Sunday afternoon in the city of Onitsha

Great job AmericanQuater!

Its been long i saw your great posts. Thank God you have returned.

I have been expecting a full 10 - 20 minutes video of driveby in Onitsha starting from Upper Iweka end of Oguta road to Awka road to Limca road and connect via Nkpor Junction drive down the expressway towards upper Iweka and then enter Awada via Oraifite street and then connect to Tony Umeh street to Ezeiweka road in awada and re-enter Onitsha-Owerri road and drive to Harbour industrial layout.

Such a video will adequately document Onitsha metropolis. You can actually drive on a Sunday when the traffic is much less so that you can complete the circle much quicker. Then you can use a great Flavor, Zoro or Phyno Igbo music to make the video sweet.

I know making such videos will cost you time and money. So, iam only pleading and not demanding. Daalu!

I applaud some people who have done Enugu video such as:

FG Flags Off Site And Service Scheme In Anambra

The federal government has flagged off development of the Federal Sites and Services Scheme in Anambra state.

The Minister of Works, Power and Housing Mr Babatunde Fashola, performed the ceremony along Awkuzu-Umunya axis of the Enugu-Onitsha express road.

Correspondents Ngozi Obileri and Michael Ameh covered the event and report that the Federal site and services scheme will be located at Umunya-Awkuzu, in Oyi local Government area.

Inaugurating the project, Mr Fashola represented by the Director Highway construction and rehabilitation, Ministry of Works, Power and housing, Engineer Yemi Oguntominiyi expressed happiness that the project has kicked off in earnest, after a long delay since after the land was allocated due to logistics issues.

Mr Fashola said that all plans have been made to ensure that the project did not record any set back, promising that he will come back soon to commission the project.

Earlier in his speech, the traditional ruler of Umunya in Oyi Local Council area and the chairman of Oyi traditional Rulers Council Igwe Chris Onyekwuluje who commended the Minister for the visit and for making the dream a reality , thanked Federal Government for accepting to site the project in their area.

Igwe Onyekwuluje drew the attention of the Minister to what he called some anomalies that may disturb the smooth running of the schemes B and C of the project that were contained in the scheme A of the project, urging him to remedy the situation.

In an address, the chairman of Awkuzu-Umunya Allottees Committees, retired Colonel Michael Onuorah who said approval to site the project was given since 1980, regretted that work was delayed on the two hundred and thirty six hectares of land allotted for the project, appealing to the Minister to ensure early completion of the project.

In a vote of thanks, Mrs Eucharia Alozie who is a Director in the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing, appreciated Ndi Awkuzu-Umunya for the warm reception accorded them urging them to keep close monitoring on the project.

The event featured cultural dance and masquerade display.

The Minister and his entourage earlier paid a courtesy visit to all the traditional rulers in Oyi at their Secretariat in Nteje, where the traditional ruler of Nteje, Igwe Rowland Odegbo during the kolanut
ritual, prayed for peace of Oyi Council Area, Anambra state and Governor Obiano as well as Nigeria as a whole.

Very good, they should speed it up.

Addis Ababa has become a bustling, fast-changing city where buildings have shot up, construction is everywhere and greenery scarce (AFP Photo/Ludovic MARIN)
Addis Ababa (AFP) - More than 200 people paid an eye-watering $173,000 (150,000 euros) to attend a dinner thrown by Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, to raise funds to beautify the capital Addis Ababa, state media reported Monday.

The state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate published pictures of diners, some wearing tuxedos, seated at a long rose-covered banquet table.

"A seat at the event is valued at 5 million birr," the report said, adding that "over 200 individuals, representatives from local and international organizations" took part in the event.

The dinner was held to raise funds for a three-year project by Abiy to "lift the image" of the capital, a bustling, fast-changing city where modern buildings have shot up, construction is everywhere and greenery scarce.

"The rapid growth and expansion of the city over the past few years has not adequately utilised the natural resources and beautiful topography that the city is endowed with," according to a video of the project posted on Abiy's website.

The video said that currently green cover is only 0.3 square metres per capita in Addis Ababa, and the project hopes to raise this to seven square metres per capita -- in line with average green coverage in Africa.

The project along an area of 56 square kilometres (21 square miles) envisions parks, bicycle paths and walkways along the rivers of the capital, the planting of trees and the development of urban farms.

It is estimated to cost $1 billion, according to Fana.

