Okay.

I'll also assume either of you or both of you (i.e. his parents) have a post graduate degree. Right?

Does he limit himself to eating just a few types of food (usually carbohydrates like rice, indomie, etc.) or is his diet well-rounded (eats everything from fruits, to garri, beans, yam, etc, without being forced)?

Secondly, I don't want to cast aspersions on the doctors in FMC Owerri or to , but non-physical developmental issues apart from autism are still far from being commonly diagnosed in Nigeria and its a broad spectrum of issues with autism at the very end. In other words, autism is easily diagnosed, so if they say he doesn't have it he probably doesn't, but other developmental issues are not. You might need to see another specialist
.

He takes all of them in good measure.

Speech delay, also known as alalia, refers to a delay in the development or use of the mechanisms that produce speech.

Causes
At times, speech delay and impairment is caused by a physical disruption in the mouth such as a deformed frenulum, lips, or palate.
Lovely... I guess u work with acceleration therapy
Autism spectrum disorders, childhood apraxia, Auditory processing disorder, prematurity, cognitive impairment and hearing loss

Therapy

Reading to the child regularly

Use of questions and simple, clear language

Positive reinforcement in addition to patience

Music therapy

For children that are suffering from physical disorder that is causing difficulty forming and pronouncing words, parents and caregivers suggest using and introducing different food textures to exercise and build jaw muscles while promoting new movements of the jaw while chewing.

There are several factors that contribute in their speech such as:

Waiting until the child has finished speaking

Refraining from excessive correction and from disproportionate emphasis on correction (lest the child's desire to avoid correction lead him/her to simply shut down speech-production efforts as a crude means of avoiding error generation)

Providing praise when warranted

Approaching the child as a communicator partner

Being an appropriate speaking model

Exposing the child to literature

Limiting exposure to television, especially during efforts at parent-child communication

Asking questions

Repeating words

Providing explanations and drawing conclusions

Callmemike you see what the poster above wrote was what I was trying to communicate to you but I don't like assumptions and making it seem that the owner of the thread is not intelligent. You will be surprised.

I have an experience similar to that. A family had their baby in October. Fast forward to first week of December, the baby started dropping off weight instead of gaining. Only one doctor that came from US for routine checks in her private hospital finally found what was wrong with the baby.

This is after the couple had gone to LUTH, LASUTH and Eko Hospital.

The experience was horrible for the couple and that was their first baby.

So mate, seek a second opinion. There are good hospitals in the South-East and South-South. Explore them. Else find your way to Lagos.

The name of the clinic is Outreach Women and Children's Clinic.. Google them up. They specialize on women and children.

One of the former MDs works with a state in the South-East. I'll make contact and forward her details to you if you are interested.

Thanks a lot for the optimism. We need it. Moreso he hears commands and carries out instructions. He is a sweet kid. Just his speech is lacking

Don't overwhelm the kid with tests, therapy and dissertations. He is okay just a very late developer. There is a kid in my neighbourhood born 2013 just started rushing words now with no clear pronounciation while his playmate of just 2+yrs speaks clearly like a 5yr old but the boy's speech is now improving by himself. DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT KIDS

It doesn't mean that his kid is autistic.

Rokafela:
My son is 5 years old and he doesn't speak either. He has been diagnosed as Autistic have a look at this link:

https://www.google.co.uk/urlsa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=8&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiJjIGXwNjZAhVKW8AKHTUJAhsQFgh4MAc&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.autism.org.uk%2Fabout%2Fwhat-is.aspx&usg=AOvVaw2aK5ijU0vgMohHR4kwOuOQ

and see whether it is helpful. ASD generally effects our ability to socialise and communicate. There isn't enough support in Nigeria so you will have to do everything yourself. Trust me people with ASD are superhuman with the right support your child will be great

I will try to be very brief. My son is some months shy of 4 years old. However he has not started talking. When he was almost 2 years we took him to FMC owerri for examination. The result said he was ok. Unsatisfied we went after some months. They referred us to the International Speech and Hearing Centre Enugu.

There the result was that his hearing is limited. They said we should come for a reevaluation when he is past 3 years to see if his hearing has improved or if he needs a hearing aid. But we were advised to enroll him into a school to increase his interactions. The problem with this then was his repeated bouts of illness after each two weeks in school. We tried homeschooling him for a term and half afterwards. This term we have enrolled him into a new, regular school and he has adapted just fine.

