Headaches are enervating and persistent pain in your head. It can be a mild throb sometimes, but other times, it can be severe; a condition described as migraine.
Sex is meant to be a pleasurable experience between two partners, however, that aim is defeated when headache comes into play. This type of headache is mostly caused by an orgasm. You may notice a dull ache in your head that escalates when sexual excitement increases.

Sex-related headaches can sometimes be felt before, during or after an orgasm.
Most sex headaches are trivial, however some can be a sign of a serious underlying ailment, which has to do with blood vessels that feed your brain.

Symptoms
There are two types of sex headaches:
• A dull ache in the head and neck that increases as sexual excitement increases.
• A sudden, acute, throbbing headache that occurs just before or at the moment of orgasm
Both types of headaches are combined in some people, with the dull ache radiating before the severe headache.



Most sex headaches last at least several minutes. Others may linger for hours or even few days.
Some persons who experience sex headaches will notice them in bunches over a few months, and then they may go for a year or more without having any sex headaches.
Consult your doctor immediately you experience a headache during sexual activity.

Causes
Sex headaches can be caused by any type of sexual activity that leads to orgasm.
Abrupt-onset and slow-to-build sex headaches can be primary headache disorders that is not connected to any causal condition. Sex-related headaches that come on abruptly are often caused by:
• Stroke
• Use of some medications, such as birth control pills
• Intracranial aneurysm (widening or bubble in the wall of an artery inside your head)
• An abnormal connection between arteries and veins in the brain (arteriovenous malformation) that bleeds into the spinal fluid-filled space in and around the brain
• Dissection (bleeding into the wall of an artery leading to the brain)
• Coronary artery disease
• Inflammation from certain infections

Sex headaches linked with vomiting, loss of consciousness, stiff neck and other neurological symptoms and severe pain lasting more than 24 hours may be caused an underlying illness.

Risk factors
• Men are more predisposed to experiencing sex headaches.
• History of migraines increases your risk of sex headaches.

Prevention
Sex headaches can be prevented by ending sexual activity before an orgasm is reached. Also, to ease symptoms, it may help to assume a more passive position during sexual activity.
