoddos volleyed home Iran's fifth from the edge of the box after 78 minutes the Yemen players looked physically shattered.

Only the woodwork prevented Mahdi Torabi adding a spectacular sixth in injury time.

"Fortunately for us the first goal came early and when you score early, it gives you the confidence and tranquility to control the game," said Queiroz, who has been linked with the Colombia job.

"We didn't give Yemen time to breathe." Iraq take on Vietnam in the other Group D game on Tuesday.

With players kidnapped by extremists, others going off to fight in the mountains or struggling to make ends meet driving taxis or working in supermarkets, just qualifying for the Asian Cup was an astonishing achievement for Yemen.

"I told the players at half-time to keep their heads up," said Yemen's Slovakian coach Jan Kocian.

"We lost 5-0 and we have to live with the result but we have two more games and we can play better."

PoliticsAbe, Tonye Cole Lose Out As Court Nullifies Apc’s Direct, Indirect Primaries In by 3Ebisco(op): 8:57pm On Jan 07, 2019
A Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, on Monday nullified the direct and indirect primary elections allegedly conducted by two factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers.

Delivering judgment, Justice Kolawole Omotosho, said both factions of the APC acted in disrespect of a pending suit before a Port Harcourt High Court.

It would be recalled that an APC governorship aspirant, Sen. Magnus Abe and other party members had approached the court presided over by Justice Chinwedu Worgu, challenging their alleged exclusion from the primaries.

Abe and his supporters had alleged high-handedness and irregularities in the planned conduct of the party primaries.

Justice Omotosho held that the APC in Rivers could not produce candidates for governorship, national and state assembly polls, while the matter was pending.

According to him, it is illegal for candidates for the 2019 elections to emerge from the two primaries conducted by the two factions.

The two primaries as claimed by the factions were held during the pendency of the matter at the state high court.

“Both the direct and indirect primaries claimed to have been held by the APC are illegal and cannot stand in the face of the law,’’ he said. (NAN)

PoliticsIllegal Declaration: Appeal Court Awards N30m Against Julius Berger, Police by 3Ebisco(op): 6:25am On Jan 07, 2019
The Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri has awarded the cost of N30 million against Julius Berger Nig. Plc and the Nigeria Police while upholding the judgment delivered by the Imo State High Court against the duo for what the court declared as illegally declaring wanted, a Lagos based human right crusader, Mr Emeka Ozoani.

Ozoani had filed a suit of gross violation of his fundamental rights delineated HOW/654/2012 before the Imo state High Court following a newspaper publication where the police declared him as a category ‘A’ wanted person in the Thisday Newspaper of September 4, 2012, asking the court for enforcement of his fundamental right and an order setting aside the declaration that he is a ‘category “A” wanted person as well as an order of perpetual injunction restraining and directing the respondents to jointly and severally tender apology to the applicant and also pay damages of N50 billion for the unlawful violation of his fundamental rights.

The suit was filed against the Inspector General of Police, the Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 9 Umuahia, ASP P.S. Njoku, Prosecuting officer in charge of OW/373c/2011 Zone 9, Umuahia, Peter Ogunyanwo, DCP Zone 9 Umuahia and Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and the Imo State High Court had on February 2013 in a judgment held that the police had grossly violated the fundamental rights of Mr Emeka Ozoani for declaring him ‘category “A” wanted person’.

Prior to the suit, the police had arrested, manhandled and assaulted the lawyer in the court premises over an allegation of forgery in the case HOW/581/2007 Mrs Philoma Ugo V. Julius Berger (Nigeria) Plc where he appeared as counsel. The court had ruled that police in the administration of justice are to prevent crime, investigate an allegation of crime and enforce laws and regulation but went beyond the scope of their duties by falsely and wrongly arresting and battering a person, then becoming culpable of criminal acts.

Dissatisfied with the judgment, Julius Berger Nig. Plc and the Nigeria Police proceeded to the Court of Appeal challenging the judgment that absolved the lawyer but in its judgment, the Appeal Court panel of judges, Raphael Chikwe Agbo, Ayobode and O.Lokulo-Sodipe, led by Rita Nosakhare Pemu upheld the high court judgment.

Justice Rita Pemu while delivering the lead judgment said, “It is no gainsaying that the economic downturn is endemic and keeps going down. The 5th respondents/cross-appellant is a legal practitioner. A respected one at that! In the course of carrying out his legitimate duties, he is pounced on with levity. His body and soul are bruised and his emotions toyed with. This is despicable; it against public policy for those who are supposed to enforce the rule of law, to collude with big multinational companies to oppress the people.

