HARMATTAN AND POULTRY PRODUCTION

Harmattan is a dry and dusty weather which is observed between the end of November and the middle of March. It is usually characterized by a cold, dry, dusty wind in the evenings until the early hours of the mornings.
The reason of this characterized weather condition during harmattan is because during this period, there is little amount of water in the atmosphere (low humidity) with this, stuffiness increases and thus leads to spread of infections or diseases generally.

Harmattan wind is considered to be a natural hazard because during its passage, the wind picked up dust particles and could push large quantities of sand, provoking the spread of wind-borne diseases.
During this period, chicken easily come down with all sorts of pulmonary (lung) diseases, which really compromise the respiratory processes and eventually hamper poultry performance”.

This harmattan period has various adverse effects on Human health and also that of Animal especially poultry, this triggers a lot of diseases. The most common health challenges in poultry during this period includes but not limited to common Cold, Eye problem, and catarrhal, pneumonia, nose Bleeding, Bronchitis, chronic respiratory disease and many other cold related health problems.

It is good for us to protect our birds from these infections in the spirit of making them stay healthy.

THE FOLLOWING HEALTHY PRACTICE CAN BE ADOPTED TO HELP SCALE THROUGH THIS PERIOD WITH EASE AND BETTER PERFORMANCE OF THE BIRDS.

1. Endeavour to supply plenty cool and fresh drinking water to the birds at all time to prevent dehydration. Basically, birds detest warm water as this increases the body temperature and hence lead to heat stress so ice block could be use in the afternoon to supply cool water.

2. Provision of additional watering space and drinkers will help the birds (Layers and Broilers on deep litter system) have more access to water without stress, shedding of the overhead water tanks will help prevent direct sunray reflection in water.

3. During the early hours of the day and late hours at night, ambient temperature always drops and induces cold; therefore, lightening should be made available to generate heat in the poultry house in order to increase the temperature to a suitable level.

4. Serving of required quantities of more energetic feeds (high density feed) to chickens to generate body heat very early in the morning and during the hotter part of the day, little or no feeds should be made available.

5. In the case where planting of carpet grasses is not visible around the pen house, wetting the surface of the ground with plenty water could also prevent wind from blowing dust and heat from the ground in the afternoon and evening. This will help to guide against dusty air filtered into the respiratory system of the birds.

6. Removal of cobwebs and cleaning of dusty nets should be a regular routine, the net can be cleaned using wet rag or foam or hand brush.
Care must be taken when carrying out this operation to avoid scaring and stressing the birds.

7. Avoid burning of bushes meters away from the farm to prevent respiratory problem among the flock and also prevent heated saturated air around.

8. Water containing enough anti-stress agents (vitamins) and also electrolyte should be provided to the chickens, these will serves as thermal regulator to regulate the body temperature (whether too cold or too hot), and enhance daily metabolism.

9. Sprinkling of cold water on rooftop and sometimes on the birds during the hotter part of the day with the use of acceptable sprinklers and sprayers and where foggers and fans are available in the pens will also help as coolant.

10. Stocking density also has to be put into consideration in order to avoid overcrowding as this can lead to easy spread of infectious diseases within the birds.
11. Adhering to all other Bio-security measures and using of good management practice will be of help to prevent and overcome challenges during this period of the year.

Finally, to prevent the incidents of burns, fire outbreaks and other related issues on our farms, the following should be done.

1. Switch off all electrical appliances on the farm after use.

2. Quench naked fire if any when not in use.

3.Check all wooden and replace bad ones to prevent building from collapsing.

4. The use of noise cover should be encouraged within the workers to ensure they stay healthy.

5. Ensure proper storage of inflammable substance like petrol on the farm.

6. Ensure your farm has at least one working fire extinguisher and also train at least two people how to use it.

While the broiler attains table size under 32-45 days (5-6 weeks), the Noiler male attain 2kg weight from 11-12weeks. Since their feed conversion ratio is not as high as that of the broiler that is why the Noiler cannot be ideal for commercial farming.
But if you have access to local cheap feeds like spent grain, broken rice etc,why not??

Why then is Noiler still important if it's not so attractive, you may ask.....It's because Nigeria is made up of over 200 million person and over 60% of these persons are resident in the rural area .
It therefore means that we have more persons in the rural areas than in the urban areas, and their feeding pattern is what is contributing to some of the unwanted health statistics that have placed Nigeria as the 2nd highest in terms of child and maternal mortality in the world.

Their protein consumption in meals is very low. So this is where Noiler comes in; rearing broilers is capital intensive and requires a lot of experience, so Amo now comes with Noiler that do not require so much in terms of cost and can still do much better when compared to the local or other improved birds like the cockrel.

With these Mama in the village can aford to buy 5 brooded Noiler birds at five weeks for 2500, leave them at the backyard, spend very little to bring them up to maturity .In two months, the male will be ready for her to sell each one for #2500 each...thus mama will make at least #12500 from her five birds (male only).

