Instead of us to make use of the steel and export the products. Crude oil all over again. Patiently waiting for the giant corruption cases that would trail this newly born sector.

The man is from India and they have been importing bicycles and things since before manufacturing steel

what are you saying?

I am saying it makes absolutely no sense to export recycled steels. Nigeria does not produce any steel, all we do is to recycle from the scraps. These scraps are the feedstock for all the rolling mills in the country when these scarps are depleted, the mills will shut down.

The more power we give these Indian companies to head vital sectors of our economy, Nigeria will never grow out of poverty. 1st it was oil and gas, now steel? Mark my words we are done for.

Better a Lebanese or even a Chinese company than an Indian company.

Re: Nigeria Enters League Of Steel Exporters by philoedu(m): 9:12am On Oct 20, 2017
Congratulation to Nigeria for that, but I think Nigeria must strive to be inward looking instead of always, of what goes on outside. The house must be put in order domestically or otherwise, if you like in every sector of the economy.

I think the competition is a healthy one even though the market may have been saturated but I belive we have come a long way. In this scenario now, u think of quality, after Nigeria cable wires are better than foreign counterpart
Deeldorado:
We came too late. The market for steel is already saturated. China has excess capacity in steel production, even US producers cannot compete. One of the biggest tragedies of the Nigerian story is the Ajaokuta steel complex, once labelled the biggest industrial project in SSA by the New York Times, with about $4 billion spent as at 1992. Yet, we mismanaged it and did not enter the export market when the time was ripe.

Ajaokuta would have been the basis of a linkage based industrialisation strategy for Nigeria but we messed it up. When top Japanese manufacturers like Kobe are running into scandals because they are finding it increasingly difficult to compete, that is when Nigeria wants to enter the export market. Futile attempt because you're late to the party. The best bet with our steel industry now is to focus supply on the domestic market. At least, it will save us some foreign exchange.

God bless you for this; the company is around Ogijo; was one of the first staff that started it.
They import billets and smelt scraps.
The Chairman (Mr Gupta) is using the coy to siphon money; he has other interest around Eleganza house Apapa.
Iam not too sure of the capacity to export.....I left the coy more than 14 years now
I work with Africa industries at agbara industrial estate.... They specialise in glass production, caustic soda, solid and liquid silicate and import steels into Nigeria to be exported to other countries

I used to work at Ogijo Mill. We did most of the layout; furnace etc.
Then once you resumed no official closing hour. Luckily I got a better job else where.
Conditions were poor then; coupled with facr that I travelled daily from Mainland; holdup then was limited to Owode and Mile 12

That's because we got it right with Cable wires on time, we didn't get steel right the time we should have. You see testimonies of people telling you these guys are basically importing scraps into Nigeria and exporting to other neighbouring countries - it's just pure commerce and there are no value chain benefits. If we got steel right at the right time, we would have built enough knowledge and capacity in its production to be supplying the top automakers in the World. Given that labour is cheap here too, it would have meant that our steel would not only have good quality but also competitive. But we bungled it. Again, we're coming when the party has ended.
