An AK47-wielding herdsman on duty. This is the new normal in cattle grazing

● Middle Belt youths gather in Jos to discuss issue

The Secretary-General of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria (GAFDAN), Alhaji Sale Bayeri, has warned that banning of open grazing in Plateau State will create more problems than it intends to resolve, noting that the Fulanis do not know any other method of grazing their cattle, “and any attempt to confine them to a place was a sure invitation to anarchy.”

His warning came on the heels of a protest meeting ofyouths from across the six states of the Middle Belt region yesterday at the Plateau State House of Assembly to deliberate with representatives of the executive and legislative arms of government on the way out of the incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen in the region.

President of Middle Belt Youth Council, Emma Zopmal, had revealed that the meeting was aimed at compelling governments of the six states in the region to ban open grazing in the entire region, adding that the recent gale of attacks across some local government areas of Plateau State, in which over 50 persons were killed was worrisome.
The states in the region are Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa and Niger.

But while the communique of the Middle Belt youths’ meeting was still being awaited, the Fulani have forewarned of the consequences of banning open grazing reserve, which they said will spell anarchy in Plateau.

While warning that banning of open grazing should not be contemplated in Plateau State, Bayeri posited that it would be tantamount to banning a people’s way of life.

He said: “Saying that you will ban open grazing on the Plateau is laughable because the average Fulani man does not know any other way of grazing his cows. This is a practice that started right from Adam, and for you to say you want to remove or curb it is an invitation to anarchy really.

“If you want to ban open grazing, you can equally ban open farming because the two agricultural activities go hand in hand and you can’t have one without the other. You can’t eat rice without meat for the soup or stew.”
Bayeri added: “Again, the resistance that will come with such measure is not what Plateau needs at this time. We are passing through turbulent times and we are trying to make peace. So, we should not put in place any measure that will make that peace unattainable.”

Meanwhile, the Plateau State House of Assembly has expressed support for the proposed anti-open grazing bill in the state.

Responding, the Majority Leader of the assembly, Hon. Henry Yenkwap and member representing Shendam constituency, expressed delight that young people are concerned about the security situation in the state, urging them to do a comprehensive petition to state their position clearly and submit same to the assembly.

The Deputy Speaker and member representing the Dengi Constituency, Sale Shehu Yipmong, expressed happiness over the unity and ideas being generated by the youths to address the security challenges in the state. He said the assembly was already thinking in the direction of the bill before the protest visit.

On his part, the Speaker of the assembly, Mr. Peter Azi, reassured that the House was not resting in its oars on the matter

He said the entire assembly was saddened by the unfortunate development and prayed for dialogue, adding that the assembly has visited some of the affected areas to get first hand assessment.
He called on Plateau people to keep political differences aside and face the issue, stressing that government was up and doing about it.

He maintained that the assembly has set up a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the massacre at the primary school in Miango.

On the proposal for an anti-open grazing bill for Plateau State, the Speaker challenged the coalition to propose issues that are expected to form parts of the bill, stressing that the bill should not be left to the assembly alone.

The nerve!

Just imagine the temerity!

Do they not know that obnoxious cultures and practises that impinge on the rights of citizens are contrary to equity, good conscience and public policy and must therefore be expunged? I don't blame the murderers sha, their grand patron is President and he's assured them that bloodshed and murder is their birthright to exercise freely, without let and with adequate federal support/protection.

The entire middle-belt should band together and collectively ban open grazing then train and arm their youths as vigilantes to enforce same since the federal security agencies have become fellow herdsmen and boko haram terrorists in uniform.

2. The governor or President must be an infidel
3. That citizen must be Hauaa/Fulani
4. That citizen must be a Moslem.

These guys are such clowns Adam from the Bible or koran was a herdmen? The guys occupation was tending the garden of eden I'm sure he could plant grass. Aside from religious nonsense these guys constantly make threats like this isn't half reason the state is regulating their activities.

Ranching is the future and will displace these herders soon enough. Taraba and Benue already have banned open grazing. More states will follow suit for tax incentive and to lesse conflicts. More power to these youth lobbying there representatives. It would be interesting to see if the get bills pushed in all the Middle belt states.

1. Hate speach
2. Terrorism

The middle belt youths went about addressing the ills plaguing their region legally and through constitutional means

The Fulanis rather have openly issued threats, in what the very same government have used to proscribe certain agitation as hate speach and terrorist act.

Indeed, a government of 97% vs 5%
Indeed, a government that belongs to somebody and is answerable to nobody

The Arewa youths issued same threats, no arrest
The Fulanis have now issued same threat, no arrest nor proscribed will happen

Indeed a government of the 97% vs 5%

They are Nigerians and they have the right to graze their cattles in any part of the federation. Banning them isn't the solution, we need to plead with them and create an enabling environment for their business to thrive. After all, we can't live a day without eating meat

What? So because they are Nigerians they can destroy other peoples farmland, kill mamain, rape aand commit all sort of crimes. Thier counterparts in East Africa have more cattles than them but they practice ranching. The fact is that, thier patron is in power therefore they are above the law.

Fulanis are not killers. The killers are cattle rustlers. Fulanis are peaceful people. I see a lot of them here in sokoto

We should plead with them despite all the atrocious activities they do?
What made u think we can't live a day without meat? Who ever telling your thick skull that is simply deceiving you,
With the fulani attitude and rampant killings I support the youth to move for the banning of open grazing.
We live in a modern age another method of feeding their cows and cattles should be employed.

Hypothetical scenario if they do manage to get middle belt states to ban open grazing that leaves only south and North. In Benue MACBAN opted to go to Niger, Nasarawa and Taraba (open grazing illegal). I think they will decide to move further south if they don't have choice.

The only x factor is how the southern lawmakers will react to influx of herds men if the decided come. Currently southern states haven't in a hurry to ban open grazing like Edo.

Why are some Nigerians not allowed to sell beer and other alcoholic drinks in some parts of the country?
The myopic people who are saying Nigeria cannot be restructured are basically postponing the day of reckoning.

Not only in Sokoto, they are peaceful in Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Gombe and so on but not in Kaduna, Plateau, Nassarawa, Kogi, South east and southwest. So how do we curb the menace of herds men in other parts of the country? For now ranching remains the best alternative.

These people though. I really don't blame some states from banning them outrightly. It has gotten to a point where if i see these people with their cattle, i have these fear of been attacked.

Commercial ranching will even help the cattle business as people are talking of boycotting cattle and shifting 100% to fish and mushrooms which taste very much like meat.

The reason you gave above clearly shows you have not been sleeping well.

Why are some businesses like prostitution, hotels etc banned in the North? Those who go into them, are they not Nigerians? What did you say again, we should plead with them after taking so many human lives? You should be saying that at this point, they shoot herdsmen on sight.....

I can see that the Plateau State House of Assembly is too scared to attend to this bill.

Open grazing has been a source of anarchy especially since this idíot became president. If the herdsmen cannot adopt land tenure systems like other farmers then they should leave. If they decide to turn it to anarchy then Insha'Allah they will be met fire for fire. Nobody has a monopoly over violence, we shall protect ourselves over these marauders from futah jalon even with their military cohorts cool

These blood thirsty mammals now give instructions to the govt of the day just because they have a tribal bigot as president who protects their deeds and congratulates them when human lives are taken.
Even in this modern age these Fulani illiterates and their leaders who have rejected western education and failed to learn cannot fashion out a way to go about their cow rearing business without invading people's land maiming and killing. And you tell me this people are humans. No
