When people throw this matter up for debate,we quickly forget about cultural & psychological differences.....People should separate emotions from this & see it for what it is, Not all those companies have been mismanaged, the business model is alien to the Nigerian mentality..

The fact of the matter is that majority still prefer to "SEE" what they are buying before they part with cash..

How many people shop online? Shops , supermarkets , roadside sellers dot everywhere....

And most important of all, online shopping is a bit more costly & room for haggling/bargaining isn't there.....

They will continue to try but I know for sure I'd rather take a trip to computer village to pick a phone than buy online when I'm not sure I'd get what I ordered & return won't be a nightmare in case it goes south...

I agree with you. Plus, some level of dishonesty don enter the thing. I hear of people who order something and get something abysmally inferior from most of these platforms.

Truth of the matter is, trust is a big issue in shopping and paying online in Nigeria. And it affects both the buyer and seller.
Nigerians are open to trying new things, even shopping online as well, But the general fear is, a customer is afraid if he pays online, he will either be scammed or the item won't come as advertised, plus the hassles of returns and refunds etc.

On the merchant side, he is concerned if he ships based on pay/cash-on delivery, the customer may change his/her mind, not pick calls which results in abandoned orders, or in some cases rob their delivery agent of the cash gathered for the day. The cost of shipping and returning abandoned orders without closing the sales is high for merchant to bear, day-in-day-out. Imagine shipping without guarantees.

Both sides have valid concerns, but pay/cash-on-delivery only addressed the customers concerns but comes at a cost to the seller as mentioned above.

A reliable escrow service is the only way to protect the interest of both sides. https:payscrow.net solves that problem once and for all.

Buyer makes payment, payment is secured in escrow, seller is notified of the order and payment, that way, he can ship with 100% assurance that order won't be abandoned, as buyer has shown commitment. Seller only gets paid when buyer confirms delivery, everything is automated.

No hassles, no one is chasing anyone. Don't take my word for it, check https://payscrow.net for yourself and see how its suitable for your business, whether you sell physical or digital goods.

Thank you. Three different times, fake or substandard items (phone, SD cards and battery) were sold to me on Jumia. Shipping charge was as high as N1,700 at a point.

Inaddition to the highlighted points, in terms of pricing, e-commerce in Nigeria has not proven to be competitive with offline stores.

When you make a price comparison, you will discover that the you can walk into a store and obtain the same item conveniently at almost the same price.
Your order might even turn out to be substandard. And you can't get your money back, you can only get voucher.

Sm times, I wonder what Nigerian grown brands are doing wrong. Bfor now, I used to say I don't see any Nigerian company lasting over a single generation... Regrettably... I think it's getting worst. Now, most companies don't even reach the 10year mark.

I refuse to totally believe it's the environment joh. I think we as a people dnt hv what it takes to go thru the rigours of growing a business. We find that most often than not, we grow (blow) too quickly before we really hv time to establish a culture, a long term vision for said brand. Before u knw it... We are trying to diversify, we trying to "belong", the company start forming what it is not.

An example.. I read a post here yesterday, where smone was complaining about Linda ikejis blog. I smiled, coz I kind of saw it coming. No sooner has she "blown", way before she really carved a niche/ brand culture... Has she started diversifying, living the life, "giving back to community"

At best, the brand will outlive her for a couple of years, but not more... That's if the brand is lucky enough to last that long. (Yes.. luck - that's how most businesses in Nigeria blow anyways)

Similar story for HiTv, I'm wondering whether i shld mention TsTv sef?

Anyways, ... I dnt hv an MBA, I might just be wrong.

very good analysis

Good points! However, Nigeria is a business-killing environment, largely due to government policy somersaults and gymnastics. Even big businesses aren’t exempt and that’s why many big billion-naira businesses in Nigeria fold up after some years. It’s very expensive to run a growing business in Nigeria. Sooner or later the running costs catch up and outgrow the business growth, then the company runs down. Our government needs to do better for the business community. All they know how to do is tax businesses to death embarassed
I disagree with you on this. Many thriving businesses owners in Nigeria are dubious when it comes to declaration of profits for tax purposes. Many underdeclare, many don't pay taxes at all.

with all that you have mentioned, you forgot to include integrity.

Once a business looses its integrity, you are gone. take a visit to jumias facebook and Instagram handle and witness the unusual avalanche of unresolved queries, if you were a prospective customer, after reading those would you wish to shop with jumia ever again.

