Pardon my intrusion here, but it does. This their senseless killing is what is taking the lives of the innocent ones, and a corper could be affected some day, if it has not even occurred yet.

‘700 NYSC corps members ready for redeployment in Plateau’

ABOUT 700 Batch “A” members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Plateau State have indicated interest to redeploy from the state.

The state coordinator, Mr Tunde Baba-Ahmed, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos, on Thursday, adding that more corps members submitted their redeployment forms after the initial 400.

“Now, there are about 700 corps members who have filled the forms for redeployment.

“We have sent the first batch of the redeployment forms to Abuja. We may send the second batch latest on Tuesday.

“But there are others who also have not submitted their forms. Those ones will be posted within Jos after their orientation,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He added that the House of Representatives resolution only affected the Batch “A”, adding that any Batch “B” or “C” member, who wanted redeployment could also apply.

The coordinator said he was only acting on the directive from the Federal Ministry of Youths, adding that he could not contravene the order.

However, the Plateau State government said it would go to court if the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Ismaila Tsiga, redeployed the corps members.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Gregory Yenlong, said the NYSC scheme, initiated by a son of Plateau, General Yakubu Gowon, was established as an instrument of national integration and development.

According to him, the redeployment was against the policy of the scheme, as corps members were redeployed only on marital grounds and extreme cases of ill health.

Why go to court, when the agency wants to save the lives of these young ones. Where is the security on ground to guarantee their safety, and why challenge the legality of redeployment in this case?

IGP Onovo arrests Senator Ucha, 40 others over Ebonyi crisis
Sat, 03/27/2010 - 06:43 — admin

, Uche denies arrest

By Emmanuel Ogbeche
Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, weekend, ordered the arrests of a serving senator from Ebonyi state, Julius Ucha and 40 others over the seeming intractable crisis that has enveloped Ezza-Ezillo communities of the state since May 10, 2008.

Onovo gave the order during a meeting at his instance with the stakeholders cutting across political office holders, government officials and leaders of thought, at the force headquarters in Abuja.

The IG who traced the origin of the crisis to land dispute between the Ezzas and the Ezillos said it was one that has caused concern to everyone in the region, noting that two committees comprised of clergies, traditional rulers and other stakeholders had been set up to resolve the issue.

These committees, which the IG said had used both conventional and traditional methods of settlement and negotiations, had failed in resolving the issue, noting that police and military intervention had also failed.

He decried the fact that the police had already lost 16 personnel and other private citizens including a director from Cross River State who was killed while travelling through the state during the week. Onovo added that police stations had been burnt in the course of the crises as well as police armed personnel carriers have been destroyed.

The police boss accused the stakeholders of sponsoring the crisis for selfish reasons as the intelligence had revealed that the perpetrators of the crime could not afford to buy the arms and weapons they employ.

According to him, he was not interested in discussing settlement with the group rather had invited them to Abuja to facilitate their arrest and enable his men move in to the state, pointing out that they would be detained until peace was restored in the area.

While apologizing for the inconvenience of keeping them in detention, Onovo said the police must do what they have to do as the people had proved over time that they understand only the language of force.

He wondered why since inception in office he has had the greatest challenge from the South East and was ready to use force to restore peace to the region.

The dispute between the communities is believed to have been hijacked by politicians who are alleged to have armed youths and other hoodlums in the state to attack members of the public and create insecurity to score political points against political opponents.

African Herald Express investigations revealed that 15 of the arrested persons include a serving senator, Julius Ucha, two local government chairmen, two commissioners and an Abuja based journalist representing the state association in the FCT were however granted bail on personal recognition.

When contacted, Senator Ucha told this paper that he was not arrested as he had gone to the meeting at the Force Headquarters on his own volition as they were seeking a lasting solution to the lingering crisis.

According to him, he left the Inspector General’s office after the meeting but would not acknowledge if the IG had ordered the arrest of all present at the meeting.

Redeploying corpers from troubled zones to save their lives, as they claim, is a tip of the iceberg. The ultimate is for our leaders to redeploy/evacuate all citizens of Nigeria to other safe countries because the whole of Nigeria is insecure.

If you want to know the level of insecurity in Nigeria now, observe the number of security aids/policemen attached to each of our leaders and other VIPs.

Our government should face reality and stop playing the ostrich!