Between this period, we have visited other hospitals for evaluation and they said it is ok. That he is just a late developer.

We just went for a reevaluation and they said he does not need a hearing aid and that his hearing is very OK now. They recommended a professional speech therapist to help him pronounce words, since all he does is just babbles. He captures things fast and can act out a full cartoon movie.

So please if any info is available about a speech therapist in Owerri, it will be appreciated. Other advices are also welcome.

Mods, please help me push this to the front page. A child needs your help and i believe in your epatant care. Thank you
It's well, I hope you find the speech therapist soon, my daughter is just 3 months to her 3rd birthday and she is non verbal , her doctor ruled out altism too cos she is a social butterfly, takes her command very well, very good with pussles, like my iPad and can play games and can mimic her nursery rhymes and dance to it.She goes on errands oh and is already potty trained. A whole lots of things kids her age has not even grasped. But verbal communication is very little, just little words like, take, okay, hello etc. she just started with a speech therapist a week ago, We are hoping for improvement by her 3rd birthday so she can start pre school with her mates come this September. I wish we acted earlier, people were telling us to leave her alone to develop at her pace but there is nothing wrong with helping them along.

just be patient and train him yourself. My nephew who is now a big boy was once like that. In fact, his own case was all round, he was slow in everything. Crawling, walking and talking and we didn't even do all this things you doing but in the end he caught up with his mate and even surpassed them. You have work to do yourself... do train him yourself while you're in search of an ENT. All the best! Tell your baby I Love him.

You are very kind, thank you

shocked

exactly.my first son was almost two yrs and could say only daddy. We live in a very quiet estate which i think contributed greatly to the late speech issue.

with this in mind,i took him to my mum where his cousins who came for holiday could interact with him.My husby refused but now he easily recommends this idea to ppl in same situation.
just one mth with them and it was like his mouth tap was opened including the fact thst he hated food then.we stayed for four mths and believe me when i tell you that he makes complete sentences and came top in his class.

Even now we beg him not to eat anymore cos its like he wants to eat everytime nw.

No drugs,no therapist,no educational toys just comm with his peers.

Exactly! Speech therapists n co will just collect your money

Lastly, in everything keep an open mind. Different people will come at you with different opinions and viewpoints. Some outlandish, some frankly stupid, some with a grain of truth wrapped in nonsense, some commonsensical, etc. You need to be able to listen and sort them out. The internet is a very helpful resource, you will find that there is a lot of help there. You also need to find someone hardheaded and down to earth who is having or has had the same issue and compare notes with them. THAT IS FUNDAMENTAL, you simply cannot do this alone, especially being in Owerri, where these types of services are limited, if present at all. I found that out. Look into it and jisike. O ga- arikwa nwa'akri mma.

Okay, I didn't get to see this thread earlier and wishing I commented before now, I had same issue with my nephew, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your kid, he's just an introvert, you will have to limit his computer usage, gaming with your phone, take techs very far from him and introduce Barney, download as much as you can and start introducing him to it, give him six months and thank me later.

Your observation might be right but you need to draw the op out gradually. Some are afraid to admit it openly. It takes courage. smiley
I do not think it's autism as only the speech seems to be a source of concern. For autism to be suspect, there would need to impairment of understanding speech as well as using it to communicate as well as difficulty with social interaction alongside other behavioural issues.

My son had same issue. He's snapping out of it.Engage in conversations with him..Get him to communicate often. He will be just fine.
We are lucky.Research has shown that when kids with speech impairment eventually snap out of it(which of course they will),they become fire..
So don't worry. You have an extraordinary kid there.

OP, please be at rest and trust God for your son. My daughter had similar delay in speaking and I was so concerned despite my wife being a medical doctor.

We made her start school very early in the US yet no change, however she could sing from morning till evening. My daughter only picked up talking when her younger sister was born and started talking ahead of her. To cut the long story short... my daughter is now a talkative...she is 8 yrs old now, still sings alot and plays the Piano very well...and of course now hyper social...

Hello,
Please be careful with your boy.
My son had the same, its a developmental issue.
Yes he could be said to be Autistic but Autism has a broad spectrum (from level 1 to 11).
Your son would probably be on the low spectrum.
In Lagos there is a very good speech therapy clinic, they helped my son with tremendous improvement.
You can contact them, maybe they might be able to link you with a professional near you.
Check there website

All I could tell my wife now is to be patient as she is always down with thought of different things as my little twins of 2years 2months have also followed suit. Please we need help!
