As 30 States Propose N8trn: Only Lagos, Rivers, Anambra Can Fund Budget ‘With Ease’

Many of the 36 states of the federation have increased their budget proposals for the year 2022 compared to what they spent in 2021, findings by Daily Trust have revealed.

Most of the states jacked up their spending prospect amid cash crunch and debt burden, with experts calling for caution.

Our correspondents report that 30 states that have so far presented their 2022 budget estimates to their Houses of Assembly have a total of N7.899trn, up from the N7.0trn they budgeted in 2021.

This difference amounts to a N900bn increase, which represents 11.4 per cent increase.

The findings also revealed that only three states can effectively fund their budgets without “big push” from the federal government.

According to BudgIT’s state of states report 2021, only Lagos, Rivers and Anambra can fund their budgets without much trouble.

BudgIT is a Nigerian civic organisation that applies technology for citizen engagement with institutional improvement to facilitate societal change. It also provides social advocacy using technology.

The agency said Lagos, Rivers and Anambra states appeared at the top of its ranking because “they meet their operating expenses obligations with a combination of their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and Value Added Tax (VAT).

This state has always been a model for fiscal governance.
I imagine what the future holds when the wealth from recently discovered Oil & Gas deposits is efficiently maximized.
The current and future Governments have big shoes to fill.

The state has not always been. IGR before Obiano was a meager 500 million monthly. I recall when obiano during beginning of his second tenure said he intends for Anambra not to depend on FAAC after his tenure and he has almost achieved that. Excellent performance

During GEJ tenure , Peter Obi was the most fiscally responsible government of that era. This was confirmed by nobody else but Madam Ngozi Okonjo Iweala.

You are intelligent, you know what you are doing, and I will leave you to that.
You know in dollars, there is no growth in revenue of Anambra State. If care is not taken, 500m 10 11yrs ago, may be worth more in dollars than 2b today. And of course, when serious growth is been calculated, it is been done in dollars.
Naira is useless.
Run the calculations in dollars, shame go catch you.
I don't expect you to shaa, so let's allow it lie.

You need to go back to primary school. How come Enugu, Ebonyi etc that were doing more IGR than Anambra before Obiano are now doing lesser. We dont spend dollars in Nigeria so calculating IGR with dollars shows you're an Illiterate that needs to go back to elementary school.

Stop sounding foolish. Anambra IGR is currently over 2.5 billion. Even if we use your foolish dollar logic, 500 million in 2013 is not above 2.5 billion of today, plus other states like Enugu and Ebonyi were all doing over 500 million in 2012, so explain why Anambra is generating more in revenue than them at the moment. keep quiet and learn. Peter Obi supporters always sound foolish trying to support his mediocre performance

Yes, flights have been landing and to and from Lagos and Abuja since last week. The current Airpeace 5-days schedule is:
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Saturday and
Sunday.

One hopes that the airport road is used to jump-start a modern business district in Anambra state. The types of buildings and hotels allowed along that road, as well as the trees, flowers, and road markings should all be done at the highest standard. Like the picture on the left.

One hopes that someone in government will get around and properly mark the road for a start. Then the state ministry of lands and urban planning will mark out the plots on that road for the types of buildings and services expected on the road.

Every effort must be made to prevent this road from becoming another Ziks avenue with Eke Awka type of market buildings allowed along this airport road. There are already A LOT of shady developers claiming to have land for estates and trading stores along that road! One hopes the state will jealously protect that area to help launch Anambra as a state that has modern central business district areas.

Onitsha Fire Incident: Anambra State Government Takes Possession Of Site

By Ejike Abana (ABS Government House Correspondent)

Anambra State Government has sealed and taken possession of the fuel station, Chris Tee and Silver Fuel Station which was gutted by fire last night.

Governor Willie Obiano who gave the directive when he visited the scene, directed law enforcement agencies to close down fuel stations in the state where gas skits are cited.

The governor explained that he got Intel that the fire was ignited when the dealers were in the process of offloading and discharging cooking gas.

However, he expressed happiness at the response time by the fire service and security agencies and warned dealers to desist from building gas skits within their premises.

The member representing Onitsha Constituency 2 at the State House of Assembly, Mr. Eddy Ibuzo, Transition Committee Chairman for Onitsha North, Mr. Patrick Ayamba, Anambra State Fire Chief, Mr. Martin Agili, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Petroleum matters, Mr. Peter Nwosu as well as heads of security agencies, were at the scene to recieve the governor.

Recall that on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at about 7.30pm, the fire broke out at one of the petrol stations (Chris Tee) around Borromeo roundabout, Onitsha.

Thankfully, no life was lost.

Exactly! It can be quite tiring and frustrating atimes when we have to re-emphasise the bleeding obvious that needs to be done. We’re all used to how things are normally done.....though quality and adherence to world-class standards in specific projects have gone up in the Obiano era!

We need to keep banging on about these things otherwise standards may slip! Like the airport road you mentioned for instance...major earthworks and construction have long since finished, so by now we should expect the roads to be marked, the street lights....traffic lights.....and road/route signs installed, and the trees, flowers/shrubs and grassing on the median and verges all done and watered regularly!

More accolades continues to flow in from commuters to the govt and Amawbia community on the grading of internal roads for free flow of vehicular movt.

Still on this,we learned that during the fresh lock up days of the SCID/Prison road...boys around Amawbia began to station themselves in preparation to start levying motorists using the alternate routes. But the PG and the good pple of Amawbia said a capital ‘NO’ to such unscrupulous act. Highly commendable. I am glad we still have sane minds down east.

Anambra must condemn all forms of touting and illegal taxation’s by some unscrupulous elements in the state.

Nobody is in doubt that Obiano truly transformed Anambra and took it to a higher level. Only two sets of people can be from Anambra state and claim not to appreciate Obiano.

1. Kidnappers and violent criminals whose business syndicate was destroyed by his Operation Kpochapu
2. Politicians who thought they could use Obiano as a puppet to loot the state's treasury.

One must appreciate Obiano that despite refusing to be used as a puppet to loot the state, he magnanimously completed the Agulu Lake Hotel to the highest standard, and the Onitsha mall without simply abandoning them and starting his own as 99.9% of politicians would do.
