In the video below teaching Nigerian kids abroad how to play and blend traditional Igbo gospel music, traditional wooden flute called 'Oja' normally used in most Igbo cultural ceremonies was incorporated. Some people liked it, while some didn't. However, the Yoruba talking drums, Fuji music, and even traditional Yoruba 'Apala' music have become integral parts of modern day praise and worship in Nigerian churches. My question is 'why are certain African traditional musical instruments like the wooden flute "Oja" demonized? Surprisingly it's demonized by the same Igbos who own it while they embrace instruments from other cultures.

Why can't we be proud of our African cultural heritage, use it to serve God and don't treat it as inferior and demonic?

Watch the controversial 3 mins educational video produced by US-based Nigerian cultural promoter, Mr. Godwin C. Nwaogwugwu, to the end and let's know what you think.

Who said its demonic?

Problem is that its very difficult to infuse Igbo traditional instruments like oja into the mainstream musical equipment. It gives it an off tune if not properly coordinated.

Yoruba's talking drum is not too different from the igba or even the standard Western drums. It cannot be compared to oja.

Besides, do you listen to Fr Ejike Mbaka's songs?

Only the Catholic church openly embraces and incorporates cultures of the communities where they exist. Most other churches in Nigeria preach against, disdain, attack and even try to destroy them. It's ignorance and the wide-spread colonial mentality in Africa. Many harmless and colorful Igbo cultures are dead bc of churches.

Nice video though. Thumbs up!!!!