Abiy's website said that those present at the dinner would have a plaque with their name on it placed along the project route, and would have a private photo-op with the prime minister. The pictures would be compiled into "an album of individuals who changed the face of Addis Ababa."

Abiy has won praise for his reformist agenda since taking office in April last year.

Ethiopia is home to more than 100 million people, the second most populous country on the continent after Nigeria, and its economy is the fastest growing in the region.

However, it is also one of the poorest, with the World Bank estimating average earnings of $783 per year.

Abiy's dinner drew criticism on social media with some Ethiopians questioning whether the project was really a priority for the country.

I wish our next governor will be somebody who will focus on Anambra cities in the way of building all the inner city roads, provision of water and beautify all open space and roadsides with ornamental trees etc!. Provision of city transport should also not be neglected!

Banks seeking $600m to build 1,500Mw Okija plant

A consortium of foreign lenders is ready to invest $600 million in the construction of a 1,500 megawatts (Mw) power plant in Okija, Anambra State, the Chief Executive Officer, Century Power Generation Limited, Dr Chukwueloka Umeh, has said.
The banks are to provide the funds, once the firm is ready with the predocumentation required for the construction of the plant.
Umeh, who spoke on the phone in Lagos, said local lenders had agreed to be part of the deal. He, however, refused to mention the names of the banks.

Century Power Generation is the utility arm of Nestoil Group, a conglomerate with interest in power generation and provision of gas pipelines, among others.
Umeh said: “A consortium of international banks, in conjunction with some Nigerian banks, has agreed to provide the funding, which is between $600 million and $650million in 2020. Bigger banks in Nigeria are also going to provide funds.
“The fund required for the Okija power plant is similar to the ones provided for the Azura Power Plant in Edo State. The size of the plant is huge, as it would assist in providing electricity for millions of people in the Eastern part of the country.”
According to him, financial institutions expected Nestoil Group or its subsidiary, Century Power Generation Limited to submit documents, such as Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), that are necessary for the construction of the project.
“We have been on the issue for some time. We are working to provide the documents for the release of the funds in 2020. By this, we are wrapping up the process of providing the power plant soon. Already, the company has resolved issues on the allocation of the land for the plant. What needs to be done is movement of machinery to the site of the plant, immediately the funds are ready,” he said.

Powergas Nigeria Speaks On Alternative Power Solution For South-East Nigeria

Early last week, Powergas Nigeria joined Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), key industry champions & other experts in Nigeria’s gas sector, to look at innovative ways in confronting the epileptic power situation in the region. Manufacturers in that region will continue to bleed billions of Naira if the lingering poor power situation in the country is not addressed immediately by looking into commercially viable alternative solutions to the erratic power experience by manufacturers, even with their use of back-up diesel generators.

Their assertions came during the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi Branches’ exclusive business Forum for Managing Directors and CEOs held in Enugu recently.

Speaking at the forum, the Director of Sales, Powergas Nigeria, Mr. Sumeet Singh reiterated manufacturers on the need to migrate from the use of imported diesel fuel to domestically available Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel, which is more cost-efficient and safer to handle.

“It would be difficult to put an exact figure to the loss incurred daily by manufacturers. Energy is the driving force of any economy; economies do not grow as expected when there is an immense shortfall in the supply of energy. This is why manufacturers in Nigeria need to embrace the use of natural gas which is not only a cleaner fuel but more efficient and profitable for production requirements.”

Sumeet highlighted that, “Powergas provides a complete solution across the gas-based Energy value chain. We provide the gas, the gas generator/equipment along with operations & maintenance through our Group company Cummins Power Generation Nigeria Limited. Before now, most CNG users had to depend on pipeline gas for supply and when there is none, the production process is affected due to using diesel fuel or relying on our national grid. To tackle this and guarantee an uninterrupted supply flow, we now have virtual gas pipelines as well as gas plants next to existing gas field for consistent, easy and quick access to quality gas by our customers.”

Speaking further on the need for manufacturers to switch to gas for power generation, Sumeet said that natural gas, apart from being more economically efficient, is also a ‘clean’ fuel. It puts a stop to financial loss experienced by manufacturers due to the high costs of polluting the environment, high cost of maintenance of these generators as well as high cost of the diesel fuel itself. These cost savings which will enhance the survival and growth of industries and the economy.

