Redmi 5 plus Review - 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 4,000mAh (non-removable)

The Redmi 5 plus should clearly have been the Note 5, a successor of the Redmi Note 4, however Xiaomi wanted a clean slate. The fifth generation is making an attempt to shake things up and therefore the New Look clearly demanded a brand new name. So, Xiaomi retired the Note brand promoting the plus from a mere qualifier to a proper name. The phablet lives on regardless, and goes all-in with a wide 6" screen.

'Tis the season of tall screens and Xiaomi is the next maker to travel 18:9 within the midrange yet. both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 plus have wide screens and both build on the predecessor's 5.5" diagonal with 5.7" and 5.99" respectively. The Redmi 5 plus might have received a fairly obvious upgrade, however that is nearly all that is new. The 5 plus keeps the snapdragon 625 chip and 4,000mAh battery of the Redmi Note 4. The previous 5MP selfie camera stays too, while the rear cam currently has larger pixels however smaller aperture.

The Redmi 5 Plus comes wrapped in an all-red cardboard box. Just as nearly every single Redmi before it, the 5 Plus is bundled with a 10W charger (5V/2A) and a microUSB cable. Xiaomi also provides a transparent rubber case, but we almost missed it as it was packed with the quick start guides, which no one cares about, right?

The Redmi 5 Plus brings a single new feature over the Redmi Note 4, the wide screen. We can see how it may not be enough to justify upgrading, so Redmi Note 4 owners might as well decide to sit tight and wait for Nougat. Everyone else looking for a reasonably priced phablet might want to give the 5 Plus a good look.
