How to get a job: the perfect guide

2017 saw a lot of layoffs and many of us are left wondering how to rejoin the labour market, considering its teeming numbers. Here are some tips to guide you as given by Scott Dobroski, a career expert.

1. Focus on the required skill set

Don’t just search for vacancies based on the title. You never know, the job that requires your skillset just might have a different title. So, identify your skill set and match them to what employers need.

2. Use online resources

Go through the websites of companies that require your skill set to see if there might be any openings. Don’t just wait for ads. Also, sign up for job search sites to help you narrow down your search.

3. Save options for the future

While doing your research, you might find some opportunities that you are not particularly interested in but are related to your field. Save them. Bookmark the site or download the application so that you can have a plan B when plan A that you were really banking on falls through.

4. Tailor your CV

Have multiple CVs so that your qualifications, skill set that is related to each job opportunity will be what you state. This is not about lying. State real skills that are valuable to the company that you are applying to.

5. Write a cover letter

Even if the company does not request for one, still write it. It states why the company should offer you but does not repeat what is already in your CV so avoid that mistake. Also, make it as brief as possible.

6. Ask your interviewer questions

Don’t just answer their questions. Read up on the company beforehand and ask a couple of questions to show you are interested and proactive.
