50 Detective And Crime Shows That Were Shown On Nigerian Television In The 1970s And ‘80s.

These are 50+ detective and crime shows that were shown on Nigerian television in the 1970s and ‘80s. They contain police procedural series, spy shows and even a few super hero series.

One thing that stands out about this list is that it contains some of the most iconic theme songs in television history.

1) The Professionals (CI5)
Bodie & Doyle

There was no doubt in my mind that this would be the first series that I would post. This song! This amazing music!

15) Moonlighting

It’s very hard to define this series. They run a detective agency, so it must be a detective show, but there’s so much laughter that it must be a comedy show, but then there’s David (Bruce Willis) and Maddie (Cybill Shepherd), so it must be a romantic show. Well it’s all of the above and more. It even has a beautiful theme song by Al Jarreau.

21) Third Eye

This was one of the best detective series on the NTA. Olu Jacobs was a police detective (Idafe) who had a very special little helper that assisted him in unravelling the most difficult cases. His very intelligent little daughter, Uzie Idafe (Yomi Adeyemi-Wilson) would always provide a different perspective that would assist him in catching criminals (she often did this unknowingly).

The only flaw in this show was that the NTA continued to portray Yomi Adeyemi-Wilson as a Home Science pupil even when she had moved on to QC. The show started in 1989 when she was in primary 5 at Home Science Ikoyi and ended in 1994 when she was in form 4 at Queens College, but the NTA continued to portray her as a primary school kid throughout the show’s run.

Here’s Yomi Adeyemi-Wilson all grown up.

22) The Turning Wheel

Jab Adu (Modu) owns Modu Enterprises. One way or the other he keeps getting entangled in the rising crime rate in Nigeria. It could be his friend’s son that was arrested for possession of cocaine or some other crime that has caught his attention. As an upright and patriotic citizen, he tries to get at the root cause of the crime. This he does with the aid of his friend, Inspector Ben Alamu (later played by Enebeli Elebuwa). Modu’s clerk is Femi Jarrett (who acted with Jab Adu in Adio Family) and his messenger is the great Ihria Enakhimo. I watched The Turning Wheel in 1986, 87 and 88 on NTA and OGTV.

This is one of the benefits of NTA’s 40th anniversary, the Turning Wheel is now on YouTube.

Did not get to see most of those shows as an 80's kid....as the parents regarded them as 'dirty shows'

HOWEVER.....as an adult, I did get to watch the Sweeney, the Professionals, The Saint, and a few other classics while doing a PG course abroad....so did not miss out.

I did watch 'Third Eye' though.

And while I did not watch Van der Walk....I remember the music...also used to advertise KLM airlines back in the day....

NTA is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary and as part of the celebration, they are showing some of their classic shows and uploading them to YouTube immediately after. The two shows that I'm eagerly waiting for are Third Eye and Second Chance. I've been checking YouTube for those two shows every hour since yesterday.

Another show that I would like to see is Magana Jarice and they are going to show it on Sunday, so I expect that it should be on YouTube by Monday.
