What do you expect, when the construction of the bases is contracted to Chinese firms who inturn contract it to bricklayers.

It's quite unfortunate.

These telecom towers are being constructed by indigenous contractors but the root of collapsed structures lie with the clients.

Reason: The contract sum for the construction of these masts/towers is very poor couple with the fact that contractors would make some profits and auditors taking kickbacks as well.

Our system is very poor and bastardised with corruption. From Site Acquisition to technical site survey to soil test to design to site build to auditing to handling over to maintenance....

Corruption, bad works done by contractors with kickbacks and so on. Corruption has ruined the country, ruined roads, health and hospitals, electricity, education, security, etc.

Most probably, poorly designed/constructed foundation, which was insufficient to resist overturning moments at the foundation base by lateral wind pressures or wrong specification (grade), size and/or embedment depth of installed anchor bolts' system. I suspect the latter cause as these high tower structures are mostly subjected to wind loads (during storm/rainfalls) which causes the anchor bolts to be in high tension (negative reactions). If adequate bolts(grade A307, A325 or B.S4395 grade 8.8 bolts) are not properly designed to take these forces and are consequently used during construction (with poor grouting), structural failure of this kind would not be a surprise.

I laugh in swahili.
All of you shouting globacom has bought market...globacom must develop the village.
Chaiiiiiiii.

You need to know how the telecoms industry works.

Those masts are no longer the responsibilities of the telcos.
They have asset/infrastructure managers.
In fact some masts are shared by 2 or more telecom operators.

The mast + base stations and the site power is handled by different managers.

And of course the managers are also wise.
They know there can be eventualities...so they insure their assets.

So therefore this wahala is shouldered by the INSURANCE and not the telecom operator nor the asset mgr.
