At least, you can agree that it's almost the same size as our "Roban stores" like you said. Only God knows what people like you would have said if the runway was 1.9km with room for expansion to 2.3km. That was were they started from.

Kotoka airport new terminal is 25,000 sqm or roughly the size of the international airport terminal in Port Harcourt built to support 1 million passengers. It is at least 5 times the size of the Umuleri airport terminal. The fact that they stopped at 2.3km for the runway shows you that length depends on what you need an airport for. Kumasi is a domestic airport for flights within Ghana and the sub region. 2.3km is good enough for smaller jets particularly the workhorse of the industry the 737.

For Nigeria it shows you how practical people think not illiterates. A 3.4km runway may support a 747 or Airbus A380 but how many airlines use this huge jumbo jets anymore? How many 747s land at Lagos of Abuja?

The real reason Airbus is retiring its A380 superjumbo jet

The real reason Airbus is retiring its A380 superjumbo jet
Getty Images News

The Airbus A380 is the world's biggest passenger jet plane – and the plane many might imagine when thinking of splurging on a first-class seat, getting a free business class flight with their company or even relaxing more than in many other planes in economy – the double-decker plane offers more comfort and stability than its rivals.

Sometimes this goes to the extreme. Private flat-bed suites, an up-in-the-air lounge and cocktail bar, personal mini-bar at each seat – Emirates even built shower spas on board of its fleet of the double-decker planes. “We’ve developed the most passenger preferred aircraft in the world,” Airbus head of business analysis and market forecast Bob Lange says.

So why has Airbus decided to kill it?

The main reason the company will halt production of A380 after 12 years, from 2021, is the low number of planes sold. “In the end, you have to face facts, and we could see that we were building A380s faster than people were ordering them,” Lange says. Emirates is the only airline to significantly invest in the plane, making up more than half of the 300-odd orders for the superjumbo jet since its launch in 2007. In total, the airline has 110 A380s in service, and 13 more on order.

But even the Dubai-based airline decided to cut its final order by 39 planes, from 162 to 123 aircraft, on Valentine’s Day this year – a move that effectively signalled the end for the world’s biggest aircraft as Airbus then announced it would stop making the planes. “The greatest success of the A380 has been its symbiotic [12 year-long] relationship with Emirates,” says Lange.

But it also played a role in its downfall. “Emirates has been more successful with the aircraft than anyone else, but ironically, because of that success, other airlines had a hard time finding markets with enough volume to compete,” Lange says. As it announced its decision to stop buying the superjumbo jet, in June, Emirates also said it would purchase 40 smaller planes from Airbus – the A330-900 and 30 A350-900 aircraft. The deliveries should start from early 2021.

Apart from Emirates, a number of other airlines, including Lufthansa and Air France – airlines of Germany and France, the main manufacturers of the Airbus A380 – have also decided to stop buying the planes. Lange says that if an airline can fill an A380, the plane will generate $150m (£124m) of revenue per year. But the challenge is filling all those seats. The two 49.9 metre decks of an A380 can, at their maximum capacity, contain 868 people.

Lufthansa sold six A380s back to Airbus earlier this year, saying that they were unprofitable. Qantas cancelled its last A380 order in February, just like Emirates, keeping only 12 jumbo jets. Qatar Airlines, which has ten A380s in its fleet, has announced it will switch to Boeing 777Xs from 2024. So what went wrong?

The A380’s capacity was supposed to be its biggest advantage. “Most of the world’s major airlines told us they needed a larger aircraft to cope with traffic growth and congestion,” says Lange. Bigger planes meant fewer terminal gates would be needed to accommodate more people.

Plus, more seats meant more passengers, which meant lower fares. Everybody prefers flying direct, but passengers’ biggest factor of choice is the ticket price. So even though the superjumbo jets – with their whopping 80-metre wingspans – could only travel between big city hub airports, passengers were willing to deal with a stopover to pay a little less.

And once a plane ages, the cabin should be upgraded. The more seats there are to upgrade, the more costly it gets. That was one of the reasons Air France, the first European airline to fly the jet, decided to ditch A380 on August 5. The estimated cost of upgrading economy and business classes, at over $45 million (£37m), was just too much compared to investing into newer aircraft instead. That was just one of the reasons the French airline decided to retire all of its ten A380s by 2022 and instead replace them with 60 smaller Airbus A220-300s, with 149 passenger capacity.

Commentary: Awka City Stadium, A New Dawn In Sports Development In Anambra

It was a World Heavy Weight Boxing Champion, Evander Holyfield, who once said that the favorite part of any game is to have the opportunity to play it. And an Olympic medalist, Picabo Street, says you cannot play any game when you don’t have the wherewithal to do so.

