New South African aircraft project launched by Dene

South African aerospace companies Denel Aerostructures (DAe) and Denel Aviation, both part of the State-owned Denel
Group, have unveiled a major new project at the Africa Aerospace and Defence 2014 show on Thursday – the South African
Regional Aircraft (SARA). This is aimed at meeting a gap in the global market, preserving South Africa's aerospace design and
development capabilities, while also stimulating the country's young aerospace engineers and technicians.

"We know how much the development costs will be," DAe CEO Ismail Dockrat said at the media conference, at Air Force Base
Waterkloof, just south of Pretoria. "We have done a first round of market feasibility studies. The next step is a detailed
feasibility study."

The project is currently in its pre-development phase. The companies hope to complete the detailed feasibility study and win
wider support from government departments and agencies, the private sector, potential partners, investors and customers
within the next 18 months. Then the development phase would be started.

The development phase would probably last five years. The result would be a prototype aircraft by 2020 or 2021.

"It's a Denel initiative, but it's not going to be a Denel [only] project," he highlighted. The group will be actively seeking
support from other players in government and industry, as well as research institutions, to support or participate in the project.
Consultative discussions have already been started. "We obviously also need a launch customer, to order enough aircraft to
support its development."

The considerations which led to the idea of the SARA project began some two years ago. The intent was to develop a follow-
up to the technically highly-successful Rooivalk attack helicopter project, to sustain and further advance the expertise
developed in that programme.

"But we also said to ourselves: what are the needs of South Africa into the future?" explained Dockrat. "Should we develop a
military aircraft or alternatively should we develop a civil aircraft?"

The decision was to develop a civil aircraft. This would be able to contribute to the improvement of the transport infrastructure
and enhance regional mobility in Southern Africa and Africa in general, as well as meet market needs in parts of Asia and Latin
America. Research indicated that there was a gap in the global market for an aircraft carrying about 24 passengers.

Currently, three versions of the SARA are planned. An airliner version would carry 24 passengers. A combi version would be
able to carry 12 passengers and one LD2 cargo pallet. A freight version would be able to transport three LD2 pallets.

The SARA would have a payload of 8 400 kg, a range of 1 500 nautical miles and be pressurised, so it could fly high and
above the weather. It will be certified to undertake scheduled airline operations. Should any military force show interest in the
design (now or during the development phase) it would be possible to incorporate their requirements into the design.

Denel Aviation launches major training project

South African company Denel Aviation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with one of the world's top simulation
and training companies, Canada's CAE, and its local partner, Elisa, on Thursday, at the African Aerospace and Defence
exhibition at Air Force Base Waterkloof, just south of Pretoria. The aim of the MoU is to establish a National Training and
Simulator Centre (NTSC).

The planned NTSC will be located at the Denel Training Academy, which falls under Denel Aviation. It is scheduled to be fully
operational by 2020, although it is likely to be functional somewhat earlier, in 2018 or 2019. It will include a six-axis full flight
simulator, other flying training devices with lesser degrees of fidelity and a number of technical training systems.

"We are delighted to join forces with CAE, which is a global leader in training and simulation," affirmed Denel Aviation
executive manager for business development Hugh Petersen to the media. "We're absolutely delighted with the confidence
Denel has shown in choosing CAE as its partner.

"It [the NTSC] will be a full training suite, not just [flying] training but also mission training," CAE VP and GM Europe Ian Bell
told Engineering News Online. "It will be a Centre of Excellence for the whole African continent."

The launch customers for the new centre will be the South Africa Air Force and regional airline South African Express. But it is
aimed at serving not only the wider South African aviation industry but also the wider African aviation industry.

Not all nations can trust their government to look after them in foreign lands. People know who they are.

Good work by the teams and officials in Nigeria.

undecided

South African assessment team which travelled to the West African country on Wednesday said the 10 bodies were identified through reference to identity documents found in their possession.
The families of the deceased had been notified and social workers had been deployed to assist them, government said.
Officials were maintaining contact with relatives of those who were visiting the church and had asked them to send photographs of their relatives which could be used for identification purposes.
“Since the appeal made yesterday [on Wednesday] for family members to send photographs of their affected loved ones to the operations centre at dirco, we have received an overwhelmingly positive response and we appreciate this gesture of cooperation,” government said in a statement.
“We have forwarded the pictures to the South African consulate in Nigeria and the team on the ground in Lagos is making use of the pictures in the process of identifying those of our fallen compatriots who can still be identified through the use of photographs.
“We understand that some of the bodies may take a while to be positively identified due to the nature and extent of the calamity.”
A guest house belonging to the church, led by Prophet TB Joshua, collapsed and was reduced to rubble on Friday.
The assessment team has established that 349 South Africans were in Lagos on matters connected to the church when the disaster occurred.
“Of these, 265 were found alive. Out of the 84 that are unaccounted for, the figure of our compatriots that perished, as received from our mission, stands at 67,” government said in a statement.
Some of the survivors of the incident had arrived back in South Africa.
The assessment team was making arrangements for the treatment and return of those who were injured in the disaster.
“The team will also work with authorities on the process of the repatriation of the mortal remains of deceased South Africans,” said government, adding that it would ensure that all the country’s citizens were accounted for.
“The SA high commissioner and the consul-general have been working with the leadership of the church and other authorities, visiting the scene, going to hospitals and mortuaries in an effort to provide assistance to all our affected citizens,” said government.
A 24-hour operations centre had also set up at the department of international relations and cooperation to relay information from Nigeria to the families as well as to receive information from the families and to share such information with the team on the ground in Lagos.

