Cameraman pulls off daring escape

Lagos - A cameraman who was among three members of a South African television crew abducted in Nigeria has fled to safety and is now in Lagos, an official from the M-Net channel told reporters.

Alexander Effiong, a Nigerian cameraman, "fled from his abductors and has now arrived in Lagos", M-Net SuperSport general manager in Nigeria, Felix Awogu, said in a telephone interview.

"The young man took a big risk. He ran away from them and he is now back to us in Lagos," he said, declining to give details of his escape.

Awogu expressed optimism that the remaining two captives - South African television production engineer Nick Greyling and Nigerian sports commentator Bowie Attamah - would soon be released.

I am very positive about their imminent release. I am sure that very soon, they will be set free. The acting president of Nigeria, the Imo state police command and ministers are involved in attempts to secure their release," he said.

He said he had spoken with the two captives still being held and that they are "fine".

"We are also in talks with the abductors," he said, insisting that payment of a ransom for their release was not yet being discussed.

Ransom demands in Nigeria range from several hundred thousand dollars to millions depending on the wealth and status of the hostage, although kidnappers will often accept lower sums.

Gunmen Monday afternoon snatched the M-Net SuperSport crew members after ambushing a bus carrying them to the airport in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, which neighbours the oil hub of Rivers State.

Earlier on Tuesday, the police in the state said they were investigating the kidnapping.

"Investigations into the case have commenced," state police spokesperson Linus Nwaiwu told reporters.

"Our detectives are on the ground and after these investigations I believe in the next few days you will have a different story," he added.

The crew were returning from covering a football match in the nearby city of Enugu, 150km away.

Kidnappings are relatively common in Nigeria's restive oil-rich south, where they originally targeted oil workers. However in recent months, they have spread to other parts of the country, including Lagos.

M-Net Multichoice Africa spokesperson Caroline Creasy in Johannesburg said the channel had entrusted the matter to a specialist security company in Nigeria to handle while working closely with the government.

"We left the matter in the hands of the experts who deal with these kind of matters," she said.

Armed oil rebels in Niger Delta released unharmed in September 2008 two South African workers taken hostage by sea pirates.

More than 500 people were kidnapped in the first six months of 2009, of whom 10 were killed, according to official statistics.

Most of those kidnapped were foreign oil workers. - Sapa-AFP

As far as WC is concerned. You guys do a nice job of scaring away potential tourists all on your own.

And beside the "right" tourist knows they're not targets.

Can you make the same bet that no African coming tothe world cup will be harrassed by locals, (don't think so)

My types are everywhere in my country, you cannot run away from us.And to be honest even the poor of the poorest will never ever attack anyone for nothing.
Burning someone with the tyre and puting it around their neck is a South African phenomenon,we call it a necklacing.During our struggle years apaartheid spies(blacks) where necklaced in public to send message to other spies and those who are thinking of becoming spies.
So aslong as you leave your arrogence in Warri nothing will happen to you.Your fate is in you hands Mister grin

Nigeria: More than 200 dead in religious violence
By AHMED SAKA and JON GAMBRELL (AP) – 1 hour ago

JOS, Nigeria — Rioters armed with machetes slaughtered more than 200 people including a 4-day-old infant, residents said, less than two months after sectarian violence in the volatile region left more than 300 dead.

The violence in three mostly Christian villages Sunday appeared to be reprisal attacks following the January unrest in Jos — when most of the victims were Muslims, said Red Cross spokesman Robin Waubo. State officials did not comment on the cause of the latest attacks.

Plateau State spokesman Gregory Yenlong said officials would conduct mass burials for the victims on Monday.

The bodies of the dead lined dusty streets in three villages south of the regional capital of Jos, local journalists and a civil rights group said Sunday. They said at least 200 bodies had been counted by Sunday afternoon.

The bodies of children tangled with each other in a local morgue, including a diaper-clad toddler. Another young victim appeared to have been scalped, while others had severed hands and feet. One woman victim in the morgue appeared to have been stripped below the waist, but later covered by a strip of black cloth.

Jos has been under a dusk-til-dawn curfew enforced by the military since January's religious-based violence. It was not clear how the attackers managed to elude the military curfew early Sunday.

Acting President Goodluck Jonathan said security agencies would be stationed along Plateau state's borders to keep outsiders from coming in with more weapons and fighters.

"(We will) undertake strategic initiatives to confront and defeat these roving bands of killers," he said in a statement. "While it is too early to state categorically what is responsible for this renewed wave of violence, we want to inform Nigerians that the security services are on top of the situation."

More than 600 people fled to a makeshift camp that still held victims from January's violence, said Red Cross official Adamu Abubakar. He expected more to come, putting an even bigger strain on the already limited humanitarian aid for those fleeing the violence.

