That is exactly why I came on here and did other searches to find out information, it is too bad there aren't more women and men who will research stuff before following through with sending funds and other things to those folks, Thank you to those who replied for your help, I am glad I am smart enough to ask around first, God Bless You All

toshmann, are you implying that I encouraged him  cry if so, it's like am undergoing what he did all over. I grew up as a military brat,  grin (just a nickname for military kids). i was a tough girl while growing up, but i refused to slap him or whatever. maybe i was afraid, I didn't fight Dr. U.  so if you're implying that i encouraged him, that's sad and a wrong assumption sad. I was a girl of 15years by then mind you. well, i didn't fight him, i heard of stories of rape etc,  as young and confused as i was then, i rushed out of his office. I never encouraged him, nor accept his advances. so don't talk as if you are blaming me. I was raised well okay  grin. You wouldn't understand because you weren't in my shoe. The best I did back then was to leave his office.

All the same, I thank God for a well lived youth unspoilt by men/guys.  grin cheesy wink
Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by toshmann(m): 5:14pm On Apr 22, 2007
considering ur age then, i wont blame you. but if you were a mature lady, say about 23yrs and above, i would give you a portion of the blame. though the stupid Dr takes 90% of the blame. but for a 15yr old, i would give the Dr 100% of the blame. he should be in jail for attempted paedophilic manifestations and he should be suspended by the nigerian medical council but u see, he was not reported so no investigation and no punishment.

Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by ajetii(m): 7:22pm On May 06, 2007
I am sorry, i also disagree. Doctors in Nigeria are well qualified, and really knows their onions. see them outside Nigeria you find out that they are only limited by facilities. Lack of skills and expertise are different from lack of facilities. I think the writer must make distinction between the two.
Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by spoilt(f): 10:21pm On May 06, 2007
we really dont question their qualifications. its their sympathy levels, customer service issues and sensitivity to patients rights and privacy that is in question. just so you know.
Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by 21stccDr(m): 11:07am On May 08, 2007
this is 21st century dr.

As a public enlightenment, I hope to educate readers on what it takes to be a doctor in nigeria.

A fact states that a small percentage of any population is made of highly brainy individuals. And most of those who belong to this class end up as doctors. Medical Course and Practise is not like Information Technology where people deal with machines and some virtual computer codes. Doctors Deal with LIFE, error is unacceptable so every effort has to go into learning the nitty gritty of human existence, The reason the course is hard and practise is harder.

Take a time out and see one of the TV Medical Series around, "grey's anatomy preferably". You will realise that life as a doctor is more than the seeming prestige that is attached to it.

As a Doctor in our 9ja I would be faced with the following challenges (I am still in school)
LACK OF FACILITIES
POOR PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION
INAPPROPRIATE WAGE COMPARED TO SOCIAL STATUS AND SERVICE RENDERED
etc.

While I take a time out before I elaborate on these, just keep at the back you mind that 9ja doctors are realy trying.

1.u forgot to add fake drugs,
2. non compliance by patients,
3.late visits to hospitals by patients who seek medical attention after they have tried all sorts of concotion from stand 24 trade fairs
4.prepare to work at night with candles
5. patients being brought to hospitals when they are almost dead.
6. get ready to be a death certificate specialists.
7. if you look very young, get ready to fight with nurses who wont "take instructions from a kid"
8. On a lighter note, get ready for the younger nurses who will invade your "hormonal privacy" . . . . grin
9. get ready to watch patients die when a little oxygen may save life but is not available.
10. get ready for strike
11. get ready to be abused
12. get ready for abnormally high expectations from an ignorant public who think the Dr is a god.
13 . . . . . .to be continued cool

Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by Ace(m): 2:45pm On May 18, 2007
oh and 21stccDr, Grey's Anatomy is about as unrealistic a show on healthcare as I can imagine. Its basically a soap opera. ER or some of the reality med shows are much more realistic IMHO.

is it not a legitimate thing to want to be a Dr?

@ace
i have stayed with Drs in naija
Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by DisGuy: 12:21am On May 19, 2007
well not for the wrong reasons. many people want to be seen as Dr smart blah blah

I wouldnt like to be a doctor when i know very well the pay is shyte, the facilities for doing my job aint there and people cant even pay me for the job

how can you be a doctor in a country where you have to ask sick people if they have registered, instead of asking them what their problems are?
Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by toshmann(m): 12:35am On May 19, 2007
not like they have more choices. if they had thier way, they'll leave the country to practice outside naija.
about asking for registration instead of treating ASAP, well, it's unfortunate. but blame the economy as most Drs will complain that when they treat 1st the patients run away after recovery. but i'm not sure they'll do that in emergency cases.

but if you go to govt hospitals you may get treatment 1st without much hussle if it is an emergency. . . . if Drs are not on strike grin

Its rather bad to say so much evil of naija doctors. Bad eggs are seen in all professions and at every spot on the surface of this planet earth; so why crucify naija doctors.

Given what is available, naija doctors are great. Its so sad that people are eternally bound to those ugly incidences while they readily forget heroic acts of doctors battling to save their lives and that of their loved ones.

