Can Abuja sustain the infracstructural growth without the oil wealth, answer is no. Take Government away from Abuja, then it becomes an empty shell. The moment nigeria divides, Abuja will only be remembered in history as an old glory . Lagos is able to begin the restoration of its infracstructure decay after it ceased to be a capital because it was able to generate income from taxes gotten from the private sector. Does Abuja has anything to offer the privte sector ?, the last time i checked, the answer is an obvious NO. A yoruba addage says "ile ti afi ito mo, iri ni yoo wo". A house built with saliva will be washed away by the morning dew. |

Why do you think that the Nigerian ruling elite are hanging on to Nigeria with every ounce of their lives? Do you think it is because they love the contraption called Nigeria or has hope of making or changing it for the better? It is because of what they have stole and built in Abuja they are worried about. Abuja belong to the northerners and they can do whatever they like with it. Just as the Westerner will inherit Lagos too built with the oil loot. But remember that brick and mortar last for a shot while, so give Abuja 30 years without oil from the old East it will crumble or remain as it is now. Where is the ancient Babylonian capital today? In ruins |

the previous responders are correct; abuja has no underlying economy. It barely generates anything internally. It was built on oil money. If Naijiria splits, it'll go to the north (of course), but they would have to borrow money to develop it further and maintain its infrastructure. May be the north can build abuja with loans from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar or Yemen |

Abuja will be abandoned. I will continue to live in Port Harcourt as a member of the Eastern Federation. With a home in Enugu as the provincial capital of the Eastern Federation. |

Lagos has done well before One Nigeria and will remain so after One Nigeria- If it should happen All those claiming Lagos was built with Oil money are uninformed and plain ignorant. Oil was discovered in the 1960's abuja was built in the 80- early 90's leaving a 20 year window of no real infrastructure under military government (6 coups). Westerners wont "inherit" anything as it has been around since the 1400-1500's and was always a booming city that attracted locals and foreigners. So if theres anything that makes Lagos a great city is the locals and migrants who built it, not any Oil Money. ABJ is a fake city with no history so it would fall . . . . |

Beaf: its quite alright because new money and investments are coming into lagos as we speak. What person would want to vacate in a region where militancy is like a day job? What Oil company wants to base their company in the ND where "borrowing" employees for ransom is a common practice? When I heard ND govs trying to make it mandatory for Oil companies to be based in the ND I busted out with laughter. lol really Besides Oil, gas, water, trees and MOSQUITOES what is there in the ND? o yea babes i wont lie |

sjeezy8: We Igbos can pacify the region. Then the oil companies will come back. We know how to deal with the militancy. |

Re: If Nigeria Collapses: What Happens To Abuja? by Eziachi: 3:35am On Mar 08, 2010 |
sjeezy8: How can you possibly say that? Where do you think that the money that built all these and so many others comes from? Obasanjo’s poultry farm? Third mainland bridge Festac Town Satellite Town Tin Can Island National theatre Iganmu National Stadium Surulere Federal offices Julius Berger Built road Did you actually see Lagos in the 50s and early 60s? Just like a northern politician said recently, “to succeed in Nigeria, when you see black, don’t call it black but white” That is exactly what you are doing by denying a bare fact that crude oil built modern Lagos. |

Abuja will go to the North. I think this is a no-brainer. |