The killings represent the latest religious violence in an area once known as Nigeria's top tourist destination, adding to the tally of thousands already killed in the last decade in the name of religious and political ambitions.

Rioting in September 2001 killed more than 1,000 people and Muslim-Christian battles killed up to 700 people in 2004. More than 300 residents died during a similar uprising in 2008.

Jos lies in Nigeria's "middle belt," where dozens of ethnic groups mingle in a band of fertile and hotly contested land separating the Muslim north from the predominantly Christian south.

In Jos, Muslims have complained about being denied jobs and other benefits by the Christian-dominated government. However, many Muslims also operate shops and businesses in a nearby town where the tourist trade has dried up and the surrounding tin mines have been abandoned, stoking fears for Christians about retaliation from Muslim neighbors.

In Dogo Nahawa, a village three miles (five kilometers) south of Jos, residents said the dead included a 4-day-old infant. Those who survived claimed their attackers shouted at them in Hausa and Fulani — two local languages used by Muslims.

Yenlong, the state government spokesman, also said police were seeking to arrest Saleh Bayari, the regional leader of the Fulanis, because Bayari's comments incited the attack. He offered no other details.

But the chairman of the local Fulani organization denied that his people were involved in the attack.

Nigerian military units began surrounding the affected villages Sunday afternoon, Waubo, the Red Cross spokesman, said. He said the agency did not know how many people may have died in the fighting but workers have been sent to local morgues and hospitals to check.

Associated Press Writers Bashir Adigun in Abuja, Nigeria and Jude Owuamanam in Dogo Nahawa, Nigeria, contributed to this report. Gambrell reported from Lagos, Nigeria.

I so wish people can see the light and realise that they are not their religion.God created people and people created religions. No one is created Muslim or Christians but human beings, children of God,God created himself in human flesh. We are all God,and killing someone else in the name of God is insane.

I pray for peace in Jos!God have mercy on all souls.

I am sorry my friend I do not live in your country. and don't need to hide that fact. I have been there a couple of times enough to know the local people and local politics but rest assured You would loose that bet if you made it.

Apart from the intricate policies of the SA government and how it affects African politics as a whole not much more interests me about SA.

What erks me the most is the inability of the most efficient democratic structure in Africa (i.e black majority) to manage several fundamental issues within the state and the gross psychological distance of the average SA in terms of solidarity with the continent.

I have come to understand through my journeys that SA blacks are the most different of African species compared to others. In fact they are almost a mirror image of their counterparts(African Americans) in terms of mindset. In all my travels I have interacted with many a people in Africa both on a business and local level and it is without doubt that this phenomena is very evident in your nation.

Through my journeys in trying to understand this psyche I have come to realize that there have been several factors leading to this mindset, much of which I don't really care to enumerate right now. What I have also come to reallize is that the black populous are generally "in denial of this status" and instead disguise their inadequacies in material gains while loosing their African essence as a whole.

Why do I care?, well lets just say others see the world of Africa in Micro cognitive terms while I see them in Macro contexts,

As for knowing about Julius Malema, well thats just a couple of clicks away on a mouse pad much like you do when it comes to information on Jos riots,

Malema is a boistrous orator who's only skills lie in the ability to rally people through inciting sentimentality and emotional reactions. The ANC leadership understands this well and he is being used as a mouth piece. Malema understands this well and knows he can appeal to the  the nature of the youth to gravitate towards these tendecies instead of being appealed to on their intellectual bases. Thats psychology 101. It is easier for you to insight a group of 20 something year olds to war that it is a group of 30 year olds.

Thats why the white minority are all over him. Ther is power in shaping the minds of the next generation of black SA's

To call that man intelligent is a gross mistatment. "Street smart" maybe, but intelligent, far from it.

The JOS Riots have widely reported here in SA. I first saw the story on News24 and then heard it over the Radio. If 200 people are killed, do you think the world would not know about it. I heard it over the Radia. I don't really know whats going on in day to day Nigeria. News that i get to know about them is when the local Radio or TV report about it. I don't have any source of news from Nigeria inside nigeria.

Why the interest Morpheus? You seem to know more than a person who live here in SA. Its like first thing you do in the morning is to watch on the news what shappening in SA.

If i may ask, do you have excess to E news on DSTV that side? if thats the case, 90% of their reporting is news from SA. I am just surprised about the interest. I guess there's lots of things in Nigeria to draw your attention.
I have never seen Malema on CNN or BBC.

I already told you the reason for the interest but you are not listening, let me break it down to you like ' a six year old"

If you had a bunch of investors who were trying to start up a business in your country and they needed a think tank group or organization to do the leg work in analyzing the country in and out who do you think they would come to?

A guy who has knowledge of the particular country.

A guy who sits down and gets all his info from  E news and so on or

A guy who has extreme knowledge of the continent itself  in terms of business, politics and social issues.

I'll leave the response to that question open ended,