Hence, it has always been something of an irony that for all her array of sporting talents, Anambra State does not have a standard sporting facility. From Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Gold Medalist; to Innocent Egbunike, the Olympic Bronze Medalist; Mary Onyali, two times Olympic Bronze Medalist; Francis Obikwelu, Olympic Silver Medalist and Uchenna Emedolu, Olympic Silver Medalist, Anambra has contributed quality athletes that brought honour to Nigeria.

And in football, Anambra’s Emmanuel Okala, who turned 70 last week, is Nigeria’s first winner of the African Footballer of the Year award. The state also parades legendary footballers like, Silvanus Okpala, Kenneth Boardman, Aloysius Atuegbu, Keneth Ilodigwe, Arthur Egbuna, Chimezie Nwanaga, Louis Igwillo, Ifeanyi Onyedika, Amaechi Otti, Okwuchukwu Obiora, Charles Okonkwo, Ikechukwu Ofoje, Obinna Nsofor, Mikel Obi, Victor Anichebe as well as the ace Commentator, Ernest Okonkwo.

It is therefore something of regret that the state has no stadium of its own. What Anambra has are some privately owned stadia, including Neros Stadium, Rojenny Sports Stadium and Gabros International Stadium now rechristened Ifeanyi Ubah Stadium. However, the facilities are not located in the state capital, Awka. They are located at Nanka, Oba and Nnewi respectively. As a fast developing capital city, Awka needs modern facilities for leisure, sports, recreation, conferences, lifestyle and business.

Gladly, Governor Willie Obiano has now built a stadium in Awka. Located in the heart of the city, few months ago, this glittering stadium, a FIFA recognized project, was a piece of abandoned land where daring herders grazed their cattle. But work has reached advanced stages on the stadium.

It was designed as a compact sporting facility with a covered stand, swanky dressing rooms, an electronic scoreboard, FIFA-standard pitch and Olympic-standard tartan tracks for sprinters. The facility was designed to accommodate future expansion possibilities and still retain a large parking space.

And so, finally, Ndi Anambra will have access to modern sporting and recreational facilities that will boost their hopes for an improved lifestyle and reduce the pressure on Alex Ekwueme Square, which was not conceived as a facility for sports but has been converted to one by expediency.

The new Awka Stadium will further deepen development of football in the state. It will equally keep our youth busy positively because an idle mind is always a devil’s workshop. Once again, Governor Willie Obiano has left an indelible footprint in an area where it matters a lot…Sports, just as he did in aviation industry by constructing a magnificent Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport. Work is equally at advanced stage at the International Conference Centre, Agu Awka. No wonder an analyst once said that Akpokuedike is South East best governor in history. Imagine giving Anambra all its first basic and social amenities and legacy projects in seven years.

It would be recalled that the governor had, ahead of the completion of the stadium complex, announced formation of men and women football teams for the state to be called ‘Anambra Bombers and Anambra Babes’ respectively to represent the state in national and international competitions.

Furthermore, Anambra had launched the Anambra Football Campaign, to canvass grassroots support for football advancement in the state. Meanwhile, the FIFA licensed contractor handling the construction of the Awka Township Stadium has assured that the stadium would, on completion, be the best mini stadium in sub-saharan Africa. The construction of the stadium is in three phases. The first phase addressed important facilities like track and field, dressing rooms, terraces, changing rooms and the general aesthetics of the stadium. The second phase addressed areas such as the Governor’s Lounge, cubicles for fans and press conference room. The third and final phase, which required temporal closure of the stadium for about six months, handled complete covering of the pavilions. Bravo Akpokuedike!

It was a gathering of who-is -who in Anambra government circles, including Government functionaries, politicians, Captains of industry and Ndi Anambra, as they came out in their numbers to support their own, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo as he picked the Gubernatorial nomination form of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), for the November 6, Anambra governorship election.

Before his arrival at the APGA national secretariat in Abuja, supporters waited patiently waiting and when he arrived, chants of Odenigbo and Odenjiji rented the air.

Unlike every other states, there must be tension that's why we have securities. Have you heard of continuous gunshots or violence in any part of Anambra state.

Look at the arialview of Anambra state capital in 2021(Highway state capital). Is this loudable or laughable? Will heaven fall if the state government dualize this Arthur Eze avenue and Unizik temp site to Okpuno/Isuaniocha bridge?

Is that the only part of the city? What about this this too? Though I am advocate of more infrastructural advancement and developments across Anambra. Next administration will continue where Obiano stops to expand the infrastructures in the city and across the state.

Noticed how vehicles are recklessly parked/scattered everywhere all in the name of bus stop. It's too bad that Awka as a state capital don't have central park.
What about demolishing that brown roof dominanted TRACAS park, build a standard multistorey car park there, then connect the Enugu lane (side) of the express way to the multistorey park on the otherside by building an interchange across the highway?
Then turn that Eastern mass motor park and environ to a garden.

Very good suggestion concerning the central park, though we have some already in the city but more is needed
