Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Wednesday described as shameful that Nigeria under the President Mohammadu Buhari cannot refine enough fuel for domestic consumption despite being the Minister of Petroleum.

The Chairman of the Union, Deji Omole, who stated this while featuring as guest of the month at the Oyo State Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) stated that those leading Nigeria do not believe in Nigeria and are not committed to solving her problems.

Omole said the situation under Buhari played out similar situation of regimes before him, adding that it was obvious that neither APC nor PDP has the solution to the problems facing ordinary Nigerians.

The ASUU chairman further said that Nigerians appeared to have been defrauded by the government when the President said he would want to oversee the Ministry himself to get the desired change.

The ASUU boss who lashed out at the APC-led Federal government said nothing would change in the Education and health sectors since the President believes his children can school and graduate abroad while he can access quality health care in the UK.

While alleging that the Buhari government is not serious about fighting corruption, the ASUU chairman challenged the EFCC to make public outcome on the petition the Union submitted to it on the corruption at the University of Ilorin.

According to Omole, nearly 75% of Nigeria-trained qualified doctors have left the country while those at home are planning to leave owing to the poor working conditions and bad welfare schemes.

“That we cannot refine oil for local consumption let alone for export is a shame. This is still happening because those leading us do not believe in Nigeria. It is unfortunate that those leading this country run abroad for health, education and even save stolen funds abroad. They only preside over a country they do not believe in. The Government of Buhari has continued to slide down the budget allocation to education. In Nigeria now, corruption is official because the government only makes noise rather than fight the scourge.”

It is a shame that the APC government is waiting for Dangote Refinery to commence production in 2019 and has the intent to use it as an achievement for 2019 election campaigns. It has completely ruined and abandoned the three national refineries without any clear-cut plan for its refurbishment or even sale. Afterall, Buhari already successfully made those nepostistic appointments in NNPC any talks on performance is no longer neccessary. I just feel for Nigerians

with the number of professors and PhDs in Nigerian Universities, it a Shame for ASUU to complain about the state of the Nation

You are so myopic. No civilised country government has a refinery.

United States of America, France etc don't own a refinery. Private companies like Dangote owns the refineries.

The more private companies owns things like refinery and other productive ventures, the better the economy of that country.

pmb was PTF executive chairman for 5 years, 94-99, a period when Nigerians witnessed some of the worst fuel scarcity, highest increases in fuel & paid over $12b in subsidies & saw a total collapse of our refineries.


as ES, PTF, buhari had total control on funds expenditure, had a budget that was equivalent to the capital budgets of all ministries put together & could spend money as he deemed fit with no oversight...
