Buruji Kashamu

Ramon Oladimeji

The senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Buruji Kashamu, has described the tenure of the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, as “a disaster and the worst nightmare for our party.”

The senator spoke against the backfrop of the dismal performance of the PDP in the Anambra State governorship election held on Saturday, which was won by the All Progressive Grand Alliance’s candidate, Willie Obiano.

In a statement he issued on Sunday after the PDP came third behind Obiano and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Kashamu said, “it is clear that Makarfi and his allies have brought ill-luck to the PDP.”

He added, “Makarfi and his team came as if they were the saviour that the PDP was waiting for but they have turned out to be the ones who are killing the party with their illegality, impunity and self-centredness. They believe they can do anything and get away with it. They did it in Anambra where all the popular aspirants were disenfranchised and the ticket was sold against democratic norms. Today, the party is worse off for the dastardly act of these interim caretakers.

“It was bad enough that the interim National Secretary, Senator Ben Obi, lost his ward; that the constituents were rejoicing over his disgraceful loss is indicative of outright communal irrelevance. This calls for concern from our national leaders that specialise in unreasonable harmonisation and imposition of unpopular candidates over the popular ones.”

Speaking on the activities leading to the National Convention of the party, Kashamu said it was regrettable that “Makarfi is surprisingly betraying his constituency, the North, and reducing the PDP to a southern or regional party because of his presidential agenda. But, I know that the average northerner is politically conscious, sagacious and dynamic.

“Thus, logic is likely to prevail over the thinking that elections at the national convention shall be a bazaar for the highest bidder, irrespective of the likely hazard to the existence of the party. This will discourage the misappropriation of state funds for unworthy political misadventures.”

He said at the rate Makarfi and his people were going, “anyone who wants to become anything in the PDP would have to first go and pay obeisance to a demi-god in Rivers State and his orchestra special assistant from Afao-Ekiti, Ekiti State.”

This bloated man should go and say that in Britain or the USA.
Useless drug baron who helped his fellow drug delear criminal, JagaBandit and Ebola Owu vote Jonathan out and bring bad luck bubu upon us.

MKO4ever:
Following the house arrest of senator-elect from Ogun State, Buruji Kashamu, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the United States Department of Justice has said it is “fully ready to assist” Nigeria with proper documentation on his extradition and express trial before a US District Judge in Chicago, Judge Charles Richard Norgle.

The NDLEA had, through its Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Ofoyeju Mitchell, disclosed that the agency’s men invaded Kashamu’s residence in Lekki, Lagos State last Saturday in response to the extradition request formally made to the Nigerian government by its American counterpart.

However, in a brief chat with LEADERSHIP yesterday, the trial judge, Norgle, said the Justice Department is “fully ready to ensure that an express hearing is given” to the case once Kashamu is brought before him to face the charge.

Apart from using the name of his younger brother, Adewale Kashamu – who the accused had claimed is dead – to obtain a Nigerian passport with registration number A870428 to transport drugs from Nigeria and the Federal Republic of Benin into the United States of America for several years up till 1994, Norgle said Kashamu, the leader of the drug cartel which had its base in Chicago, Illinois, had also used pseudo names like ‘Alhaji, Kasmal and Daddy’ for the illicit deals. The international passport was issued on April 20, 1990 in Abuja and it expired on April 19, 1995.

Other members of the drug cartel who are presently observing jail terms in different US prisons are Emmanuel Ugbade, Toun (surname not ascertained), Nicolas Fillmore, Cleary Wolters, Ellen Wolters, Oumiou Samadou, Gbenga Giwa and Akim Shokunbi.

Further investigations by LEADERSHIP revealed that the US Department of Justice had, penultimate Monday, made a formal request to the Nigerian government to “expressly and legally extradite Price Buruji” to America to face criminal charges.

The investigation also discovered video proofs which the United States legal department is willing to tender before Norgle as parts of the body of evidences showing that the accused had been going in and out of America to conduct drug-related business, contrary to his claims that he had “never stepped feet” on the soil of the country.

Kashamu was arrested in Britain in 1998 and held for five years before he was unconditionally released in 2003 by the Royal Court of Justice in England presided over by Lord Justice Pill and Mr. Justice Bell. The judges said that they were releasing the accused person who, upon his arrest, had over £350,000 in his possession, because the US Justice Department could not substantiate its claims that he (Kashamu) was the most wanted Alhaji Adewale Kashamu who was allegedly mentioned by others arrested as their principal conspirator.

