GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has said that the Federal
Government must, as a matter of
urgency, release funds for tackling of
issues of environmental degradation
and security in the Niger Delta.
Wike said that while he will
not condemn the release of a
whopping $1 billion to tackle Boko
Haram, the environmental and security
challenges in the Niger Delta far
outweigh the Boko Haram conflict. The governor spoke during the Annual
General Meeting of Okpo Club of
Nigeria (Association of Ikwerre
Lawyers), weekend, in Port Harcourt. He requested the Federal Government
to release the derivation component of
the Excess Crude to the oil producing
states of the Niger Delta. He said: “Niger Delta environmental
problems are as serious as the Boko
Haram insurgency.” I am not saying that you should not
fight Boko Haram. “If you can get funds from the National
Pool to tackle Boko Haram, then you
should go to the pool to get funds to
fight environmental problems in Niger delta.

When it comes to the release of funds to tackle the issues of environmental degradation and security in the Niger Delta , Various committee will be set up to look into it and ten years after a fun fair will be organized to begin the clean up which will never see the light of day. This guys from the North think they're smart. Even after budgeting hundreds of billions of Naira yearly to fight insurgency in North East,as if that was not enough they created the North East Development Commission to rebuild their region which they destroy with their own hands - I wonder where the money will come from. And now they're asking for another $1 billion for the same north east. The last time I checked the so-called Northeast contributed nothing to this country. Wike, you are right on this but this is no a matter to discuss "during the Annual General Meeting of Okpo Club of Nigeria." The 13% oil derivatives you enjoy today was championed and made possible by people like Obong Victor Attah, Donald Duke, Peter Odili, James Ibori, etc. I am disappointed that even the Ogoni clean up that was launched a long time ago is still at that point. A more concerted, collaborative and pragmatic approach is needed here by you Governors and other true activists (not those useless, self-serving criminals called militants). Truly, FG has to do something about this now. |

santopelele: you are lucky buhari is merciful enough not to have sold all our JV investments in the Niger delta, they are basically liabilities as we speak, perhaps by the time that happens, governors like you should be smart enough to make their investments in the delta not begging Abuja like a lepper.
