Abuja is the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. It is the headquarters of many organisations and establishments in Nigeria. Abuja is one of the most beautiful cities in Nigeria as it was specifically constructed from scratch by the Federal Government. Most international and diplomatic meetings are held in Abuja and the city can be classified as one of the best in Nigeria considering the road, the hospitality centres and the security level. However, this is not all there is to know about Abuja, here are 5 other interesting things about the city.

1. Africa’s only purpose built capital city: In the whole of Africa, Abuja is the only capital city that was built from ground up solely for the purpose of being the capital city. Lagos was formerly the capital city of Nigeria before the Federal Government decided to relocate the capital city to Abuja because of its location and its ability to contain people from most ethnic groups in Nigeria.

2. Headquarters of ECOWAS: The Economic Community of West African States has its headquarters located in Abuja, the organisation which includes all the countries of the entire West Africa.

3. Constructed in the 1980s: Abuja currently is the newest city in Nigeria as construction for the city only began in the 1980s. The Federal Government executed the project of building a new capital city for Nigeria. Buildings and road network of Abuja were carefully planned out from the beginning.

4. High cost of living: Compared to other places in Nigeria, the standard of living in the capital city of Abuja can be quite expensive, especially the cost of renting an apartment.

5. Low crime rate: Abuja is one of the safest cities in Nigeria as the crime rate is relatively low compared to other cities. This might be as a result of the fact that it is the capital city of Nigeria and the number one citizen of Nigeria resides there.