For any of us here who has basis for comparison (living or havin stayed in any 1st world country) instead of complaining you can put back into the country say by picking a hospital in your locality of origin and do something there. If you are a doctor you can do more,
Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by karlken(m): 2:30pm On Nov 10, 2007
A professional like a Dr,who swore to the Hippocratic oath, who a lot of respect and dignity is attached to his title and person and who patients trust and revere should not exhibit such low moral standards as to sexually abuse not only mature females but teenagers entrusted to them for medicare. If anyone falls victim of such, the person should be bold enough litigate not only for personal psychological satisfaction but for protection of the unsuspecting future victim.Stories abound of Nig.Drs harrasing female patients as if its rife.In practice,it's rather very rare. The exaggerated statistics has made every female wary such that attitudes of kindness and acceptable patient are often misinterpreted!Drs in public service are accused of laxity.Paucity of funds, current equipment, standard drugs and poor remuneration are results of poor governance not professional inefficiency or negligence on the part of the Dr.Private practitioners are bound by rules of their clinic.Note that some ungrateful patients may have pushed the Drs to assume a seemingly difficult stance! embarassed embarassed embarassed
Re: Doctors And Hospitals In Nigeria by karlken(m): 2:47pm On Nov 10, 2007
People may not know this;Nigerian Drs excell in every country they find themselves. Many Nig Drs are members of hundreds of international medical bodies. So many have worn laurels in medical and non-medical competitions.Practicing medicine in a country like Nigeria can be as challenging as ever.No constant electricity (when some reagents and drugs require certain temperatures to remain patent),fake and adulterated drugs and equipments, substandard paramedical manpower, poor salaries, lack of continued proffesional development(CPD) and curruption are some millitating factors against standardised practice.A lot of family and social expectations weigh the average Dr dowm yet the Job stress is not commensurate with the pay nor status yet a Dr buys from same market with others!.Take or leave, more there are very many wonderful and excellent Nig Drs out there! smiley smiley

I was just wondering if anyone has heard of a Dr. Michael Leyden or a hospital named Salvation Christian Hospital located in Owerii,IMO State Nigeria.
You see he sent me some info via- e-mail and I was trying to find out if either he or the hospital was really lagitimate(real).

With respect to the writer below, my question is: What did you do to the doctor? The problem with most Nigerians is that you have a problem with an establishment, person etc, instead of addressing the issue properly, you just whine and complain and move on. Did you ever think to report the doctor and the hospital to the medical board, instigate a law suit etc, By doing this, the hospital is either shut down or the erring practitioners licence is revoked, and YES, IT HAPPENS IN NIGERIA. By not complaining, you are putting other peoples lives at risk.

I know of good hospitals and I know of hospitals that where canned because of lack of professionalism. You are luck you did not gangrene from your dead baby, hope you recovered from the experience. I am also shocked to hear that women in hospitals are beaten and shouted on while in labour. That is why its important to go to the good hospitals than the road side hospitals.

Please report all misdemenour to the hospital boards and also go to the papers and talk about it, at least, if nothing happens, the whole world knows,

Cheers,

Not all doctors are bad but i had the misfortune of visiting one hospital in owerri because i had some complication during my pregnancy. The stupid pride and rude doctor was recieving a call while working on a woman i don't know what he was doing on her but i remember he was doing somthing in her womb cause her legs were spread apart he did not cover his stupid mouth and the woman had to wait while he was jisting and laughing in front of her whatever he recieved 3 diferent calls from friends calling to say hi.The same doctor ignored a woman in labour for like 5 hours because the woman was scared of having a C/S he said she was wasting his time and left her unattended she was shouting and crying saying he should plse come i couldnt sleep from her shouts as imy room was close to the labour room when he was satisfied that she had learnt her lesson and do the operation the baby had died.In my case i was bleeding a little and the bastards couldnt carry out a scan because they usually do scan on thursdays and tuesdays so if bleeding starts on friday you have to wait till Tuesday to get a scan. The scan revaeld that the baby was dead which now i wonder if they were correct.I wish i knew where i was i wouldnt have stayed i was verry sick i was taken there unconcious and dint know about their weaknesses untill it was too late.To crown it all they say the doctor is 1 of the best gynea in the state yea yea

kpele oh on your bad experience.kpele.

ive heard all kinds of horror stories about hospitals in naija. its scary. especially from women having babies. some of those stories are so shocking. you get no attention, no privacy, no compasion, no nothing. they seem to be immune to what you are going through. even if salaries are not paid its no reason to take out frustration on innocent victims patients.

my friends had their babies in naija. they told me how they were beaten and hit and yelled at to push. i could not believe it because when a woman is in labor she is vulnerable and almost at the point of death and should be treated with great compassion. its advisable for a loved one to always be with you during that time so you can keep an eye on what they are doing.

i had my baby here and i couldn't have asked for anything better. the nurses and doctors were sympathetic, compassionate and kind. no one beat me up during labour.

this isnt to say that we don't have good doctors and nurses. but these complaints arent one- off things , they are becoming too rampant and common. its almost like a norm.

its rather cruel to say any defamatory thing about doctors in nija, this folks work tirelessly day and night and receive peanuts, yet they continue, and to anwswer the guy who thinks people go to medschool cos of the title, wrong!its actually like a calling, something deep inside that seeks to make sick people better and make them fine.its only unfortunate that the status of the practice is in the same quagmire the entire country is in,
Patients in nigeria dont expect to see doctors, they want miracle workers, maybe we are so used to mullahs and preachers that we think science should work the same way sorry it doesnt!
And you know whats more, nigerians expect to see you grey haired as a doc and if you arent, they think you are just some brat without brains, its so disheartening when you are explaining to a patient and they dont listen just because you havent got grey hair,
we can catalogue on and on but we also need to realise that docs need to explain things to patients at all points of management, this might help carry them along.
As for those who say such stuffs, bad eggs exist in every profession and its like someone saying somewhere that female bankers are prostitutes! That is a sure falacy,
lets give credit to those who toil, despite dehumanizing conditions of service!
