We all remember Trump saying that there were just 15 cases that would soon go down to zero, and that everything was under control. A totally baseless claim, and he acted accordingly or should I say he didn’t act as required.

On Jan. 28, Trump retweeted a headline from One America News, an outlet with a history of spreading false conspiracy theories: “Johnson & Johnson to create coronavirus vaccine.” This was a lie. 

On Feb. 29, Trump said a vaccine would be available “very quickly” and “very rapidly” and praised his administration’s actions as “the most aggressive taken by any country.” None of these claims were true. Dr. Fauci said it would be 12-18 months before it could become available to the American people. 

Trump’s inaction meant that the United States fell behind South Korea, Singapore and China in fighting the virus. “We just twiddled our thumbs as the coronavirus waltzed in,” William Hanage, a Harvard epidemiologist, wrote. Hanage could have added that Trump's thumbs were busy on his phone tweeting out nonsense to the American people.

At a Feb. 10 political rally Trump said, “Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away.” Note: April is just a few days away. Do you think Trump's promised miracle will occur? We shall see.

On Feb. 5, Senator Chris Murphy tweeted: “Just left the Administration briefing on Coronavirus. Bottom line: they aren't taking this seriously enough. Notably, no request for ANY emergency funding, which is a big mistake. Local health systems need supplies, training, screening staff etc. And they need it now.”

Murphy also criticized the White House’s decision not to take coronavirus test kits offered by the World Health Organization in January, which he said was an especially devastating mistake because that test was ready to go and easily replicable.
