Employment Of Those Days In Nigeria Compared Now by Sunnyflex(m): 3:14am On Feb 28, 2018
One of the major macroeconomics problems of any NATION is the issue of tackling a monster called UNEMPLOYMENT which hitherto, has Bred poverty, increased crime rate, break up marriages, widen inequality gap, loss of social standing, to mention but few.
In Nigeria, it is also a major macroeconomic problem.

Education in Nigeria is all about acquiring certificate and what follow next, is having a white collar jobs which hitherto have benefited some fragments in the society and eluded many.

Today I will be discussing the reasons why Employment in the 70s, 80s and early 90s were predominantly available compared now in Nigeria, based on my own candid observation, thus, subject to criticism.
The reasons are:
1.The economy was mostly agrarian(Agriculture) and could compete favourably well with other currencies of the world due to its exportation of cash crops, food crops, hide and skin etc.Thereby encouraging employment in those days and making our Naira to be valued.

2. Corruption was relatively low in those days.Nepotism, cronyism etc was hardly known in those days.As a result, Graduate of the early 70s, 80s and even 90s benefitted maximally, as they were gainfully employed into their respective field of endeavor.

3.Also, the demand for labour force was greatly in Vogue due to its Human Capital Formation strategy.
The economy was still at its birth, trying to achieve economic growth and development, and therefore needed to harness its Natural resources optimally.
As a result, labour force were gainfully employed and paid handsomely.

Also, graduates were highly placed in their specialised field of academic studied.
Nothing like under-employment, unlike what we are seeing today.e.g A graduate of microbiology working in a bank or doing a menial job(mason)etc

In Nigeria today, the reverse is the case, based on what is enumerated above.

Education that is supposed to be an ASSETS to an individual and to the government, has been grossly under estimated.
The value attached to education and being a graduate have been lost and made a laughing stock. Our Universities are churning out thousands of graduates in there respective academic field, with little or no hope of securing job opportunities.

Also, this so-called Jet Age or information Technology Age, otherwise known as Globalization has not really augured well with the Less Developed Countries(LDCs) like ours.It has instead favoured the developed countries.
Lots of our jobs have been stolen away by this developed counterparts, as a result of the harmful effect on 'demonstration effects' on the part of our people.
The demand and preferences for foreign and ostentatious goods have hitherto hampered our economy to the lowest ebb, thereby causing depreciation of our national currency.

Furthermore, Capital Intensive Mode of Production has been esteemed highly more than the Labour Intensive Mode.It has resulted into structural unemployment in Nigeria.
Today in a banking industry, for instance, a lot of staff have been replaced with ATM gallery offices.
