The lifeless bodies of 26 Nigerian women, most of them teenagers, were recovered from the mediterranean sea.

The deceased women, believed to be Nigerians, were recovered by the Spanish warship Cantabria as part of operation Sophia, an EU anti-trafficking force.

The Nigerians are suspected to have been sexually abused and murdered at the sea.

The women's bodies are being kept in a refrigerated section of the warship. Most of them were aged 14-18.

According to La Repubblica, most of the 375 survivors brought to Salerno were sub-Saharan Africans, from Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, The Gambia and Sudan: 90 of them women, eight of them pregnant; and 54, children.

Italian prosecutors have begun an investigation into the deaths of the women, said to be mostly teenagers.
