Here are the Koran and Hadith verbatim:

"In fact, the term ‘jihad’ itself is used in the Koran, see Sura 2:216, and within the Koran we frequently read of physical fighting, ‘qital,’ and a strong militaristic impulse, “whose fights in the cause of Allah,” see Sura 4:74; “those who fight in the cause of Allah with their… lives,” see Sura 4:95; “[f]ight against those who believe not in Allah,” see Sura 9:29. This fighting includes terror: “We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve,” see Sura 3:151; “strike terror into the enemy, see Sura 98:60. Furthermore, the Koran highlights martyrdom through fighting: “Those who believed… and fought in Allah’s cause… with their lives” receive “everlasting delights.” See Sura 9:20-22; 9:111; 57:19. The Koran promotes ‘dawah,’ inviting others to accept Islam through persuasion or defense of Islam. See Sura 16:125; 28:87.

Furthermore, the Hadith, early Muslim tradition, also connects ‘dawah’ to violence when the invitation is rejected: “[Muhammad]… invite[d] them to Islam for three days before he was to attack them… If they declined, he was to fight them… so they accepted Islam.” Again, “When you meet polytheists, summon them to Islam… if they accept, refrain from further hostilities… If they refuse to pay the tax [the second alternative], seek Allah’s help and fight them.” In another passage in the Hadith, a man in an iron mask asked Muhammad if he should fight or embrace Islam first. Muhammad replied, “Embrace Islam first and then fight.” So he “embraced Islam and was martyred.”
