Dozens of Russian diplomats who were expelled from the US by President Trump last week were seen arriving back in Moscow on Sunday.

In total, 117 people were sent back to Russia from the US.

The first plane departed from Washington, carrying 46 diplomats and their families.

The others took off from New York.

Before they left on Saturday, the group from Washington were waved off by crowds of friends who gathered at the Russian embassy.


As they departed the embassy on Saturday, a woman held up a Russian flag in a sign of patriotism before leaving the US.

The crowds of people who had gathered to say goodbye to the Russians were pictured walking away from the embassy afterwards.


An Ilyushin II-96 aircraft carrying expelled Russian nationals is pictured arriving in Moscow on Sunday from the US.

It was one of two aircraft which brought 171diplomats and their families back to Russia after they were thrown out of America.



Once they had landed, the Russians were taken out of the airport on buses and in cars.

None of the individuals were pictured.

Britain alleges Russian involvement in the March 4 nerve agent poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the English city of Salisbury.

Moscow adamantly denies that and has ordered tit-for-tat expulsions of Western diplomats.

On Saturday, officials were seen closing down the US Consulate in St Petersburg.

Sixty US diplomats have been told to leave Russia along with another 90 from other countries.

Their expulsion was in retaliation.


The US flag was removed from the outside of the building and staffers were pictured taking equipment out from the offices inside to be placed into vans.

In St. Petersburg on Saturday, Consul General Thomas Leary was pictured overseeing the removal of staff and equipment from the US consulate.


The US and Britain are not alone in asking the diplomats to leave.


In total, 21 countries including Germany, France, Canada, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Estonia, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Macedonia have vowed to take the same step after the Skriplas' poisoning.


The UK claims it has proof Russia was behind the poisoning which left both victims in critical condition.
