Read this on pmnews yesterday. Even though he operates in a world most can only dream about, there were several lessons to take from the story. I personally found his journey very inspiring, despite not reaching the goal.

Remi then revealed the biggest bombshell of my Chevron Netherlands adventure. The managing director of Petrogas of Oman was a close friend of his and he knew he was bidding for Chevron Netherlands at the time. If I had told him what I was up to when we saw in London, whilst I was searching for the last bidder, he would have introduced us. I was blown away. There it was that whole time. That mystery last bidder that I had searched so hard for was there for my taking and it passed right by me.

I went back home that night and made myself the strongest drink. History couldn’t tell this story. I would have to.

Just look at the comments on this thread and you'll realise that more Nigerians suffer from intellectual poverty than financial poverty.

The lessons to be learnt from that article are more than what some Nigerians learnt in their entire time spent in school and they don't have the wisdom to read and pick a lesson or two.

10 Years from now, Paddy would be a billionaire under 40, some people who picked lessons from this article might have surpassed Paddy in wealth but our dumb friends would still be shouting "I receive" in Church not knowing that their Pastors are also reading and picking lessons from this post.

Nice story but the Paddy Adenuga story that has been over hyped over the last few hours. Reeks of rich privelege. His good writing also makes the whole thing more important than it actually is. As far as I am concerned, the entire story/incident holds no lessons or insights for the average human being.

What lessons exactly? How about you point out the lessons? The reality of the average Nigerian is different from the reality of Adenuga. The whole story does not provide any actionable insight for the average small business owner out there. It's just a tale of the son of a rich man who is bold enough to gamble. Even if he loses, he still got a fall back. I repeat, there is nothing to learn from the story.

For those who are too lazy to read...
The key highlights below...

1. Get yourself a good mentor.
2. Trust your instincts based on a carefully thought out plan.
3. Work with the very best people you can afford and attract.
4. Failures and Successes are not the end themselves...just the means to...

The biggest tragedy from this post is not that he didn't win the bid...it will be the youths who will be too lazy to read this or just say oh..he could pull all these strings because his dad is this and that...

Even if we cannot choose the circumstances of our beginning in life...we have all it takes to define how our lives turn out...

Sir, kindly point out 3 to 5 points of lessons from the epistle. It'll do us all some good.

The only lesson I've learnt is "nearly doesn't win the acquisition". I imagined what the winner of the acquisition would have written.

I don't have to break down everything for you. This economic recession that a lot of Nigerians are experiencing throws up a lot of opportunities.

For instance, since the price of imported rice has risen, a smart investor would go and invest in the local rice chain. Seek out local rice producers and get the price per bag. Contact nearby restaurants and bulk buyers and promise to supply them at wholesale price with the option of payment on delivery. Even if you advertise local rice on NL, you are sure of plenty customers.

Instead of benefitting from the opportuinty above, they prefer to drink N10 garri and use it to insult Buhari on NL.

Let me tell you a true story.

Sometime ago during the telecoms boom in Nigeria, an very smart Nigerian who I respect so much formed a company called Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services (EMTS). He put the basic corporate structures on ground and ran it as a startup.

Subsequently, he approached some Arab investors to invest in his company. These Arab investors were impressed in his company that they decided to buy a part of it. Today, that company was Etisalat Nigeria and he owned 40% of Etisalat Nigeria.

If you think you are too young, go and read up the story of the guy behind Sujimoto Construction.

Don't make the mistakes your fathers made. Seek out opportunities and take advantage of them.

Lesson 1. As a business owner, it is sometimes best to follow your instincts when making strategic business decisions rather than relying solely on experts opinion

Lesson 2. Never be afraid to share your ideas with close friends and families, you never can tell where that "win factor" needed to enhance your ideas may come from.

Lesson 3. Never allow ego or pride to cloud your judgement when doing business.

Not a big fan of the man, but I think it was an excellent piece.

Let me indulge you a bit.

Believe in your instincts
When someone has a price, buy him so far as you know you can get something out from him.
Do away with pride, help is always closer than you think.

Go and read the article again to pick more lessons for yourself.

This is a brilliant read. Never saw Paddy in this light. People always referred to him as the 'oloriburuku' of the family but this interview makes him sound like a real business intellectual.

Why do i have this feeling that he is trying to get a pat on the back or prove to society how smart he is or prove to society that he is not a daddy's boy?? Every business man has once in his life backed a deal that didn't sail through and they never made a fuss out of it. Dangote and Femi Otedola didn't sail through with their Blue Star Consortium backed by Tony Elumelu, Cecilia Ibru, Jim Ovia and others.

Now in retrospect, Nearly does not kill a bird!!! In big deals, there's no second place. It's a winner takes all game. I understand he was trying to stay within his circle of competence which is within the oil and gas industry. But with the kind of money and circle of friends he has, he would have just bought out or back a tech startup and ride the waves.

Update: Now for those that may have opposing views, i have read and re-read the article time and again. Aside the euphoria of the write-up, i observed the "I" factor. He credited himself too much, trying too hard to make us understand how hard he is. You paid your team thousands of dollars and you don't want to listen to them, you would have gone it all alone and save your money.

2. He lacks personal business experience. He got too emotionally attached to the deal. If there's one thing every businessman knows, it's that there's always another deal opportunity coming.

He had kept this thing away from people over 4 years ago but decided to write about it and here you trying to pull him down for whatever reason... have you ever shared your own failure? Give the guy some break please because we can learn from him, including you!
