It actually started from the little you mentioned. It's a rule of thumb that once a man gets one million he desires and longs for 10m, and once he gets 10m he wants 50m next.

In life, the higher you go up the ladder of wealth, the more secluded you become. You then want your own space and total privacy cos you've become wary of everyday people...

Besides, most of those houses were actually choices made by wives to the wealthy men or the wealthy women themselves, we all know how vain women can be when there's a lot of money to throw around.

Why do most people desire fame, mega mansion with over 10 bedrooms,etc. Instead of an average 4 bedroom house, 1 or 2 cars and a quiet life? Or even simple 3 bedroom apartment. Also, if free public transportation is introduced, do you think most people will use public bus or will they still desire to have big cars?
