Cote D’Ivoire 1984 Nations Cup Final (18 March 1984)

For some strange reason I remember the 1980 and 1988 nations cups very well, but I don’t remember the 1984 and 1986 nations cups that well. In fact, the only two things I remember about the 1984 Nations Cup are that

1) We defeated Ghana
2) Theophile Abega

Nigeria played against Cameroon in the final of Cote D’Ivoire ’84. Muda Lawal (one of my favourite Nigerian players ever) gave Nigeria the lead in the 10th minute and Rene Ndjeya equalised for Cameroon. Then magic happened in the 79th minute. Theophile Abega waltz through the Nigerian defence (it was so beautiful! He was like a ballerina.) he played a give-and-go with Roger Milla and fired a shot that beat Okala in Nigeria’s goal. It was amazing.

Ernest Ebongue scored in the 84th minute to give Cameroon their first Nations Cup title.

Cameroon 3 – 1 Nigeria.

Maroc 1988 Nations Cup Group Game (17 March 1988)

Nigeria took a fantastic squad to the 1988 Nations Cup and everybody believed that this was our opportunity to win our second title. However, we were drawn in a group of death with Cameroon, Egypt and Kenya. We destroyed Kenya 3-0 and then played our second match against Cameroon (a repeat of the 1984 final).

Rashidi Yekini did great work down the right and crossed the ball to Samuel Okwaraji who fired in a thunderous shot from outside the box to give Nigeria the lead in the second minute. This was the fastest goal in Nations Cup history at the time and it was used in the opening montage of the NTA Network News in the late 1980s and early ‘90s.

Roger Milla equalised for Cameroon in the 21st minute via a bullet header that beat Peter Rufai in the Nigerian goal and it ended

Nigeria 1-1 Cameroon

Maroc 1988 Nations Cup Final. (27 March 1988). The beginning of the anger against Hayatou

Nigeria finished at the top of the group after a goalless draw with Egypt. Cameroon was second. We then played an incredible semi-final with Algeria with scores at 1-1 at the end of extra time and which required the then longest penalty kick series in Nations Cup history to separate the teams. (I almost died of tension. My dad stopped watching and went to sleep because he couldn’t stand the tension). Nigeria won the penalty shootout 9-8.

Nigeria played Cameroon again in the final.

And that’s when it happened. It was a fantastic counter attack. The ball out from defence was perfect. Folorunsho Okenla kept it from going out and passed to Samuel Okwaraji who played a perfect cross for Henry Nwosu to head it into the goal. It was a perfect goal. The referee disallowed it for no known reason. There were two Cameroonian defenders that kept Nwosu onside, but the referee disallowed the goal for no known reason.

You can see it again at 20.27 in the video below.

Sunday Eboigbe tackled Roger Milla at the edge of the penalty box in the second half. Milla fell into the box and the referee awarded a penalty to Cameroon. (You decide if it was a penalty). Emmanuel Kunde stepped up and slotted the ball past Peter Rufai to give Cameroon their second Nations Cup victory. It ended

Cameroon 1-0 Nigeria

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCp8DbRQnZs

The Moroccan fans felt that Nigeria was being cheated and the ended up supporting Nigeria and booing Cameroon. Many Nigerians felt that the referee was biased against Nigeria because the new CAF president, Issa Hayatou, was Cameroonian.

The Federal Government organised a grand reception for the national team and the vice president, Admiral Aikhomu declared that the Eagles were super. Some Nigerians had complained that the name Green Eagles had brought bad luck to the team and others argued that there was no such thing as a green eagle (they were wrong), so the new name stuck and the Green Eagles became the Super Eagles.

(by the way, during the opening ceremony the women in my house were raving about the handsome Moroccan crown prince [now the king] and his handsome brother. You can also see them in this video).

Italia 1990 World Cup Qualifier (27 August 1989, Stade Omnisports, Yaoundé).

Legendary former Nigerian player and coach, Paul “The Wonder Boy” Hamilton was appointed the chief coach of the Green/Super Eagles in the mid-1980s. A German, Manfred Hoener was appointed Technical Adviser of the national team in 1987 and made Paul Hamilton’s boss. Hoener and Hamilton led the Eagles to the Maroc ’88 Nations Cup and the Seoul ’88 Olympics. Hoener was involved in a disagreement with the NFA after the disastrous Olympics performance and he quit.

