Luke 11 told a story on how the deciples of Jesus asked him to teach them how to pray just like John the Baptist taught his.

My question is why did they ask him and not just imitate how he did it?

Because they looked into the future and saw Africans especially Chosen, Mountain of Fire,e.t.c jumping up and down like monkeys, Commanding Holy Spirit like their boy,Then they decided to ask Jesus to teach them/Us the right way to pray.

Although Africans never Passed after learning

Simply because there's a RIGHT and WRONG way of asking from your FATHER

The disciples were aware that in Jesus Christ, God's New Law, and Covenant, they would have to learn to pray a different way from how they used to pray directly to YHWH the God of Israel, whom they were no longer able to pray directly to as followers of Jesus Christ.

Because he never prayed in their presence until then instead he will leave them and walk away to a distance before praying.
This is in line with what God commanded in the prophets:

The one refusing to listen to the law —Even his prayer is detestable. Proverbs 28:9

So Jesus must not pray for or with them unless they're willing to act on what he is teaching them that's what God commanded Jeremiah @ Jeremiah 11:14
That's why Jews thought Jesus is Jeremiah who returned to them! Matthew 16:14

But after his disciples have proved to be loyal to him and faithful to all the things he taught them Jesus prayed for and with them! John 17:8-9