This will enable mama to boost her income significantly. Also if mama buys 10 birds for #5,000 and sells the males after two months of keeping them, she will keep the other five female to lay eggs for her, at full laying capacity, mama will be having one create of eggs every 6 to 7 days.....hence every week mama will generate additional income of #800

And the ones that are left to the create of 30, mama can eat them, thus she has been able to boost her own nutritional value.Once in a while she will slaughter a Noiler for her family, that has further added to her own nutritional value and that of her family......because she will definitely not like the idea of spending #2500 to buy a chicken and eat....she might consider that as waste.Noiler is for the rural areas to help the rural people with emphasis on women to improve their financial, social, health status....and as such empower the family and community at large

So the Noiler Program is a "give back" mechanism where government agencies, politicians, high net worth individuals, cooperate organisations can leverage on to improve the lives of rural people.
Local and international NGOs have adopted it currently

They are a hybrid of broiler and cockerels and they attain
maturity at 13 weeks with a weight of about 2.6kg for the males and 2.2kg for the
females. The females start laying at 5months, laying about 150-200 eggs in a
year. The females don't brood their eggs so if you want to hatch them you need
an incubator.

IDEAS TO MAKE INDIGENOUS CHICKENS GROW FASTER
Indigenous chicken does not have desirable genetic characteristics compared to commercial breeds. They take longer to mature, have poor food conversion ratio, do not lay a lot of eggs among others. However, there are areas where the indigenous chickens have certain strong points.
They generally have better resistance to diseases, produce nutritious and sweet tasting poultry products and the meat is often tender with more muscles than fat. However, the time and long-term cost for rearing indigenous chickens may not justify doing this on a commercial scale. Still, there ways to improve the system so as to make the most of your indigenous chickens ensuring they put on weight fast and offer better yields. Let’s look at some of the ways in which you can make your indigenous chickens grow faster and produce more:
How to make indigenous chickens grow fast
#1 Feed High Protein Food
While chicken needs a lot of carbs to meet their energy needs and make them put on weight, a high protein diet can help your indigenous chickens grow faster. Animal by-products are generally some of the best quality protein sources for your chickens. You can also supply them with some plant protein. However, if your chickens are not supposed to mature faster, don’t try to force it. Let them go through their natural cycle based on the chicken’s genetic potential. Early maturation for indigenous chickens can bring with it its own sets of complications such as prolapse and egg binding.
#2 Proper Feeding
Indigenous chickens are often left to their own devices to forage for their own food but small interventions in the feeding can make a huge difference. For example, instead of letting the chickens to fully forage on the pasture, you can supplement their diet with high quality formulated feed such as starter mash, growers mash, layers mash etc.
#3 Vaccinate
While indigenous chickens are hardy, you should still vaccinate them against deadly diseases such as the Newcastle disease to boost their chances of surviving an outbreak. Follow the proper vaccination schedule as recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture or your trusted local veterinarian.
#4 Proper Housing and Biosecurity
Reduce losses due to temperature extremes, overcrowding or predation by building a proper chicken house that will comfortably accommodate your flock. You should also observe the highest standards when it comes to hygiene and sanitation.
#5 Selective Breeding or Proper Breed Selection
Go for indigenous chickens with good characteristics such as early maturity, prolific layers and excellent resistance to disease. Bring outside cockerel often to prevent inbreeding. You can also do cockerel exchange programs to reduce inbreeding which has an impact on the productivity of your chickens.
#6 Provide enough water
Water is highly essential for the health and vitality of your chickens. Freshwater supply also has a positive impact on the feed intake. Make sure you provide enough drinkers in the poultry house to allow all chickens to drink comfortably without overcrowding or injuries

Supplementing the Diets for Your village Chickens

One way to cut down on the costs and also vary the diet and prevent boredom in your birds is by supplementing their diets with various other feeds, particularly the household leftovers.

Also when you are supplementing the diet of your poultry, it is important that you do in moderation. Don’t overfeed them on food leftovers all of a sudden. Do it little by little and also gradually. It is important to keep in mind that the majority of the intake for your improved breeds should come from their foods such as layers mash in order to maximize on their production.

These commercial feeds have been formulated in order to meet the all the dietary requirements of your chickens so that they can thrive well in your backyard and also lay more eggs or mature faster if you are rearing them for meat.

If you over supplement, you could not just compromise the health of your chickens but also decrease egg production. Do it but do it moderation. Feed in the morning and in the afternoon, let them scavenge in the chicken run up to about 6pm in the evening. Hang cabbages and other vegetable leftovers in the chicken runs in order to keep them busy when they are retiring in the evening or running away from the hot sunshine outside

CAUSES OF CANNIBALISM IN POULTRY

There are several reasons why cannibalism occurs in birds. These are:
 Overcrowding the birds such that they are restricted from exhibiting normal behaviour like dust bathing or limited access to perches or nesting boxes.