To succeed in online retailing, you need returning customers. In other words, you must continue to enjoy patronage from people who have had good experience shopping from your store. Trust and integrity are the pillars. Spending huge amounts of money on adverts without delivering value to the customer would amount to nothing in the long run. You would only get one-time customers, not returning customers.

There's money to be made from online retailing but you must have what is called "customer obsession". You must be customer obsessed and not product obsessed. If you're focused on the customer, you won't sell fake products and you will deliver on time.

This is what has kept my online bookstore going since August 2015. Check my siggy. Place an order and we will demonstrate how online retailing works.

The truth is Nigeria don't have a well market system. Government policies and regulations are planned to fail... Good road network, articulated and well define economy is essential to e-commerce business..

Billyonaire:
When business is sold, it does not mean they were not making profit. Announcing a lost has been one of the few strategies that venture capitalists who want to make massive profits at shortest possible time use to sell out the company, clean the books up without paying taxes.

Unlike Yahoo Yahoo, the thoroughly trained minds in businesses of this nature knows that if you must get off the government tax handcuffs, then you must declare bankruptcy of the company even though the company is doing well. Cos if you declare profit during the sales, you will pay huge after sales tax but to declare bankcrupty, you are not only covering your asss for cooking the previous books, but you also get tax rebates and do not even have to pay taxes in the next several years as new buyers.

Sometimes it is just change of names; Cash out, sell the structures to another set of your foreign partners and the fraud continues. Etisalat, now 9Mobile has been used as a special purpose vehicle of these schemes many times and people still believe their stories.

Nigeria has been profitable to Konga and Jumia, but they could cash out some billions if they are declared bankrupt and share the liability of the credit facilities with new friendly partners while pocketing chunks of the money.

This is the type of Yahoo Yahoo Nigerians need to learn.

Nigeria is just a heaven for these high level fraud because we have no government, no consumer protection mechanisms, no products and pricing controls, I mean, I do not see how any 'world class intellect' can not be a billionaire in this country.

One must go beyond common-sense to understand that these sales are fraudulent schemes to enrich the few guys with brains who pull these stunts.

The only plausible solution to all these stories that touch is a reliable escrow service. Get what you paid for or get your money back. Simple! For the seller, get assurance that the buyer is committed and will not abandon you. We are calling it the Nigerian ebay and it is Nigeria's number one escrow service and marketplace. See link below and in my signature for more details.

I agree with you. NIPOST played a role but from my inquiries and test runs, they are back and set to grow. You can ship anything anywhere within a week using their registered parcel service. Emphasis on registered. List your items on Nigeria's number one online escrow service and marketplace and transact with confidence. See link below and in my signature.
Re: The Rise And Fall Of Online Retail In Nigeria by JideAyo: 3:36pm On Feb 16, 2018
But you did not mention that is still going strong. I was reading a report that said that Jiji is the only online marketplace that have understood the secret formula to e-commerce in Nigeria and their exponential growth rate is one of the best in Nigeria right now. Some ignorant people tend to attack their business model but they seem to be the only company doing e-commerce the right way in Nigeria.

Revealed: WHERE IS THE CHEAPEST PLACE TO BUY FRESH FOOD ITEMS IN ABUJA.

It is not Wuse Market, it is not Garki Int. Market, No, it is not Karimo Market. Wrong again, it is not Nyanya market and it is definitely not Utako market.

The right answer is Belle.ng. Yes, that's right and surprisingly so. Take for instance, this Belle Full Indomie Noodles costs about #200 - #250 in other markets, but it is sold for as low as #130 here https://belle.ng/indomie-instant-noodles-belle-full-chicken-flavour . This giant snails costs between #450-#550 each in Wuse Market. Get it for just #199 on Belle.ng here
https://belle.ng/giant-snail-1-big-size .
This crate of eggs goes for between #1100-#1300 elswhere, get it for just #890 here https://belle.ng/egg-crate-of-30. This big, live catfish sells for #1300 elsewhere but buy it for just #700 here https://belle.ng/cat-fish-cut.

This Smoked Goat Head costs between #900-#1500 in other markets. Get it as low as #600 only on Belle.ng here https://belle.ng/goat-head-smoked.

There are more exciting offers in store. Enjoy the tour and please, don't fail to share this good news with your yard people.

I think I will choose the latter.
