Johannesburg - Limpopo has outdone itself by not only producing the best overall pupil countrywide in last year’s matric results, but three top pupils in both maths and physical science come from the province.

Star achiever Mmadikgetho Komane, 18, has been acknowledged by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga as South Africa’s number one with 1 730 marks.

The 18-year-old from Glen Cowie Secondary School in the rural Sekhukhune district obtained 100 percent in maths, physical science and accounting.

She passed the other four subjects with distinctions.

The teenager, who will pursue actuarial science studies at Wits University, said the reality that she is the top pupil nationwide had not yet sunk in.

“I knew I would probably do very well but I didn’t expect to be the national top learner,” she said.

Mmadikgetho ascribed her performance to her teachers and parents, who she said were educationally oriented. Her father is a sales executive at an insurance company and her mother a school principal.

“Hard work does pay. I dedicated 90 percent of my time to my books,” she said.

Coming second in a province that was dogged by the textbook saga was Kamogelo Mamashela of Pax High School, who scored 1 721 marks. Trailing behind him in the third position was Annie Thomas, from Capricorn High School, with 1 704 marks.

Limpopo improved passes in both maths and physical science by 7.9 and 7.8 percentage points respectively, with five pupils, excluding Mmadikgetho, scoring 100 percent in both maths and science, while four others scored 100 percent in physical science.

Performance in accounting has also risen, by 4.9 percentage points.

Limpopo’s overall performance has increased to 66.9 percent, from 63.9 percent the previous year.

Education MEC Dickson Masemola was upbeat about the constant improvement.

“Let me remind you that when I joined this department in 2009, we obtained a 48.9 percent pass rate. In 2010 we obtained an overall 57.9 percent pass rate, while in 2011 we obtained 63.9 percent,” he said.

Mbilwi Secondary School, which remains the best school in the province, produced 325 university exemptions.

Twenty-one schools with fewer than 50 candidates achieved a 100 percent pass rate. But Alapha Secondary School in the Capricorn district, which includes Polokwane, got a zero percent pass rate. [/b]

Middelburg - Mpumalanga's top matric pupil has been given a brand new car for his efforts.

Calvin Mawere, 17, of Bushbuckridge High School, who is also ranked among the top 10 achievers nationwide, got distinctions for all eight of his subjects.

"I am overwhelmed and can't think straight at the moment," he said on Thursday after receiving the keys to a Toyota Etios 1.5 XI from Toyota's national sales manager, Kenneth Braye.

"I really can't believe I have won a car. I feel like I am dreaming and this will probably take some time to sink in."

He will only legally be able to drive it after June when he turns 18, however. Besides the car, Calvin also received a fridge, microwave, two laptops, an iPad, smartphone, tablet computer, a travel bag and a Russel Hobbs clothing iron, amongst others.

He said failing Grade 12 was not an option for him because his parents were by his side throughout his days of preparing for the exams.

His father, Effet Mawere, was also his Physical Science teacher at school.

"So it would have been ... disappointing for me to fail his subject. My mother also studies accounting through correspondence with the University of South Africa, so she helped me a lot through my studies," he said.

Calvin received eight distinctions for Sepedi, Accounting, Physical Science, Agricultural Science, Life Orientation, English, Life Sciences and Mathematics.

He plans to study medicine at Wits University this year.

"I have already been offered and promised a number of bursaries by a number of companies, but I will decide which one to take after consulting my parents," he said.

Other pupils who made it through to Mpumalanga's Top 10 Matrics include Michelle Janse van Rensburg from Hoerskool Ermelo; Vicky Tressal and Johan Erasmus from Hoer Tegniese Skool Middelburg; Eric Moloko from Mphanama Secondary School in Mhluzi, Middelburg; Siyabonga Ntuli from Allendale Secondary School; Hendrik Botha from Hoerskool Piet Retief; Edward Engelbrecht from Hoerskool Secunda; Frans Sipho from Hlabangamehlo Secondary School and Wandile Manana from Amadlelo-aluhlaza Secondary School.

The Top Ten Matrics received bursaries from different companies and institutions. They also received laptops, travelling bags and cell phones, amongst others. - SAnews.gov.za

Nigeria's economic growth is expected to decline by 0.2 per cent from the projected 7.2 per cent expansion to 6 per cent by 2014, the International Monetary Fund has said.

According to the Fund in its economic outlook report, Sub-Saharan Africa's economy will expand faster than previous forecast next year as the global economic recovery strengthens.

The region's economy will grow 6.1 per cent in 2014, more than the previous estimate of 5.7 per cent and the 5.6 per cent projected growth for this year, the Washington-based IMF said in its World Economic Outlook released yesterday. The global economy will expand 4 per cent next year, up from 3.3 per cent in 2013, the report said.

"A main driver of growth in 2014 will be the strengthening of activity in South Africa and other middle-income countries, predicated on improvements in the external environment," according to the report.

"Similarly, some low-income and fragile countries are expected to do better, including those currently experiencing internal conflict."

Export demand is set to improve as Europe emerges from a recession and growth in China fuels demand for commodities such as copper, iron ore and oil from sub-Saharan Africa.

Inflation will probably slow to an average of 6.3 per cent in 2014 from an estimated 7.2 per cent this year and 10 per cent in 2011 as central banks in East Africa raised borrowing costs to curb price increases, food prices fell and output increased, the IMF said.

"The success in reducing inflation has provided room for a gradual easing of the monetary policy stance in several countries," the IMF said.

The economies of Ivory Coast, the world's largest producer of cocoa, and Mozambique, the site of the world's biggest gas discovery in the past decade, will both expand 8 per cent next year, the fastest pace in the region, according to the report. '

Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer, will expand 6 per cent in 2014, down from an estimated 7.2 per cent this year, the IMF said. Growth in South Africa, the continent's largest economy, will probably accelerate to 3.3 per cent from 2.8 per cent this year as mining production rebounds, it said.