“The time has come in this country to cry aloud against these nefarious activities. The average man on the street should be able to walk the streets without fear of being molested by powers that be. The issue of the award of damages is discretionary and I am tempted not to interfere with the number of damages awarded the 5th respondent /cross-appellant.

“But with respect, N25 million is a far away from the amount claimed by the respondent/ cross-appellant. I would award the sum of N30 million because of the dire economic situation right now. It was bad enough in the year 2013 when judgment was delivered in this matter. It is even worse today economically.

“In the circumstances, I hereby award the sum of N30 million to the respondent instead of N25million awarded by the court below. The cross-appeal succeeds in part and I so order N100, 000.00 cost in his favour.”

The court of appeal held that the appeal filed by Julius Berger lacks merit and dismissed it in its entirety. “Where there is suspicion, it must be reasonable. It is the duty of Police to investigate crimes but not to be used as a tool of oppression by unscrupulous litigants in pursuit of their mischief.

PoliticsOil Pollution: Over 200 Ogonis Die Weekly From Organ Failures, Strange Sicknesse by 3Ebisco(op): 7:25am On Jan 06, 2019
Oil pollution is having a devastating effect on Ogoniland, Rivers State, with over 200 Ogonis dying weekly from organ failures, strange sicknesses, the new President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Mr. Fegalo Nsuke, has said. He made the claim on Friday, January 4, 2019, during the 27th celebration of the Ogoni Day in Bori.

“As a people, we currently face very difficult times. Over 200 Ogonis die weekly from organ failures and strange sicknesses. Our land is seriously threatened by the effects of Shell’s pollution of over 50 years. We must be united and tolerant of each other to save ourselves and our land,” Mr. Nsuke, who recently emerged MOSOP’s new leader, said in his speech.

On the solution to the travails of Ogonis, the MOSOP President said: “To the Nigerian people and government, we demand that our political rights to self determination – our rights to function in Nigeria as “OGONI PEOPLE” – must be respected.”

He, however, urged the Ogoni “to remain non-violent as we match to regain our lost dignity.”

Nsuke described the event as “a turning point in the history of our struggle for justice in Nigeria. Not only because a new leadership of the movement has emerged out of a strong determination and effort of the Ogoni People to break free from the past.”

He acknowledged the bruised egos arising from the election that produced him as MOSOP President but appealed for unity, saying: “It is normal for the differences and difficult times we faced during the past transition. However, elections have come and gone and it’s time to be united for the common good.”

Nsuke, a journalist and immediate past National Publicity Secretary of MOSOP, paid tribute to past Ogoni heroes, saluting “the spirit of our founding father, Hon. T.N. Paul Birabi, the spirit of our martyrs, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Chief Edward Kobani, Albert Badey, Theophilus Orage, Samuel Orage, John Kpuinen, NuBari Kiobel, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Felix Nuate, Daniel Gbokoo, Paul Levura, Baribor Bera and over 2,000 others.”

News Express reports that the event was graced by a large crowd of Ogonis from far and near.

Manchester United caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, admitted that his side didn’t play well against Reading on Saturday.

The Red Devils beat the Championship side 2-0 at Old Trafford but Reading were the better side.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, the Norwegian said: “There were nine changes,” said Solskjaer. “It’s never easy to get the rhythm and the tempo and the relations because they take a touch and then look at each other, they’re not used to playing with together.

“Even though we train together it’s different when you’re out there at Old Trafford. So, that was down to me a bit and again I need to see them out there to see how they reaction when we concede a goal. We struggled today but we came through.”

“It was a tough game, but 2-0 and a clean sheet [is good],” the 45-year-old said in a separate interview with MUTV .

“I made it tough for us because when you make nine changes it is never easy for a team that has never played together so delighted that we are in the next round.

“We work together every single day, every single game and of course we know we need some fitness work and work on relations but today I put a team together that has never played together and we are through so that is good.”

PoliticsAmina Zakari: Fayose Responds To Presidency’s Claim That PDP Appointed Buhari’s by 3Ebisco(op): 12:59pm On Jan 05, 2019
The immediate Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has stated that the Amina Zakari saga is a moral burden on the Presidency and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Fayose said the Presidency was being pushed by desperation to rig the coming elections.

He described the outcry over the appointment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s niece, Zakari as head of the INEC collation centre for the general elections as a moral burden on the President Buhari, his party, the APC and the electoral commission in particular.