South African court okays seizure of Nigeria’s $9.3m
Posted by: Onyedi Ojaibor, Abuja in Featured, News 5 hours ago

South Africa has seized the $9.3 million Nigerian cash flown abroad a private jet into its capital, Johannesburg, from Abuja early this month.
Two Nigerians and an Israeli were travelling with the plane’s crew at the time the cash, which was not declared, was found on the plane.
South African security and Nigeria have launched an investigation into what transpired.
The explanation from Nigeria that the money was meant for arms purchase for the Nigeria intelligence agencies, has been rejected by South Africa’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) and the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa (NPA).
The NPA, in a statement, according to online publication Premium Times, said the manner in which the money was brought into the country breached the laws that deal with the transfer of foreign exchange of such proportion. “The money was initially detained by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) as it was not disclosed or declared at customs, and was above the prescribed legal limit for the amount of cash that may be brought into the country,” it said in a statement.
The NPA, according to the medium, said its investigation showed that Tier One Services Group, the firm the Nigerian government claimed it wanted to procure the arms from, is not authorised to sell or rent military hardware.
“In court papers, the NPA submitted evidence that Tier One is not registered with the National Conventional Arms Control Committee and is thus not authorised to enter into any agreements regarding the sale and/or rental of military equipment,” the statement read.
Tier One has apparently issued an invoice to a Cyprus based company, ESD International Group Ltd, ESD, in respect of the procurement of armaments and helicopters to be delivered to Nigeria.
However, South African investigators said the time when the invoice was prepared and the time the money was brought in threw up some serious issues of its true intent.
The money was ferried to South Africa less than a week from the date the invoice was prepared (September 8, 2014). The involvement of a Cyprus based company also heightens the suspicion that this may be a case of classical money laundering. Cyprus is known for its secretive banking system.
The NPA added that the transaction did not follow normal procedure in the procurement of the kind of equipment it was alleged to have been meant for.
The Senate yesterday summoned National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh and Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah over the smuggled $9.3 million cash.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Senator George Sekibo, said those invited to appear before his committee on Tuesday would brief members on the incident.
He said: “ I don’t want to pre-empt issues because I have not heard details about the issue but they will be here on Tuesday.”
On the soldiers sentenced to death, Sekibo said he was not surprised that death sentence was passed on the 12 soldiers because before they joined military, they were aware of the implication of being involved in mutiny.
He added that before the judgment was passed, the army must have carried out their investigation on the matter.

The word "organise" is good enough for me. Rescue experts can do nothing else but rescue. Treatment experts can do nothing but ensure that south africans receive treatment. Body identification experts can do nothing else but. Home affairs officials can do nothing but be home affairs officials.

Our team comprises all four. It is what it is.

I love the word "organise". I see serious organisation here. Contrast that with...never mind...

Senate Summons Military Chiefs Over Seized $9.3m, NSA

By admin on 19/09/2014

Following the seizure of Nigeria’s $9.3 million cash by the South African authorities on Monday, the Senate has asked military and the security outfits to brief its committees on the matter.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence and Army, George Sekibo disclosed this in a chat with journalists on Thursday.

Those he said expected to brief the lawmakers on Tuesday are the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, Chief of Army Staff, Kenneth Minimah and the National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki.

The Federal Government had admitted on Tuesday that it owned the money, which was meant for arms transaction and conveyed in a private aircraft belonging to the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Ayo Oritsejafor.

Two Nigerians and an Israeli who were in possession of the money, which has since been frozen, were also arrested.

Mr. Sekibo said the military chiefs and the NSA would tell the committee what exactly happened.

I have just called the Chief of Defence Staff, National Security Adviser and Chief of Army Staff.

I don’t want to pre-empt issues because we have not heard details about it, but they will be here on Tuesday next week,” he said.

That reason is: Suppression.

Suppression is the foundation of all small unit tactics since... well WW2
