South African Air Force retire some ofits current Gripen or Hawk jet aircraft.

A weakeningRand, and a 10% defense budget cut may see the South African Air Force retire some of its current Gripen or Hawk jet aircraft . The defense cut coupled with the decrease in currency value has come as a double blow; affectingreplacement parts for military jets as they are paid in either dollars, or in the case of the British built Hawks, in pound sterling. SAAF efforts to cut down on costs have seen five Hawk jets scrapped for parts, three of which were grounded after accidents. Furthermore, of the 24 Hawks initially acquired, there are only seven qualified pilots, while of the 26 Gripens in use (half of which are in storage), there are only five qualified pilots to operate the aircraft.

Lol they will soon run away. This is yesterday's news not just 2016.

Only 5 gripen pilots and 7 hawk pilots. Wonderful.

5 hawks have been scrapped for parts.

And half of the gripen jets are in storage.

Early this year I said 6 gripen pilots were left when we heard the news that 3 of the 9 qualified pilots left but it seem more will be leaving this year. Before the end of this year only 2 gripes pilots will be left.

You do realize this article is a bucket of horse sh11t right?? It's written by some women from netwerk24 with absolutely 0 knowledge of anything even remotely related to the defence sector!!

The article is so full of errors it boggles my mind how any professional news outlet would publish this rubbish.

Firstly there is no evidence of any Hawk fighters being scrapped......none what so ever.

secondly SAAF confirmed we have over 50 qualified hawk pilots in 2015....there's no possible way we lost 40 pilots with in a year.

thirdly SAAF confirmed there are NO Gripen in storage.

Also if we have only 5 Gripen pilots, how did we manage a seven ship flypast just a few months ago? refer to pic.

Lastly we don't have a 35sqd combat flying school, as refer to by the author, unless our fighter pilots are now doing combat flight training on Dakotas??

Bring out sources to back your point. This is yesterday's news. The article was written by someone with in-depth knowledge of your military.

You never had 50 hawk pilot in the history of SAAF both retired and current pilots put together.

Is not today we've being hearing that half of your gripens are in storage.

And it's not yesterday that we have being hearing of 9 qualified pilots of which 3 retired recently and it seem another is gone.

The Article was written by Erika Gibson, if she had even a shred of knowledge about our air force she would've known we don't have a 35sqd combat flying school....35sqd is a maritime patrol sqd.

SAAF Gripens are in rotation, not storage http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=31821:saaf-says-gripens-being-rotated-not-stored&catid=111:sa-defence&Itemid=242

Same source: 18 Gripen aircrew have been trained up to operational status to date and 52 Hawk aircrew have been trained so far.

Lastly can you explain why NAF only has 7 operational platforms in your entire air force?? http://thenewsnigeria.com.ng/2016/03/bandit-party-of-nigeria-a-tearful-chronicle-of-larceny/

Towards stepping up its fight against crude oil theft, sea piracy and other maritime crimes, the Nigerian
Navy has procured and launched 25 locally made security patrol boats. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice
Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas said on Thursday in Port Harcourt that the boats which are less expensive than
imported ones, boast the necessary features suitable for military operations.
According to the Chief of Naval Staff, the cost of production of a unit of the boats is less than half the
cost of producing similar boats from overseas. The Nigerian Navy decided to look inwards by contracting
local ship building vendors for the provision of some of her defence articles due to the current serious
economic downturn, and the decision has helped in conserving foreign exchange.
The indigenous manufacturers of the boats have also been given the opportunity to prove themselves
while garnering experience in the process. Vice Admiral Ibas says the boats would help the Navy to
effectively monitor the creeks and further protect the maritime space, and consequently those doing
legitimate business from harassment by criminal elements.
The boats are 8.2 metres in length, with speed of about 40 knots. Each of the boats also has two gun
mounts, a radar system that can detect shallow waters and two 250 horsepower outboard engines. Apart
from having 16 to 18 hours of endurance to their credit, the boats are also fitted with outboard engines
and life rafts.
Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State governor has also pledged that the state is ready to support the Nigerian
Navy in its efforts at combating criminal activities in the maritime space. ‘’We will partner with the
security agencies and will not relent in ensuring that we provide all the necessary logistics for the patrol
boats,” Wike assured the Naval Chief. The governor has demanded for a list of the Navy’s requests to
underline the state’s commitment.
In the next two months, the Navy is expected to take delivery of 50 more security patrol boats with more
improved features and anti-ballistic protection, towards ensuring that the nation’s waters are saturated
with patrol boats for improved security.