Also speaking at the event, the Branch Chairman, MAN Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi State Branch, Pharmacist Anietom ChuziIgweobi stated that the forum was an avenue to dialogue and network on ways of getting alternative power for manufacturers. “It is no secret that the South Western region has access to alternative sources of power such as Piped Natural Gas. Tapping into this resource enables us compete more favourably in the market, gives us a choice between national grid electricity and natural gas, and I can tell you authoritatively that gas is more reliable which then becomes a cheaper energy mix for factories.”

That report on pooling of resources to beautify Addis-Ababa is similar to what i’ve been advocating to garner funds for development in our states in particular or the region as whole.

Ours though wouldn’t be a one-off event like the Ethiopian one, but a decade long affair in which all working and capable adults from the state (or entire region as the case may be) would be mandated to pledge to contribute a small amount to a development fund for the next ten years. Diaspora would also be asked to set aside 5% of their remittances back home for this as well.

By this method, a state like Anambra could comfortably raise $10 to $15 billion in a decade!

It would take someone like a Soludo or Chidoka to organise such a monumental effort!

Gas needs processing. You cannot use it straight out of the ground. The source of processed gas is Imo from Shell's network.

Too bad Nestoil (Obi Jackson) is going for a selfish big project idea (Century Power) instead of a gas pipeline which will cost 1/10th of the $1.5 billion the power plant will need. You need a consortium of Nestoil, Seplat, IFC, ANSG to fund a pipeline through Nnewi to Onitsha and then let manufacturers and businesses do the rest. It will mean an explosion of industry in the Onitsha/Nnewi axis with spill-over effects for the rest of the state.

What Abiy is doing is standard in a lot of places but this is unique coming from government. The reality is that the budgetary resources of Anambra state is poor. 100 billion is less than N20,000 naira per resident. The services you can provide are limited. Its why ANSG partners with development agencies through matching grants for education and health and with the federal government for infrastructure.

But more is needed and organized fundraising could be a way to elicit funds for specific local projects. For example, with over 300,000 Anambrarians living outside the state, they could be approached to raise funds for things like local roads, primary healthcare facilities, health missions, local schools and libraries. The state government should create an Anambra Philanthrophy Agency, source an expert to run it and channel all state government fundraising programs through it. Make it transparent and put in checks and balances to ensure money is not misused.

You see! This is where a visionary and bold governor would have come in handy...to mobilise all these companies and gov’t agencies to see to the realisation of our energy goals! I remember there was talk when Obiano started his first term of a company (i think it was Seven Energy, owned by one Iheanacho) that will supply gas to Anambra industrial estates and also for domestic use! Nothing came of it in the end!

Consolidating investment in gas will aid multiplier effect in economy’

Dr. Ambrosie Orjiako is the Chairman of Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc. In this interview with FEMI ADEKOYA, he talks about the firm’s investment in projects that will enhance gas utilisation and domestication in Nigeria. According to him, the prospects in the sector will aid Nigeria’s gas-to-power aspirations. Excerpts.
Your investment in the gas sector is enormous. Will we see you in the midstream soon? Are you going to drill more gas wells to support your gas processing plant?
We are already in the gas midstream business. Last year, we spoke about two main things in terms of our gas business. We spoke about what we have been able to do in our gas growth, we added the capacity to process that gas and we are able to increase that processing capacity to 525 million scf a day and that was phenomenon. This year, you are also conversant that we are taking the first investment decision for our next gas business, which is the ANOH Gas Processing Company, and is more like an addition to our midstream business. That will add another 300 million scf in the first phase.

On the question of whether we will drill pure gas well, it is just a function of what we have to do to meet the capacities of what we have installed. Now, the existing gas reserves, we have a combination of associated gas and non-associated gas. When we have the need, we will drill the wells as the need arises. That is precisely what we will be doing, but we are making sure we are maintaining our leadership position in being the number one gas supplier to the domestic market. Thirty (30) per cent of gas to power the Nigerian market is a quite significant aspect of what we are doing.

How was Seplat able to recover from the oil slump that happened few years ago?
Frankly, our business is not based on the volatility of the oil market. Our business is focused on the effective and efficient delivery of projects and operations. Therefore, we pride ourselves to be a low-cost bio-operating company and therefore, in spite of the volatility and low oil price, our business continues to remain comfortable and that is really what we have demonstrated in the results you are seeing and we will continue to build on that.

