Chicks can be hand reared to adulthood easily.
The mother hen could have died from a virus common amongst fowls. Attacked by a predator and died as a result of its injuries. Attacked by a rooster who was trying to mate with the hen. Bear in mind hens are very territorial and will defend their brood even if it costs the hen her life.

I once saw a vid on Facebook where a cockerel attempted to rape a hen. I don't know if it was as a result of over exertion or excitement, but as the cockerel mounted the hen, it just tipped over, gave a weak crow, tried flapping its wings and then died. I kid you not!
