Expectant mothers have been urged to read to their unborn babies to intimate them with good reading habits from the womb.

The charge was given by the National Librarian/Chief Executive Officer, National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Lenrie Aina, during the 2018 Readership Promotion Campaign held simultaneously in Anambra, Edo State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Aina explained that reading by expectant mothers would help to provide auditory stimulation for the baby’s growing brain as well as enable them acclimate to the sound of their parent’s voices.

Citing the book by renowned writer and child psychologist, Sabah Karini titled, “How does reading during pregnancy increases baby’s intelligence?”, he said that the book makes them to know the benefits of reading to their unborn children.

She argued that reading by expectant mothers would not only improve the baby’s cognitive intelligence with a variety of stimuli, but also increase the baby’s intelligence.

Aina disclosed that the National Library of Nigeria would support the initiative by distributing books to expectant women in some selected hospitals during their ante-natal.

“The book also makes them to know that when unborn child is read to, at delivery, the baby may more likely respond to the people to whom he/she listened to during development.

“It is, therefore, pertinent that I encourage pregnant mothers to read to their unborn children and to cultivate the culture of reading in order to benefit maximally and progress as a nation”, she stated.

She expressed optimism that the decline in reading culture and challenges plaguing the nation would be surmounted by giving attention and priority to what to read.