How would you assess the security situation in the Niger/Delta? Are you comfortable with the present situation and what do you think could be done to make things better?
Frankly, I must say that overall, the Niger Delta security situation has improved tremendously, but there is always room for improvement and the only thing we can do is that all hands must be on deck; the communities will play their role, and to get them to play their role, the operating companies must play their roles.

We will like to see a situation where the relationship continues to improve between the operating companies and the communities. Secondly, the government must also keep to their promises and once you put all of this together, you can only see improvement and more calm in the Niger Delta. Infrastructure development and employment creation especially among the youth are the key instruments to maintaining long term peace in the Niger- Delta.

On the Assa-North Ohaji-South gas project, when are we expecting it to come on stream and what impacts will it create in the nation’s economy?
Seplat and NGC have both contributed $100m each. We are expecting another $50m each from both parties by idyear and the final payment of $60m each by year end. There are 5 major contract packages to be awarded this year. Guidance is that we’ll have first gas by Q1/Q2 2021.
It will have a phenomenal impact and we are expecting that once this comes on track, it will enhance the demand in the western Niger Delta and more importantly, it will create demand in the eastern Niger Delta and we have already began to see that happen. We have seen a lot of people in the eastern states and even the south-south coming to make inquiries about buying this gas and this is a very welcome development.

Apart from power, there are also other aspects of the economy that this will impact – the agricultural sector, industries and overall; as well as the manufacturing sector will be impacted. Therefore, when we say that Seplat is a company that is well keyed into the economic development of Nigeria, we mean that we are extremely impactful with employment and empowerment key in our operations. So, apart from gas to power, the real trickle-down effect or the real multiplier effect in the economy will be a phenomenon and I am looking forward to the entire country to be extremely happy with what we are doing and for other companies to emulate.

As one of the major suppliers of gas to the Azura Power plant, which other companies are you looking to partner with when the ANOH gas project becomes operational?
The best way to describe Seplat, which tallies with a lot that has been spoken about our differentiation, is that we have created a race in this competition that only us are running and frankly, by the time the others come, we will create other races. Our gas development is one of those types. We have demonstrated the ability to do willing-buyer/willing-seller supply of gas and in addition to meeting our domestic supply obligations.

There are not many companies that have met this and what I will like to say about Azura is that it is a willing-buyer/willing-seller arrangement and it is a take or pay arrangement. The people around there are happy that Azura has come on stream and it is actually one of the successful Independent Power Projects (IPPs) in the country and we are happy to be associated with it.

The truth of the matter is that the demand is high and it is growing so we are not indeed short of the market. Gas is one market where supply creates demand, but in this case, we have a situation where demand is already existing before the supply; so, we can only do one thing and which is continue to grow that business and if you look at the infrastructure gap in Nigeria for power alone, you can only say that the future is bright and we can only grow that business.

It is assumed that the commercial and financial framework for gas-to-power is weak. Is it still cheaper to flare gas despite the recently passed law on gas flaring?
LNG transfer price is below domestic market prices. Nonetheless a lot needs to change with the domestic market to make it more viable including adjusting exchange rate to market rate, achieving prompt payment of invoices transiting from the DSO framework to a liberalized market.
In respect to the gas flare, it is really a true statement that anybody who is still flaring gas today, is actually burning petrodollars because the penalty that has been revised will mean that you will pay as much penalty as you would have received revenue for investing in the gas. So, that by itself is an investment for people to invest. From my own perspective, we are not only committed to the gas business just for revenue, because we pride ourselves as a company that keeps very high in our priority, environmental stewardship, and we see that the gas development will not only take away flare from the environment but will also bring cleaner energy in the environment and that is key.

The other aspect of this business will include LPG. In fact, somebody raised the issue in our AGM and one of the things we do with LPG is to take people away from burning bushes and firewood to take cleaner ways of cooking, so it has a very multifaceted advantage to the society and that is why we are doing it.

Are you saying the current arrangement under the new law will encourage investors to come into the sector?
Yes, that is the point. The core domestic gas price is adequate to attract investments in Nigeria and it is comparable to international gas price and people should be able to invest and that is why we are investing and we are making money. Can’t you see in our report that gas revenue is almost getting to 50 percent of oil revenue and it speaks for itself?

Are you venturing into petrochemicals in the future?
Obviously, our business is in the energy sector which is a broadband and we will definitely take one step at a time. Today, we are concentrating in our oil and gas business where we are consolidating our upstream business in production. We have now launched the midstream and will like to see how we progress with that. We consolidate before we take other options and we are very focused.