.....On the current administration’s efforts to ensure that Nigeria’s maritime borders are secure
Well, what the current administration is doing is to improve upon our surveillance systems. The regional
maritime awareness visibility headquarters is here in Lagos but the satellite stations are along the coasts,
and we have increased them to about nine, and we employ radars that have ranges of 25 to 35 multiple
miles, which means our territorial waters are adequately covered by surveillance systems. The challenge
would be the funding, but the good news is that the Nigerian Navy has a project that is being funded by
the office of the National Security Adviser.
Through this project, we employ the use of high frequency to transmit over the horizon. Once that project
is completed, we should be able to see beyond 200 multiples miles. The Navy also has special forces that
are on maritime fields. These forces carry out specific missions but because of the nature of those
missions, we deliberately do not reveal the identity of the personnel involved and the mission they are
engaged in. So the activities of these forces are highly unsung but they are contributing enormously to the
operations in the North-east.....

Nigeria to buy attack helicopters from South Africa, others – Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, yesterday disclosed that the Nigerian army might soon procure the South Africa (SA) made Rooivalk attack helicopters or any other deemed okay for the full take off of the newly introduced Army Aviation Corps.
General Buratai said this yesterday at the opening of the COAS First Quarter Conference 2016 that held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers Mess, Abuja.
The army chief, while reviewing the progress made under his command, especially since the last COAS Quarterly Conference, said the introduction of the NAAC was amongst the numerous innovations recently introduced to make the army a more professionally responsive body.
On the procurement of befitting helicopters to enable the full takeoff of the NAAC project, the COAS said the army had compiled a list of platforms from Russia, America and Chinese origins which include their simulator and UAVs. He however noted that emphasis was made on Russian-made Mi-17 due to its “ruggedness, operability and multi-role capability.”
“Different contractors submitted their proposals for supply which are still being considered. Recently the NA also considered the South Africa (SA) made Rooivalk attack helicopters after witnessing a demonstration in SA on the capability and employability”.
According to him the take off of the NAA is one project that is very dear to him.
“One project that is dear to me is the takeoff of the Nigeria Army Aviation”, Buratai said. ...

We aren't buying their poorly armed Helicopter. At $40 million a piece, nobody would buy it. $40 million is even 2002 price, the Helicopter is probably $50 million at the moment.

The Price wont be $40 mil mate....The price you're quoting includes all the R& D that went into developing the Rooivalk. If Denel reopens the production line the price per unit im guessing would be around $20-$30 mil.

I dont think anybidy will be buying the half-french... not with that $40 million/piece price tag.

we all know Nigeria's platform acquisition pattern, if its too costly leave it or just buy 2 and keep the money.

I have a feeling more mi-17s are coming our way or even more mi-35 and since we are now close pals with the u.s.a. then we might actually see AH-1s before xmas.

but the rooivalk is a dream.. nobody is buying those even south africanas

Jesus

Do you boys need a crash course in FIN MAN 101?

$40 includes R&grin as well as a production run of only 12

Hence why the Rooivalk 2.0 is slated at being viable with a minimum order of 40-70

Same thing with the F35, its crazy expensive now... but when the production run ends it will be the cheapest American jet fighter ever made.

I have a feeling more mi-17s are coming our way or even more mi-35 and since we are now close pals with the u.s.a. then we might actually see AH-1s before xmas.

but the rooivalk is a dream.. nobody is buying those even south africanas

AH-1s ahahahah you have lost your damn mind!

Rooivalk costs are inflated because of the limited production run. Simple as that.

And fyi, the Rooivalk has come very close to being sold in the past - if it werent for the French Arms Embargo with Turkey or the Asian financial crises it would have been sold allready
