Dude you are talking with Airheads here. It's the same thing with governors building airports.

Rather than spend that money on a sea port, the governor should be building rail lines to Onne and the Port Harcourt airport.

That is what I am saying you get sense rather than every state building Seaport why not build rail lines with cargo coaches that will move your goods down to your state and relieve the roads of pressure from large trailers and tankers.

I am pretty sure if all coastal states build a Seaport some will definitely experience little or no patronage.

Tor. May the best seaport win. Also add Osun, Ekiti and Anambra airport city projects to the list. At the end of the day you will find out that many of these governors have not paid workers or pensioners.
We just have few days into 2018, where general elections will just be months away. In fact, let them award contracts similar to the Lagos Atlantic city in their respective states. The citizens will be the ones to suffer from the impoverishment

How it your problem if the governors of the SS decides to build deep seaport for economic growth..Bad belle.

so in your mind the Apapa seaport should be the only functional port in Nigeria abi?
BTW Lagos state government is also planning the Badagry seaport, so what is your problem.
The Bayelsa people have the right to own a deep seaport port to boost trade and commerce.
Of all the problem of Bayelsa State is it sea port the most important thing they need for now? Has the government pay his state salary up to date. This is just a wasted fund, cos Bayelsa has no internal roads, no good market etc even the airport project is still 10% completed. The only few projects going on in the state right now are NDDC projects.

Most of the governors start this projects because of the huge funds involved. It's easy to loot with this kind of project.

The coastal States need just one mega Seaport and one airport. Then massive rail lines that connect all the States to the Sea Port and airport.

That way, each state can avoid competing with each other.

What people looking TonyeBarcanista hasn't realised is Ogun State gets the largest share of FDI coming into the country and it doesn't have a Sea Port or an airport. Ogun's State marketing is simply "We are one hour away from Lagos with more land".

Which welcome development? PH has a Port as well as Warri,Calabar and they are neighbouring states to Baylesa. Must every state with access to Sea have a Seaport?

All SS states have plans to build a deep Seaport how visible is that?
Edo wants to build Gelegele deep Seaport, Cross-River wants to build a new deep seaport ,Ibaka deep Seaport in Akwa-ibom, Now Agge deep Seaport in Bayelsa with the existing ones in Calabar,Warri,PH and Onne ports.

Some will definitely experience low patronage because ships can only berth/land in a few ports around the same axis.

all of the above mention sea port are not really working so the need to build workable ones are there , it will also encourage competition in the region which is good for business

Be reasonable, building Seaport in every SS state is not sustainable, some of them will definitely experience low or no patronage. Baylesa can always use the Seaport in its neighbouring states like PH port, Onne port and Warri port. Edo also can also use the one in Warri.

Edo and Baylesa building their own will most likely amount to waste of resources that can be channelled into something else.

Edo proposed sea port according to the plan of edo state government is to export her agricultural products. According to the plan of the edo state government who has woo alot of agro expert to invest in commercial agri and agro business to it will be unwise to transports her massive products to delta before exporting. If state like lagos can own apapa and still in lekki deep seaport and other seaport within her plan so what stop edo from investing in seaport to boost her IGR. For your information beyesa has 70pcent water(deep sea) and the project was long over due but for the carelessness and ineffectuality Jonathan and it cost them lack of federal support. So therefore it's a welcome development and should be encourage without political interference

Too much of everything is bad as they say but
I am surprised that u re still feeling the way u do about the sudden need for deep sea ports in the Niger Delta,u should ve known before now that all the governors especially of the Niger Delta region re so bereft of ideas that when just one of them initiates an idea he feels is noble enough without recourse to the expediency of such they just latch on and follow suit,it's nothing but a pity, how can all the states in one geographical region have tg need for just one particular kind of infrastructure/ sea ports, this same thing was done with international airports, and after all said and done how many of the airports re still functioning ? They re misfits for the offices that they occupy

They are not working because of low patronage, most ships berth in Lagos ports .They should be talking to the NPA to divert more ships there and reduce the freight cost to encourage people to use them not building new ones that will still go through the same issue as the ones before.

Is just like building a 4 flat building in the middle of a slum with nobody to afford the rent and the landlord is still trying to build more flats even when the ones he built have not been occupied.

