Four illegal miners have been killed following the collapse of a mining site in Kogo Kadage village in the Yadagungume area of Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night when the miners were digging lead and trying to excavate it.

The source who didn’t want to be mentioned, disclosed that people have been there for over one month mining and excavating lead, one of the mineral resources common in the area, when suddenly one of the holes they dug collapsed on them and buried them underneath.

According to him, the four miners died instantly after they were removed from the collapsed site.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ningi LGA, Ibrahim Zubairu, described the incident as sad and tragic, noting that four people were trapped in the pit while three died instantly.

He said that the illegal mining site is located in the Kogo Kadage forest, seven kilometres away from Yadagungume town.

“Yesterday (Saturday), I was informed that four people were trapped in a mining pit, I directed that they should be rescued. Later on, they reported back to me that they recovered three bodies.”

“I don’t know about the illegal activities of the locals because we have banned all sorts of illegal mining in the entire local government area, it came to me as a surprise when I got the report of the incidence,” he said.

The chairman, however, said that he has constituted a committee tasked with the responsibilities of checkmating the illegal mining activities and land-related matters and also directed the Burra Divisional Police Officer to investigate the illegal mining sites.

Zubairu warned people to desist from illegal mining activities as the government would not spare anyone caught wanting.

The caretaker chairman condoled the family members of the deceased.

The PUNCH reported that on April 27, 2023, the member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Musa Nakwada, while speaking under matters of urgent public importance during plenary, said two women were killed after a mining pit collapsed on them at Bar Kudu in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Nakwada who represents Bogoro Constituency said that three other women sustained various degrees of injuries and fractures but did not give further details on the incident.

The tragic loss of lives due to an illegal activities on a mining site serves as a stark reminder of the desperate moves some individuals make in search of livelihood by all means possible. It underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address both economic disparity and environmental responsibility, aiming to prevent such heartrending incidents from being repeated in the future.

Illegal yet you were informed and you directed they should be rescued. In the south and Niger Delta mineral resources belong to Federal Govt but up North they're called illegal mining.
Meanwhile Northern Governors are aware of these activities. North and insincerity in Nigeria no start today.

Why are they mining without legal process, something that would put their lives in jeopardy? angry sad shocked embarassed undecided If government knows that there's economical advantage to the lead, then make it legal with a due process that is not hectic so people can make a living out of it.

men are dying just because they want to provide for their families. i think ladies need to support their husband to ease the pressure. Because if he gets desperate and loose his life in the process they'll suffer the after effect. Its better they both struggle together and ease tension on one party.

Massive illegal mining going on in the North. I wonder why this seems like a new discovery. The North is rich in gold and other natural gemstones and minerals. The illegal mining has been going on for years and the government has turn a blind eye to it.

This is a rich country but it seems different laws apply to different regions.

RIP to those who died sha.

Well said, but what can one do when an average Naija chick is just looking for who to scam into marriage so they can become 'career resident housewife-cum-manager' whist contributing zilch financially?

I have done a documentary for ILO on Mining. It's better to chase them out of the village than stop them from this "illegal " Mining. They have been through generations of this practice. Its the only thing they know. They don't farm, hardly go to school, not interested in hand works. Stopping them as Nigeria is now is breeding another terrorist or militant group. Nigeria is not yet there to significantly help with illegal Mining. The truth is we are not there yet. Nigeria is far from achieving what you are suggesting. The effect of this illegal Mining is vast. From environmental hazards to human hazards, worst affected are children who will later have retard development as a result of these activities. They will also pass the same condition to the next generation. Nigerian government doesn't have the capacity to cover Mining sites even in fee states.

We are living in a divided country.

The northern political leaders want their people to mine the resources in the north and use it for themselves.

But they want the southern part of Nigeria to continue to be the providing of all the revenue for running the Nigeria project.

The north prefer oil money from the Niger delta region than facing Agriculture or exploring the mineral resources in their regions.

They push the minerals to their own locals and NGOs to mine.

It is the southern people the northerners are cheating.