He said the defense of the appointment by the Presidency and INEC was a further show of despiration to rig the February 16 presidential election despite the president’s glaring rejection by Nigerians.

He said this in a statement forwarded to DAILY POST on Saturday, by his Media Aide, Lere Olayinka.

He added that, “A president, who took oath of office that he will be equitable and fair to all must be seen to be acting in accordance with this oath and the moment issues like this are raised, it is not for INEC and the Presidency to be rigid and act as if they don’t care.”

He described the Presidency’s defense that Amina Zakari was appointed by a PDP government as puerile and unacceptable, saying, “When Amina Zakari was appointed as INEC National Commissioner, President Buhari, her blood relation was not a presidential candidate.

“In fact, the President had even vowed never to run for the presidency after the 2011 election. Now that he is candidate and also a sitting President, fairness and equity demands that she should step aside from playing any role in this election.”

“Certain things can be good, but might not morally right. This issue of Amina Zakari, a known blood relation of the APC presidential candidate functioning as INEC head of collation centre is morally wrong.

“Possibility of bias is being raised, INEC and the Presidency should be reminded of the position of Lord Denning on how the issue of likelihood of bias should be viewed.

“Even if Amina Zakari can be as impartial as she can be, nevertheless, now that Nigerians are thinking that there is real likelihood of her being bias, she should excuse herself. More so that she is not the only National Commissioner in INEC.

“Should the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar and other presidential candidates also have their relatives as part of INEC committee on collation of results?

“Therefore, the Presidency and INEC have the moral burden to prove to Nigerians that they are not in any way out to shortchanged them.”

Accusing the APC federal government of desperation to rig the elections, Fayose said “it won’t be a surprise if tomorrow, Nigerians are told that the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim has been extended, not because he has done well protecting Nigerians, but in furtherance to the plot to use the security agencies to rig the elections.”

He said former President Goodluck Jonathan’s patriotic decision to appoint Prof Atahiru Jega as INEC Chairman was the reason President Buhari won the 2015 election and the President should rather be concerned with sustaining that legacy of credible elections that he inherited instead of desperate pursuit of his reelection.

PoliticsYari Reveals Why He Might Quit As Governor by 3Ebisco(op): 9:55pm On Jan 03, 2019
Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, on Thursday said that if declaration of state of emergency in his state will solve the security problems, he is ready to quit as Governor.

Yari made this admission, while speaking with State House correspondents, after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Noting that the security situation in the state has improved, the Governor said the bandits responsible for the insecurity, breed their cattle in the forest and strike occasionally.

While stating that he met the President over the security situation in the state, Yari said the issue of the armed banditry was being exaggerated.

“There is no place being occupied by the armed bandits in Zamfara state. They live and operate in the forest. They strike and run. Most of the camps are known by locals,” he said.

On his support for declaration of emergency in Zamfara, he said he was not playing politics with it, saying “I was not being political, we are talking about human lives here. If that is what will stop this thing, I am ready to step down.”

Asked whether he discussed the declaration of emergency with Buhari, he said, “not at all”.

Melaye approached the court through his lawyer, Nkem Okoro of the Mike Ozekhome (SAN) chambers, for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights.

In the ex-parte application, Melaye prayed the court for an interim order of the court directing the police to vacate his residence and remove all blockades in front of the residence and allow his family and political associates to have access to him.

He also sought an order restraining the police from further threatening his life or putting his life in jeopardy pending the determination of the substantive suit.

However, the judge, Justice N.E. Maha, refused the application and ordered an accelerated hearing of the substantive suit.

The matter was thereafter adjourned to January 14.

But Makelele is not a fan of his countryman’s flamboyant showboating.

Speaking on Astro SuperSport’s Sunday Night Live show, the former Real Madrid midfielder suggested Pogba was disrespectful and revealed how he would have dealt with him in his playing days.

“One example is Thierry Henry. When he scored a goal before, everybody was like, ‘F*****g hell, many goals, he’s never happy’.

“One day I tell Thierry, ‘Why?’. He said, ‘It’s the way I celebrate my goal. I know people don’t like this, but I’m like this. I can’t change this.

“Pogba, he’s like this, he can’t change this. We accept this – it’s Pogba.

“For me, it means sometimes you don’t respect your opponent, you know?

“It’s frustrating. I’m fronting Pogba. I want to tell him, ‘Listen, do this in the dressing room, not now. It’s frustrating. You win 4-0, you’re dancing in front of me,” Makelele said.
