Lagos State government has urged motorists to ensure computerised inspection of their vehicles in order to ascertain the condition even as it said a total number of 779 vehicles were inspected since the exercise took off in March.

Addressing journalists during a facility tour at Lagos Computerised Vehicle Inspection Center LACVIS, Head, Planning and Research and Coordinator, LACVIS Project, Engr Olayemi Olumide, said this will minimise accidents.

According to him, the step is in line with global best practices as LACVIS will leave no stone unturned to ensure that lives and property are safe on the highways. He said that out of the vehicles inspected, 263 vehicles passed the tests while 516 failed and owners asked to fix the problems within 30 days and repeat the inspection which include braking, steering, chasis, emission, lighting system, tyres, suspension, visibility and supplementary tests. Olumide said 10 computerised vehicle inspection centers will be built across the state by December. “All corporate organisations, associations, unions and other commercial vehicles owners whose vehicle documentations hae expired are required to bring their vehicles physically forbcomputerised inspection while private vehicles are to be inspected annually and commercial vehicle bi-annually. The inspection of vehicles will enable the state to develop a data base of vehicles so as to ascertain condition of vehicles due to state of roads or fake spare parts”, he said. Also speaking, LACVIS Chief Operating Officer, Mr Segun Ogunnaike, said the exercise was geared towards safety.