Paul Hamilton was back in charge of the team again, but the NFA treated him like dirt. In fact, he often had to use his own money to hire buses to take the team to the stadium to train.

Then in 1989 the NFA appointed another foreigner, the Dutchman Clemens Westerhof as technical adviser of the Super Eagles. Westerhof’s first game was against Cameroon in Yaounde.

Two weeks before the game Samuel Okwaraji slumped and died at the National Stadium in Lagos in a game against Angola during the previous round of the World Cup qualifiers. Henry Nwosu also couldn’t make the game in Yaounde because he didn’t have permission from his club Asec Mimosas.

So Westerhof’s first game was a crucial World Cup qualifier against rivals Cameroon. Nigeria, which was at the top of the group, needed just a draw to qualify for the next round. The players promised to win the game in honour of Okwaraji.

However Nigeria lost via a 31st minute strike by Francois Omam Biyick. Cameroon (on 9 points) qualified for the next round and Nigeria (on 7 points) crashed out.

Senegal ’92 Nations Cup Third Place Match (January 25, 1992)

Nigeria lost to Ghana in that painful semi-final of Senegal ’92 and then played Cameroon in the third place match.

Cyrille Makanaky missed a penalty in the first half and Friday Ekpo scored for Nigeria via a 77th minute freekick. Kesack Maboang equalised for Cameroon in the 85th minute.

The Cameroonian defence had heavily policed the most dangerous man in Africa and highest goal scorer of the competition, Rashidi Yekini, but he broke free in the 88th minute for a classic Nigerian counter attack (which would become common between 1991-1994). A long ball from the opponent’s half is played in front of Yekini who is on the run. He outruns the defenders and slots the ball in the goal. Thus it ended

Nigeria 2-1 Cameroon.

Ghana-Nigeria 2000 Nations Cup Final (13 February 2000, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos).

The 2000 Nations Cup was co-hosted by Ghana and Nigeria. Nigeria was just coming out of what was probably the best era in its football history in which it won the 1994 Nations Cup, qualified for its first and second World Cups and won the 1996 Olympics football tournament.

Cameroon had had its golden era in the 1980s, winning two Nations Cups and also reaching the quarterfinals of the 1990 World Cup, but it suffered a terrible slump after that and had a disgraceful appearance at the 1994 World Cup.

Note: Raphael Chukwu Ndukwe, who scored in this match, was one of the television commentators (summariser) during Nigeria’s last match against Cameroon in Uyo on September 1st 2017.

Samuel Eto’o gave Cameroon the lead in the 26th minute off a freekick and Patrick Mboma doubled the lead 31st minute. Chukwu Ndukwe scored for Nigeria just before half time and Jay Jay Okocha equalised for Nigeria at the beginning of the second half via a thunderous strike. It was 2-2 at the end of extra time and then came the penalty kicks.

Okocha and Godwin Okpara scored their penalties for Nigeria as did Patrick Mboma and Pierre Wome for Cameroon. Then Kanu missed his penalty and Geremi scored his. Ikpeba was adjudged to have missed his penalty, despite the fact that it actually crossed the line (Ikpeba didn’t help matters. He put his hand on his head as if he had missed). Marc Vivian Foe also missed his penalty.Oliseh scored and Rigobert Song also scored to give Cameroon their third Nations Cup victory. It ended

Tunisia 2004 Nations Cup Quarter Final (8 February 2004)

Samuel Eto’o scored for Cameroon off a fast break and Jay Jay Okocha equalised three minutes later from a fantastic freekick. And then there was a moment of magic.

Kanu Nwankwo got the ball in the middle of the park. The Cameroonians were confused because as soon as Kanu got the ball John Utaka ran to the right and Osaze Odemwingie, who had scored two goals against South Africa in the previous match, ran to the left. They didn’t know who to chase. Kanu chose to pass the ball to Utaka, who scored to give Nigeria victory. It ended

These are obviously not the only matches between the two countries, but these are epic encounters between them. The two countries have played many matches against themselves, e.g. they played a friendly in 2015 that Nigeria won 3-0
