HealthDid You Know What The Fear Of Going To School Is Called? by 3pleDAssistant(op): 1:14pm On May 17, 2021
HEALTH AND EDUCATION

Phobia!

You probably know what that means. Phobia simply translates as an irrational or abnormal fear of or aversion to something. It is derived from the Greek work 'phobos' which means fear or horror.

There are quite a myriad of things which different people have a phobia for out there and many of them have their names or appellations in the English language. For example, the fear of water is called 'Hydrophobia'.

Now, you ever wonder what it is called if someone has a fear of school or going to school?

That is called 'Didaskaleinophobia'.

Didaskaleinophobia is derived from Greek word 'Didasko' meaning 'to teach' and of course 'phobos' meaning aversion or fear.

So did you know this before? Which other phobia do you know and think many others most likely do not know?

LiteratureDid You Know Where The Name 'jessica' Originated From? by 3pleDAssistant(op): 1:02pm On May 17, 2021
HISTORY AND LITERATURE

Did you know: Shakespeare COULD HAVE invented the name 'Jessica'.

You most likely have heard the name Jessica and you probably love it because it's quite beautiful. Another reason why you may love it is because one out of the many celebrity Jessicas out there (such as Alba [actress], Chastain [actress], Gomez [model], Andrews [country music singer] e.t.c.) is your favourite celebrity.

But do you know the origin of the name?

Well, there's an iconic historic personality that surrounds the origin of that name and the person is no other than the legendary English playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616).

Now, while William Shakespeare MAY NOT have invented the name, the earliest or oldest written record of the name with its current spelling is found as the name of the character 'Jessica' in the 16th-century Shakespearean play 'The Merchant of Venice'. The play is believed to have been written between 1596 and 1599. Jessica (in the play) was the daughter of Shylock, a miserly Jew and moneylender.

It is also said that the name may have been an Anglicization of the biblical Hebrew name 'Iscah', the name of a daughter of Haran briefly mentioned in the Book of Genesis 11:29.

So there you have it. What do you think? Do you think he actually invented it or it is not necessarily the case even if the first written record of the name is credited to him?

PetsJuliana, The Dog That Got Two Blue Cross Medals by 3pleDAssistant(op): 2:32pm On May 16, 2021
HISTORY

It is widely believed, with a sense of pride in our humanity, that the wonderful potentials human beings are blessed with, if utilised judiciously, enable us to perform laudable and astounding actions and inventions that save and better the lives of humankind and other forms of life on the face of the earth.

But history has proven that it's not only human beings that perform incredible actions that are deserving of recognition and honour. Surprisingly, some animals have proven they have talents too.

One of such animals is a Great Dane (dog) that goes by the name Juliana.

Juliana was awarded two Blue Cross medals in her lifetime. Do you wonder what incredible actions she did that made her deserving of both awards? Well, we'll tell you and trust us, they're quite incredible.

The first action was performed during World War II. Wikipedia reports - "In April 1941, two years into World War II , incendiary bombs were being dropped across Britain during The Blitz . One such device is believed to have fallen through the roof of the house in which Juliana and her owner lived. The dog is reported to have stood over the bomb and urinated on it, extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading. She was awarded her first Blue Cross medal for her actions." [End quote]

Incredible right?

Well, the second heroic action was performed 3 years after that. Wikipedia reports - "Juliana was celebrated as a hero for a second time when, in November 1944, she again helped to save the lives of her owners. After a fire had taken hold in their shoe shop, she alerted her master's family to the impending danger. For this she was awarded a second medal. The second medal, along with a portrait of Juliana, was discovered during a house clearance in Bristol. The items were sold together at a Gloucestershire auction in September 2013, with the auctioneer describing Juliana as "a Great Dane with a great bladder". Initially expected to achieve £60, the sale reached £1,100 with the winning bid coming from an anonymous buyer." [End quote]

Juliana was reported to have later died in 1946 from poisoning after she got in contact with a substance that was posted through her owner's letterbox.

So there you have it, a dog with two medals. We're not trying to be a-holes, but you as a human being, how many have you ever gotten in your life? grin grin

Science/TechnologyDid You Know What The First Computer Mouse Was Made Of? by 3pleDAssistant(op):
HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY

Did you know? The first computer mouse was made of...

Okay! Let's stop right there. Now, let's start again!

In this 'modern' age, it will be quite unbelievable if a person, especially the youth population, were to say he/she doesn't know what a computer mouse is. Pretty much everyone knows. And another thing everyone knows, which of course arises from mere observation of the mouse, is that the mouse (not entirely though) is made from plastic.

But was it always like that? Well, surprisingly not.

As we go back in the pages of history, it turns out that the very first mouse was made of a different material.

In case you didn't know, an American engineer and inventor Douglas Engelbart (1925 - 2013) is credited to have invented the computer mouse and in 1964, with the help of another American computer engineer Bill English (1929 - 2020), Engelbart developed the very first computer mouse. And guess what? Different from the material used in the design of today, It was made out of wood!

Douglas Engelbart

Bill English

It was rectangular in shape, featured a little button on the top right and had two wheels used to roll back and forth.

And later on, computer mouse designs which featured not only a change in the material used but also the addition of multiple buttons followed.

So there you have it; the knowledge of what the first mouse was made of. Did you know this before? What did you think it was when you just started reading from the beginning of this post?

Science/TechnologyYou Most Likely Know The First Man On The Moon. But Do You Know The Second? by 3pleDAssistant(op):
HISTORY AND SCIENCE

Most people know the first man to step on the moon; Neil Armstrong. And you most likely know it too. But you probably do not know who the second man was.

Such is life, isn't it? People hardly pay as much attention to the person who comes second or even below that. But if you ever wondered who the second was, let us help you out.

His name is Buzz Aldrin.

Buzz Aldrin (still alive) is a former astronaut, engineer and fighter pilot who was born on the 20th of January, 1930 (91 years old). Aldrin made three spacewalks as pilot of the 1966 Gemini 12 mission, and as the lunar module pilot on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, he and mission commander Neil Armstrong were the first two people to land on the Moon. Following the deaths of Armstrong in 2012 and Michael Collins in 2021, Aldrin is now the last surviving crew member of Apollo 11.

He was on the same 'Apollo 11' mission (July 1969) which saw the spaceflight that first landed humans on the moon and he flew in the same spacecraft as Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

Buzz Aldrin reportedly stepped on the moon 19 minutes after Armstrong did, making him the second man to step and walk on the moon.
