ABUJA, April 6 (Reuters) - Nigeria's Acting President Goodluck Jonathan will take charge of the power ministry and not appoint a minister for now, a spokesman said on Tuesday.

"The purpose (of the decision) is to achieve the set targets in the power sector by the administration," said presidency spokesman Ima Niboro. (Reporting by Felix Onuah; Writing by Randy Fabi; Editing by Keiron Henderson)

difference is, with oil, there's a net inflow of funds, dude doesn't have anything to gain by keeping the portfolio to himself, his not appointing a minister means he was unable to find one that he trusted. . .SMH

LOL. . . i think this is a shrewd political move.

I suspect he has surveyed what's on ground
and realised many of the power projects will
soon come on stream.

Well. . .let him just bring everything to fruition.
We have lived in darkness for long enough.

Re: Jonathan To Keep Power Portfolio For Now by otukpo(f): 1:27pm On Apr 07, 2010
Jonathan is better with the Power Ministry unlike OBJ that took Petroleum Ministry where he will steal all the money.
i think Jonathan took Power Ministry so that he can properly supervise the ministry to ensure electricity improves. Lets just wait and see how things unfold.

Re: Jonathan To Keep Power Portfolio For Now by nduchucks: 1:53pm On Apr 07, 2010
It is rather arrogant of GJ to keep the power portfolio to himself as if he does not have enough to do as acting president.  If he could not find a competent Nigerian for the post, then he himself and his search team are incompetent.

The Americans have pledged their support for immediate assistance in the power sector, GJ needs to allow a minister to handle the executive authorities in that ministry and GJ should focus on getting all the international help we've been promised.  This seems like an attempt to score cheap political points - this is irresponsible!

Come on!
You're only saying this because you are a big shot and the cost of fuel for your generator doesn't bother you. Think of all the little guy's who must depend on PHCN for survival; in such peoples eyes, what Jonathan has done is nothing short of commendable. This is the same sector that others have tried and failed to bring success to; from IBB to the 16billion in Obj's time, still no dice! Yet Jonathan is brave enough to take the leper into his hands and breath life.

The power sector has always been very close to Jonathans heart. Lets not forget that he was the first (and only) government official to ever apologise for the failure to meet the 600MW baseline Yar'Adua's govt set for power supply. Lets wish Joe all luck and success in delivering electricity to Nigerians.

Its a very know fact (by local and international bodies) that Nigeria has the capacity to produce and maintain stable power nationally in matter of just months. But why this is unachievable remains a mystery to some.

Just to remind you we are in a country where when one with good and honest intentions is appointed as minister, he is forced to dance to the music of those "cabals" who worked to get him appointed(note appointment is rarely by merit). Most often times, he is instructed to frustrate certain projects that the govt embarks upon just for their personal gains. On failure of such a minister to cooperate, he is threatened with been removed from office.

This is what has been thriving with successive ministers especially in the power sector and its no secret but an open secret.

Now jonathan in all seriousness and aware of this has decided to see to things take a full swing in the right direction.

Yes, ppl say he may be trying to impress Nigerians to get their votes whenever, but common ppl have to say something/complain. Rightly, in a democracy,  the only way a politician can gain votes is to deliver not corner votes by rigging. So he is in the right. I think we should all be commending him.

Re: Jonathan To Keep Power Portfolio For Now by rebranded(m): 3:35pm On Apr 07, 2010
one of the reasons is cause we dont have enough gas. Niger delta militants have been blowing up gas pipe lines, however im still possible GJ will turn things around in that sector.

Why didnt he think of lady Dora? If she could fix the messed up NAFDAC she can fix NEPA. She will do good somewhere she will actually be working and not reduced to playing rubbish politics with the boys.