He was arrested upon his arrival at the Heathrow International Airport with a Nigerian passport bearing Buruji Kashamu, but the UK judges dismissed it as a case of mistaken identity, stressing that the Chicago prosecutors had also tainted their eyewitness identification evidence by failing to disclose that one Nicolas Fillmore, one of the co-defendants, failed to pick him (Buruji) out of a photo line-up.

kay29000:
To those that don't know who Pablo Escosbar was, he was a Colombian drug lord from the 80s and 90s that became almost bigger than the Colombian government, till he was killed in 1993. And who is Kashamu Baruji? He is a newly elected Ogun State Senator who the NDLEA have been trying to Extradite to the U.S for some days now, to answer a drug related case. Well, that is the little people know about this man. But he goes by another name...or maybe more one. Back in the early 90s, he headed a drug cartel that dealt in millions of dollars of cocaine, and went by the alias, Alhaji, or Prince.

He has been on the run for more than 15 years now, and his unanswered drug case got blown up again when the TV Series, Orange is the New Black became popular a few years ago. I know you are wondering the correlation between the TV Series and Kashamu. Well, the series is actually based on the memoirs of Piper Kerman; an American woman who worked for Kashamu in the 90s. She wrote the book after saving 15 months for transporting monies for Kashamu. Although she never had a one on one meeting with Kashamu, her girlfriend at the time, worked directly with Kashamu and brought her into the cartel.

He was responsible for reinstating Obasonjo's power in Ogun state, when Gbenga Daniels (former Governor of Ogun state) was controling the state. And Kashamu boldly said he spent 3 Billion Naira to achieve this. He now wonders why Obasonjo is doing all he can to bring him down.

Read more below...

"With a mix of comedy and drama, and packed with tales of lesbian sex and inmates abused by guards, the edgy, fictionalized version of Kerman's life in prison has become one of the hottest shows in Hollywood this year. But in the real story behind the experiences of the fictional "Piper Chapman," the central character is the accused drug kingpin, a Nigerian businessman and political boss who has avoided U.S. authorities for 15 years.

Buruji Kashamu, who is frequently given the royal title "Prince" in African news reports, claims he was targeted in a case of mistaken identity. Rather than being the international drug smuggler known as "Alaji," he says he was actually a U.S. government informant who provided information about terrorist attacks on the U.S. before and after 9/11.

The U.S. attorney's office in Chicago won't say much about the case because Kashamu is still wanted on charges alleging his drug ring moved millions of dollars worth of heroin from Europe and Southeast Asia through O'Hare International Airport during the 1990s.

The case has frustrated prosecutors here, in part because they once had Kashamu in their grasp but lost him. English authorities arrested him when he landed there in 1998 and held him for five years during extradition hearings. Ultimately, however, British courts let Kashamu go after ruling that Chicago prosecutors had tainted their eyewitness identification evidence by failing to disclose that one of his co-defendants failed to pick him out of a photo lineup.

Over the years, a series of Chicago lawyers have argued on Kashamu's behalf, most recently in an unsuccessful 2011 appeal to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals attempting to have the charges dismissed.

Kashamu claims the real "Alaji" was his dead brother and that he has been mistakenly identified by everybody involved in the case. The government has argued that those claims are absurd, given that the witnesses include his former American lover and her sister, who recruited Kerman into the ring.

"We're still trying to figure out ways we can fix this for Buruji," said his Chicago lawyer, Scott Frankel. "They're trying to bring this guy back and then have a bunch of people who haven't seen him in years testify that he's the guy."

In her book, Kerman makes a few references to "Alaji," but she never mentions Kashamu by name and says she never met him. But her girlfriend "had stayed at his compound (in Benin) and been subject to 'witch-doctor' ministrations and was now considered his sister-in-law."

Published in 2010, five years after Kerman was released from a federal prison in Connecticut, "Orange is the New Black" immediately drew attention from Hollywood. By early 2012 — just a few months after appellate judges in Chicago refused to dismiss Kashamu's charges — Kerman had sold her story to Netflix."
