Rejected Nigeria's yam?? Are you kidding me?? Usa is one of the few country to attain self sufficiency and even have enough to feed half of Africa, how then do they now consider importing from a poor 3rd world country??

Nigeria's Minister of agriculture, Audu Ogbeh has said that the United States rejected yam exports from Nigeria because of their poor quality.

In June, Nigeria exported yams to China, United Kingdom and US as part of efforts to reduce dependence on oil and increase income from the agricultural sector.

The Minister vowed to investigate both the exporting company and officials of the ministry’s department of quarantine for allowing “such substandard good to leave the shores of the country”.

“Some consignment of yams were exported from Nigeria to the United States and according to reports we have today, they were found to be of poor quality,” he said.

“We will be investigating both the company that exported it and our quarantine department to check and find out why such a consignment left here.”

Ogbeh also said the price of rice will reduce substantially in the “next one month”.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Customs Service, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) were charged with the responsibility of ensuring that yams exported were properly checked and certified.

Others are Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC).

Agricultural Minister who could not go into farm to select the best yams for export is now blaming other people. That means he did not even know how the yams looks like when it was harvested.

Waste of tax payers money to pay Audu salaries.

This government has nothing to offer. Why export yams in the raw form? The yams should have been processed. We need agricultural experts to man that Ministry. This old man lacks ideas to man the Ministry of Agriculture.

I remember asking the sense in exporting yams then while the price of yam skyrocketed locally.

The implication is that all the yams sent to the US was a waste of efforts and resources while we are made to pay indirectly for those delusional lapse.

We need fire brand economy drivers. shocked
sit down and listen, lemme lecture you...
it is companies that exported those yams and as companies they'll wanna buy d least in price and sell to wherever on d earth at d highest of price. its only morals that'll let them sell to local marketsand they don't include it in their operations 'lest they do not make profit'

How many did you harvest?

Is the yam government owned or privately owned?

They could be various reasons like the use of so much fertiliser which probably exceeded the set limits. It's also possible that the yams were not probably stored and could have rots or pest on them. You need to understand that the US is a developed nation and they do not handle food the way it's done in Nigeria.

That's God dealing with you guys. We've not had enough to eat and you are rushing out to export.

You think every quality of product is exportable? It is so obvious our government doesn't know what an 'export quality' is.

When your yam spends 3 months in damp storage awaiting paperwork/undergoing bureaucracy for export, is it surprising it gets to it's destination spoilt?

Get your act together as a country and stop blaming others for your failings, Ghana exports yams, nobody rejects them.
