Do majority of youth today really abstain from sex? Should we advocate safe sex instead?

Safer sex (often called “safe sex”) means taking steps to protect yourself and your partner from STDs when you have sex.

Sexual abstinence is a choice to not take part in any genital contact. The choice of sexual abstinence is made by people for several reasons. Some people do it for spiritual reasons, others may choose to abstain from sex because of high moral standards.

In Africa, where having high moral standards is a source of pride and diginity, total abstinence from sex before marriage is seen by many as absolute necessity.
Furthermore, many people claim that abstinence is a comfortable way to stay clear of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and Aids among others. Therefore, many parents and leaders in the African society are fond of preaching total abstinence to young people

However, very few people actually pratice total abstinence in reality. Many of the youth go about having sexual intercourse with their friends and spouses before marriage. Some may even contact deadly sexual diseases that may require urgent attention, but may decline to disclose this in public for the fear of being victimized. As a result of this, a lot of the youth on the African continent die of sexualy transmitted diseases.

So, is it time to do away with our old mentality on sex in Africa? It is it time to preach safe sex rather than total abstinence ?
