Taye Taiwo wins title with Marseille

Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo won the French Ligue 1 title with Olympic Marseille on Wednesday night with a 3-1 win over Elderson Echiejile's Rennes.

The victory, coupled with Auxerre's loss earlier in the day to Olympic Lyon, ensured that Marseille claimed their first title since 1992, when they had a certain Abedi Pele.

Argentina's Gabriel Heinze got Marseille the perfect start with a goal on 4 minutes, but the champions-in-waiting were soon pegged back by Jimmy Briand's goal on 38 minutes.

Mamadou Niang and Lucho Gonzalez scored within a minute of each other to confirm Marseille's first title in 18 years.

Taiwo came in as a 57th minute sub for goal scorer Heinze.
