We'll stop posting corps members to insecure states - NYSC

The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier- General Ismaila Tsiga, has reiterated that the agency will stop posting corps members to states, communities or local government areas considered insecure for the lives of youths serving their fatherland.

Tsiga made this known on Tuesday in Ibadan during a visit to the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana, at his palace.

The NYSC boss, who admitted that the greatest challenge of the scheme was threat to lives of the corps members in some states of the federation, said he had already taken the decision to redeploy corps members in troubled states or communities to other states, emphasising that nobody would be posted to the areas in the nearest future.

The NYSC boss, lamenting the prevalent joblessness of corps members after the service year, said the NYSC had collaborated with the office of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to train willing corps members on skills for self-employment and equip them with N250,000 to start their own businesses.

He thanked the Olubadan for his role in ensuring that the corps members posted to Oyo State and Ibadan not only received adequate care from the people, but also secure and unmolested.

Receiving Tsigba in his palace, Oba Odulana commended him for his visit and charged him to do his best to alleviate the suffering of the youths by providing jobs for them, adding that by doing this, the 9th DG would have reduced the terrible vices imposed on the society by the politicians.

If the government truely cared about the safety of corps members this would have been facilitated decades ago

Not sure what Yardstick they will use to determine what town is insecure in Nigeria?

I think the best thing is every graduate should be sent to their own LGA to contribute to their own people.

The purpose of NYSC we were told at the camp was to bridge the divide between North and South after the civil war. Well 40years after the civil war even our President is not even showing that he understands the least bit about respect for those who don't speak his language or worship the same God as him. Clearly this policy has failed to achieve nothing other than putting the lives of young boys and girls at risk for nothing.

I think corpers should be sent to their own State to contribute in one way or the other to the development of their own people.

Great suggestion. But it would in no way foster community cohesion.

Very good move.

The entire programme should be scrapped. Bloody waste of time.
