The group of people that made him to utter that statement was Nnamdi KANU. That's to show that the struggle has been on which made him call for national conference. We all knew how tensions were all over the country during the election and peace came immediately the north won and blood shed was avoided.

Why are these people afraid of allowing Igbos go ? I bet you if Yorubas wants to go today Nigerians would gladly allow them and if Hausas wants to go too I bet you Nigerians would gladly allow them. So somebody should be able to tell us why they dont want the Igbos to go

No president worth his salt will say the unity of the country he presides over is negotiable.

The world over, a group of people who wants to secede will go through either of two options:

1. Referendum: This is only applicable if there is provision for such in the constitution. Unfortunately for all of us, our constitution doesn't provide for it which means no president has that privilege to allow it else he'd be committing an impeachable offence. To take this route, the group wishing to secede MUST first work to get the constitution amended through the NASS. And if GEJ from SS region couldn't work for that amendment, it's foolish to expect a president from any other region to work for it.

2. Violence: This unfortunately is the only other option. We all know what comes with it are death, destruction, sorrow, hunger and many other humanitarian crisis. If you didn't witness the civil war of 1966, and you were too young to see what happened in Liberia, Somalia, Rwanda and many other African countries, you're surely seeing what is happening in Syria, Central African Republic, DRC and many others.

So, PMB is right to have said it unequivocally that Nigeria's unity is not negotiable just as those before him were right in saying so.

The earlier the Chief Idiot and Pig of Biafra (Terrorist Kanu) and his fellow idiots and pigs realized this and be guided, the better for all of us.

If the constitution does not av anything like referendum in it,it is the smart play of the writer of the constitution and that is why pple are calling for constitution amendment, the constitution should be amended based on the realities on ground as what is the situation in 1999,is not the same as 2017. Secondly, nigeria is a signatory to the laws that bind the United Nations,African Union, and Ecowas,so as a result of that they are abide to respect such laws because it is not selective. Anything about nigeria is scam even you know the truth. Restructure, you say NO,Separation, you say NO.

Funny thing about these pigs & idiots of biafra (ipob) is that kanu doesn't even sound smart at all. There's no intelligence in his speeches, just vane and full of insults. How he manages to pull so much crowd from a tribe that boasts of intelligent people still bewilders me.

Why do you think people are worried/scared about/of the so called 'Kaduna declaration' and the follow up anti-Igbo song in the North when the people that made the declaration can't stand up against 5,000 non-northerners?
Hate is such a strong binding force for the weak and violent-prone. Once you make a group perceive the other group as an enemy, be sure to have followers. This in one of the reasons people like FFK, though intelligent, has a good number of supporters even when he does not have the moral ground to condemn anyone.

All those who had led people into war or any form of violence (supprisingly had massive followership) have one thing in common; HATE.

Unfortunately, our politician had succeeded in turning Nigeria into a brooding ground for hate.

The elites and political class in Nigeria from all regions and tribes have the same agenda and mindset. This is because they are the chief beneficiaries of the present Nigeria. They do not know what their fate will be in a divided Nigeria.

Therefore you won't expect the senators or governors even from the east to support a change of status quo that has favored them so much.
The drive to effect changes in this country will have to come from non political quarters not politicians. So it is our duty to discard these political statements and pursue a new restructured Nigeria if we remain together.
Whether divided or United Nigeria, what is important is to make progress and if at @57 we still haven't made any substantial progress, then something has to change fundamentally.

Great talk!

I could not agree more. Nigerians are so ignorant and they hate reality with passion. Instead of chasing possibility, some people are chasing mirage. Such a huge misplacement of scarce resource - TIME.

Nigeria will stand despite anything. Distractions are passing phases.

Nobody is praising Jonathan for anything. This thread is just to expose the hypocrisy of those condemning president Buhari for saying the same thing. If there was no outcry when Jonathan said the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable, why the outcry now?

No the thread does not expose any hypocrisy. Forget the topic and read through the speech, you'd see that even though he said the nation's unity was non negotiable he placed emphasis on dialogue below:

Jonathan said: “Even as we remain resolute in our conviction that our union is non-negotiable, we must never be afraid to embrace dialogue and strengthen the basis of this most cherished union. A strong nation is not that which shies away from those difficult questions of its existence, but that which confronts such questions, and together provides answers to them in a way that guarantees fairness, justice and equity for all stakeholders.
“My call for the National Conference in this first year of our second century is to provide the platform to confront our challenges. I am confident that we shall rise from this conference with renewed courage and confidence to march through the next century and beyond, to overcome all obstacles on the path to the fulfillment of our globally acknowledged potential for greatness.”
Stressing that nation-building is not only for great leaders and elites, he said: “All Nigerians must be involved in this national endeavour. From the threads of our regional, ethnic and religious diversities we must continuously weave a vibrant collage of values that strengthen the Nigerian spirit.

It's different from a blatant threatening speech from a man who has done almost everything in the evil book to mentally and psychologically crush people who see things differently from him. Buhari is simply shying away from the problem of our diversity instead of find a way to unite sparing factions.

When Buhari threatened the peace of the nation after loosing in 2011, GEJ didn't arrest him cos he understood that doing that would further destroy the little peace in the country after the elections. Buhari did the opposite with Nnamdi Kanu and the result is staring us in the face

3years ago, they thought GEJ was for them only to be shocked at the dying minute that they had lost all and spontaneously diverted there pain to an agitation for secession.

It's a constant that if they continue to play politics of hate and ethno-religion, they still be where they re in 50years time and will still be agitating at same time!

For ur info a constitution cannot n will never supercede the fundamental human right to make a choice for one to be in a marriage or unity . Every entity has a right to seek for seccesion when ever they so please, irrespective of What is written or not written in the constitution. Cos they came together First before creating a constitution. they could as well decide to separate without refering to the constitution.

The constitution is supreme. It contains your rights. Every time there is a military coup, the first thing the coup plotters do is to suspend the constitution (which automatically suspends your rights).

While every region has the freedom to ask for anything they like, they cannot manipulate the constitution to get it. No one is above the law (represented by the constitution). If you want to secede, you have to first pressurize the NASS into having a constitutional amendment where modifications can be made to existing laws or perhaps adding new clauses to the constitution. In the case of Igbos, all they need is an inclusion of referendum in the constitution. Once it is included, they can now start negotiating. As at present, all Nnamdi and IPOB are doing is just making noise and exercising their rights to make demands. It is all a waste of time.