 Change in diet to a less preferred feed.

 Injured and bleeding birds that are left in the flock.

 Deficiencies in diet; calcium, sodium or protein.

 Keeping birds of different ages and colour together.

 External parasites like lice and mites that stimulate feather pecking.

 Bright light - photosensitisation programmes meant to stimulate early laying.

 Weak diseased birds tend to be pecked on

 Normal pecking behaviour among pen mates that develops to serious episodes.

 While laying large eggs, some birds may have prolapsed cloaca which attracts other birds to peck on
.
 Boredom can cause birds to start pecking on each other

How to Increase Egg Production of Your Poultry
If you are thinking of starting a livestock farm to raise chicken for eggs production, you have to keep in mind something. You need to have a clear knowledge about the production capabilities of your flocks. You must be aware of how to gauge the number of eggs that your flocks can produce and obviously the factors that are affecting the egg production rate. You have to identify the hens, which are laying and the hens, which are not laying eggs. When you have all knowledge be sure that you are prepared for starting a successful livestock business.
Egg Production Expectation
A hen lays only one egg in a day, and in some days it may not lay any egg at all. It totally depends on the hen’s reproductive system. A hen body start to form a new egg after it has laid the previous egg. It takes about 26 hours to form an egg fully, so mathematically a hen will lay its next egg two hours late each day, the reproductive system of a hen also sensitive to light exposure. So if a hen lays egg too late in a day it will skip the next day.
A flock of hens do not start laying on the same day. They also do not lay eggs for the same period of time. The time period that a hen will produce eggs varies from hen to hen. The egg level of egg production decreases each year and the size of the eggs increases. The number of eggs that a hen produces each year and the number of years that a hen produces eggs depends on some factors:
Management of pullets prior to lay
Breed
Light management
Space allowances
Nutrition
Factors that Affect Egg Production of Poultry
There are many factors that directly or in directly affects the egg production rate. To know these factors we need to do a research on the history of hens. The factors like aging, feed consumption, water, intensity and duration of light, diseases etc affects the production of eggs.
Aging hens: Aging is a big problem in egg production. A hen can live many years and it lays eggs continuously for these years. But after a sudden period of time like 2 or 3 years it’s egg production rate significantly reduces. It actually depends on the quality of hens that you are raising. Good layers lay eggs continuously for about 50 to 60 weeks then it takes a break. This time period is called molt. Poor and older layers more often molt and lay eggs less continuously.
Improper Nutrition: Chickens need a balanced diet with enough level of protein and calcium to continue the maximum egg production over a certain period of time. Improper nutrition can make the hens to stop laying eggs. Imbalanced level of protein, energy and calcium can drop the egg production. That’s why it is so important to supply a continuous balanced food to get a continuous supply of eggs.
Imbalanced food can cause many problems like oviductal prolapse. It mainly occurs when the birds are too fat or the egg size is too large. Prolapse can cause permanent damage to the hens.
Rejecting important food ingredients: Another important factor that makes you hens to lay eggs occasionally is the subtraction of important food ingredients.
Salt: Every animal needs salt. If you subtract salt from the food list it will reduce the egg production rate. Most of the animal’s food contains salt in the form of sodium chloride. It doesn’t contain any iodine.
Sodium is an important nutrient which plays an important role in maintaining the body fluid volume, proper osmotic relation and blood ph. Chlorine is also an important ingredient. HCl which release from stomach helps to digest food. Chlorine also maintains the osmotic balance in body fluid.
Calcium: The egg shell of hens is mainly composed of calcium carbonate. New hens need relatively a low amount of calcium at their growing period but when it start to lay eggs, it needs more calcium about four times relative to previous days. Inadequate calcium supply will lead to reduce egg production rate. Calcium can be supplied with the food. Limestone is a great source of calcium. You can mix it with the food you supply to your hens.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D is needed for the absorption of calcium. If improper vitamin D is supplied with the food ingredient it will result in decreased egg production. Feed contains vitamin D in two forms D3 and D2. In birds D3 is more active than D2. So you have to supply vitamin D only in the form of D3.
Protein: The requirement of protein is actually the requirement of amino acid which constitute the protein. There are about 22 types of amino acid in body protein and all of them are essential. Hens can’t produce all of them and also can’t produce enough to meet their requirement. So poultry farmers need to supply extra protein with the supplied food. The requirement of amino acid depends on the age, type and strain.
Management mistakes: Improper management system can also reduce egg production. Some mistakes that the farmers often does are:
Out of food is one of them. If you keep your hens out of food it will reduce its egg production. The reduction of egg production depends on the time without food. Make sure that your birds have enough supply of foods.
Water is also an essential element. Water represents about 70% of body weight. Inadequate water supply can also reduce egg production. Birds are more sensitive to water than food.
Daylight is also a great factor which controls the production of eggs. Hens need at least 14 hours of daylight. The intensity of light must be sufficient to increase egg production.
