Members of the House of Representatives on Thursday raised the alarm over a sharp rise in drug abuse among youths in the North and demanded urgent measures to be put in place by regulatory agencies.

The lawmakers said Codeine and Tramadol were drugs abused daily by youths, because they were easily accessed over the counter. Members noted that consumers hid under the guise of drinking codeine to treat cough, but were in the real sense abusing the substance. A member from Sokoto State, Mr. Abdulsamad Dasuki, who moved a motion on the development, sought a ban on the sale of codeine and tramadol over the counter across the country.

He said the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control must introduce tougher regulatory measures to contain what could become a major national crisis. Dasuki stated that boys and girls were already abusing the drugs freely and becoming addicts in the process.

His motion was titled, “Need to Stop Abuse by Banning the Sale of Codeine and Tramadol over the Counter and Address its Abuse in Northern Nigeria." For example, members said statistics indicated that in Kano and Jigawa States alone, three million bottles of codeine were consumed by youths daily.

NAFDAC is working with the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA) and National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development(NIPRD) to arrest the increasing abuse of these cough syrups in Nigeria. NAFDAC is embarking on massive public enlightenment campaign on the dangers of abuse of codeine, containing medicines in Nigeria. The Agency has put in place strategy to limit the supply and distribution of codeine containing cough syrups, in Nigeria. Prescribers and dispensers are encouraged to prescribe and dispense these cough syrups rationally. Consumers are merely advised to take codeine containing cough syrups, on prescription by health care professionals, but pharmacists are not compelled to sell the cough syrups only on prescription, like they do for Tramadol and Valium/Diazepam. However, most pharmacists restrict the sale of codeine-laced cough syrups to just 1 or 2 bottles per patient.

In the North, there have been reports of youths requesting to buy a whole carton of codeine laced syrups, from chemists and pharmaceutical outfits. Some ethical pharmacists refuse to sell such quantities to them. I mean how serious is that cough, that you would need a whole carton to cure it?

...but the prevelance of drug intake in the south east is not like In the north... Next time don't use the word "Almajiri" for an ethnic group, the word Almajiri was coined out from the Arabic word, "Al-muhajirun" which means a learner(student).

Two days ago a man named, Ojukwu was caught by the police at Ojuwoye Market, Mushin, Lagos for producing fake drinks. Some Igbo were caught in Asia, Europe and America for peddling drugs.