You are talking as if this States have unlimited funds. There's something called opportunity cost.

Having a Seaport doesn't improve IGR unless the Port has close to 100% usage rate.
Has the Governor found out why the Warri Port is not viable? What has he done to make sure the Edo Port doesn't go the way of Warri Port?

Wouldn't it be smarter to build a rail line from Benin to Warri? The rail way line would carry people as well as goods hence serving a larger number of Edolites?

It isx better they all build it. At least we will have something to be starring at. Better than using the money to buy mansions in London, Dubai and Capetown!

Realistically, all the ports can work if we had leaders and people that had the slightest form of intelligence.
The Niger Delta sits atop some of the largest gas reserves in the world enough to power the whole of Africa.
If the guys at the helm have a brain, plug and play industrial parks with access to the cheapest energy would be built accross the region which would attract investors like crazy.

Edo state is lucky as the Governor Obaseki is one with a brain. He is building an industrial park on the back of the Azura power plant and then capping it with the gelegele seaport. And he is not just talking. The Azura plant is already built. The Industrial park is in motion. And the seaport would soon start.

Talking about delta seaport; i advice you carryout a study on koko and warri seaport whish is poorly manage due to failure on the part of their government. And are you also inform that these seaport also increase employment too?
For the rail lines project; the federal ministry of transports is already working on that and it amount to waste in investing on an already federal project. I know you are not wiser than the investors or government investing on these project to boost productivity and employment in her regions

This right here is the reason why Nigeria as a whole doesn't work.
1) Don't compare any State with Lagos. Lagos has the population and market.
2) Saying a Seaport or airport increases IGR shows that you know nothing about economics. How has the Warri Port increased the IGR of Delta State? How has the Airport in Benin increased the IGR of Edo State?
3) Saying building a Sea Port would provide jobs is short sighted. You don't build a Sea Port because it would provide jobs, you build a Sea Port because it's economically viable.
4) The reason why the Warri Port doesn't function is because there's no traffic. The same thing would affect the Edo Port and Bayelsa Port.

Let them all build deep-sea ports if they can. At least they can't say Lagos is cheating them anymore. And we should commend these guys, some Calabar men would give the contract to foreign companies so that kickback would be funneled to their offshore accountgrin

Note that Florida alone has 6 and in all the USA has 552 ports. Ports mean trade, trade means more business, more business means better economy! So I completely agree with all SS states on this. Let's even try to create another Lagos somewhere else. Abuja would have been good, but e no get water. Empirical evidence shows cities by the sea are usually more prosperous.

While I agree with your position on Rail, sadly last I checked it's the sole responsibility of FG (especially inter-state). The port is really not a bad idea if we look at it assuming the leaders can galvanize business to it and allow private concerns free hand to explore.

Stop comparing US to Nigeria, they make ships, they manufacture goods and they have a huge economy. Each state is a country on its own with many states having a bigger GDP than most European countries.

How many ships will berth in Edo and Bayelsa ports that will cause traffic of ships and inturn bring in IGR for the state.

Some projects are not viable, they should use the money for something else that will bring in revenue.

You like most Nigerians see ports as avenue to import goods. What people tend to forget is ports also means of exporting your own goods. The population is on rise and Nigeria will import more naturally as income rises. The good things about ports you neglected in your argument is the free trade zone status they are granted. Free trade zones attract a big percentage of the investment with Nigeria because they don't have some of the regulations foreign companies dislike.

If viability only comes down to who can bring in cheap imports at lowest cost then sure theirs an issue. If it means who can attract industries and export goods there's room for everyone. The port cost will be different example between Ibom DSP and Cross River DSP being CRDSP needs to be dredge more because it's shallower. The next thing is the super highway they're building to clear goods might not be ready anytime soon and they will have lots of tolls. I'm not sure if Akwa Ibom tolling their super highway.

There are ways around the rail issues and isn't that why we have National Assembly members?

People say we should return to regionalism as the country was progressive then but the chances of having it now is slim at least politically but economically it can be done.

The SS, SE, SW can and should come together as a region to foster development.
There's no freaking reason why Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States should be competing against each other.

The reason why Tinapa is not as viable as it should is because Cross River why alone on that project.

You do not compete with your neighbors, you complement them.
