1. The Pan-American Highway




This is the longest road in the world and it is comprised of a network of roads that starts in Prudhoe Bay in Alaska and stretches all the way to Ushuaia in Argentina covering a distance of 30,000 miles.



The Guinness World Records has named the Pan-American Highway the longest motorable road in the world.


The road cross a total of 14 countries in North, Central, and South America, it also links to many other countries.


The road passes through all the major climatic zones, tropical jungles, arid deserts, boreal forests, prairies, arctic tundra, mountains, and varied landscapes.

The first portion of the highway was completed by Mexico in 1950.

Mexico solely built and financed the portions of the highway extending through the country, while the sections through the smaller Central American countries were constructed with assistance from the US.

2. Highway 1 Australia.



Highway 1 in Australia is a network of highways that run around the country joining all the state capitals in the mainland Australia.


The Highway 1 covers a distance of 9,000 miles and is one of the longest highways in the world.


Each day more than one million people travel on the part of the road.


Highway 1 was constructed in 1955 after a compilation of the already existing local tracks and roads.


It is the only route to connect all the Australian territories and states except of the Australian Capital Territory.

3. Trans-Siberian, Russia




The trans-Siberian highway in Russian is made up of a network of federal highways that stretches across the entire country.


From the eastern side, it starts at St. Petersburg to Vladivostok covering a distance of 6,800 miles long.


The part of the road from St. Petersburg to Irkutsk has been in existence long before even the railway came into existence and the earliest written records of the road was in 1876.

4. Trans-Canada highway



The highway is transcontinental systems of roads maintained by both the federal and provincial governments and stretches from the west coast of Pacific Ocean and passes through all the 10 provinces of Canada to the east coast at the Atlantic Ocean, linking all major cities.


The highway covers a distance of 4,999 miles long.


The highway was approved by the Trans-Canada highway act of 1949 and the construction begun in 1950.


It was officially inaugurated in 1962 and its completion was in 1971.


At its completion it was the world’s longest uninterrupted highway and it was distinct with the white on green maple leaf markings along its stretch.


In 2012, a number of public vehicle charging stations were installed along the highway by the Sun Country Highway company to allow owners of electric vehicles to travel across the entire highway.


The highway extends east-west from Victoria in British Columbia to St. John's City in Newfoundland and Labrador.

National Highway, India




Comprising of a network of highways, connecting the four major Indian cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, the Golden Quadrilateral is the fifth longest highway in the world. Planning work for the 5,846km long highway was completed in 1999, construction commenced in 2001 and the highway was completed in January 2012.

The highway was constructed with an investment of INR 600bn ($9.2bn) and is maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways.

The highway features four to six lanes along the entire route.

It was constructed in four sections, each awarded to different contractors.

6. China National Highway 010



China National Highway 010, also known as Tongsan Expressway, is 5,700km long, ranking as one of the longest highway in the world.


It is also the longest China National Highway.

The highway extends from Tongjiang City in eastern Heilongjiang Province to Sanya in Hainan Province.


It is one of the five north-south highways and the seventh east-west highway in China.

It passes through provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong.

7. US Route 20




US Route 20, which stretches 5,415km in an east-west direction from Boston, Massachusetts, to Newport, Oregon, is the seventh longest highway in the world and the longest road in the US.

The highway was commissioned in 1926 and was extended in 1940. It crosses nine US states and is split into two by Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park.

US Route 6, also known as Grand Army of the Republic Highway, stretches from Bishop, California, to Provincetown, Massachusetts. Stretching 5,158km, it is the eighth longest highway in the world, and the second-longest highway and longest continuous highway in the US.

9. Interstate 90 (I-90), US




Interstate 90 (I-90) runs from Boston, Massachusetts, to Seattle, Washington.


The highway is 4,860.2km long ranking as the ninth longest highway in the world and the longest Interstate Highway in the US.

The highway runs parallel to the US Route 20 for the most part and passing through 13 states.


The I-90's construction commenced in the 1950s.


The entire highway was completed in 1985.

Interstate 80 (I-80), also known as Christopher Columbus Highway in certain parts along its route, is a 4,666km long highway making it the 10th longest highway in the world and second longest interstate highway in the US.

The highway begins at an interchange with U.S. Route 101 in San Francisco, California, and ends at New Jersey,

7. I-10Located in Arizona, United States



The I-10 is 89 miles (143km) of dead straight road outside Phoenix. The road, with two slight corners over 80 miles, links Buckeye (in Maricopa County) and Brenda (in La Paz County).

It’s a straight road running right through the desert for 1 h 14 min.



8. SK-33 W, Canada



Located in the heart of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, the SK-33 W is 85 mile (138km) stretch of straightness near Regina.

This asphalted road links Stoughton and Regina, the capital city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

Expect 1 h 22min to drive this section.





9. I-80W, United States


Located in the heart of the state of Nebraska, the I-80 W is 77.7 miles (125km) stretch of straightness near Lincoln.

This asphalted road, known as the Cristopher Columbus Highway, links Lincoln, the capital of the state of Nebraska and Grand Island in Hall County.

Expect 1 h 4min to drive this section.




10. CO-17, United States


Located in Colorado, United States, the CO-17 is 48 miles (77km) of dead straight road located in the San Luis Valley.

The road is asphalted and links US-285 and Alamosa. It’s a straight road running right through the valley for46 min.

Some of these roads took more than 30yrs to build. Hopefully, the 'Giant of Africa' will finish her trans coastal highway someday too.

I learnt about Lagos-Mombasa highway in social studies then. Please has anyone seen the highway before?
